For all those asking about the intro song....The original song could come back! The intro clearly needs to be shorter though. I have spent some hours looking for an intro for the 5 seconds. I have narrowed it down to five and now need to polish each one, including a cut of the original. Then I will make a short video featuring all 5 with a voting section. Let the viewers decide. Ahh. I’ve just received my external filter from BacBrewing for my GF30. That means I no longer need the original hop-filter, and therefor I can whirlpool as David is showing in this video. I didn’t know the whirlpool wouldn’t work that well with false bottom. This was very enlightening! This mean, that - perhaps - the external filter was a good idea. 😎👍🏻 Thanks, David.
Great stuff David I need to buy one of those whirlpool tools as I still stir mine manually.However like you I clamp my filter on as it was coming off every brew and causing me big problems at the chilling stage.
I personally whirlpool 3 x times on a GF brewday, between 2-2.5 mins each time, 1= pre boil, 2 = post boil, 3 = Cooled wort in FV before pitching the yeast, seems to work well as i am regularly getting above the numbers in a given recipe, only by a point or two but its better than being below the numbers each time...nice video David, thanks for sharing...

Looking forward in using the whirlpool drill, bought it a while back together with the temperature flow thingy from grainfather. haven't had a whole lot of time to brew lately, but Easter and such should give me some time to have fun with it soon
Hmm odd. I wonder if it is down to different sizes of the GF and the False bottom itself? If I had this then I would probably add something like silicone to it to get the fit better. I should think that would be easy to obtain.
I also saw this lifting happen during my boil. I noticed that David uses an "eyelit" in the middle of the false bottom, mine didn't come with one. I am just wondering if this helps with giving the plate some "weight"? I was thinking too of using silicone but I guess this would be quite hard to source...but will try and source it, if I find anything I will let you know :)
I wonder if the difference in false bottoms is different gen models mine is of the gen2 and looks like gen3 is being used in video. Possibly they have upgraded the metal thickness / weight
Yes it seems most lack the eyelet. You could find something to weigh it down with. Perhaps fixed to the legs underneath, though some have told me the silicone ring works just fine. Clearly FB and GF sizes do vary a little. Some are finding it a very snug fit and some not snug at all. Mine seems in the middle of the two.
Could be, though I think there is small variations in the sizing of both the FB and GF models. Most likely different factories used for both over time.
Thank you David for the new video and the new format. I will miss the music but the format is nice 😀 A few days ago I used the false botton (adquired in Aliexpress) for the first time and the result was very positive. I taked care with the depth and speed of paddle during whirlpool. however, I think it would be better if it were subject more stable, perhaps with a rod or a silicone ring. I think the whirlpool is more effective and comfortable to do with the new false bottom and of course the pump works much better. Congratulations for the Video and I repeat my thanks 👍🏼

Interesting Vid David, struggling to find that false bottom in the UK, i shall keep seeking though as it looks like a useful addition to the system, with the hopeful negation of a bike pump in my brewing kit LOL! Although I have to say the bike pump works to clear a blocked filter if your not too vigorous!
Last weekend I experimented with using the grain basket as a hop spider but that didn't work at all. The boil was nowhere near as vigorous as usual, the bottom of the basket didn't stay put so the hops all got away and then they got stuck on the outside of the basket. I'm not doing that again.
Hi David. Is it an issue that the areation paddle has a gap on the rod where that flat paddle goes through it? Doesn't look clean to me and looks like it should be welded all the way up. Cheers for all the great info.
I bought the GF whirlpool paddle and a false bottom from a supplier in Norway. The false bottom is very light in weight and when I whirlpool it lifts up from the GF base and this disrupts the hops and they slip behind and end up on the base of the GF. I need to find something that weighs the false bottom down.
I am using the same equipment Ian, it is about the method as shown in the video :) I made this video so that people can try it out and learn how to whirlpool with confidence. It just takes some pointers and a little practise :)

Hi David! I'm planning on reducing the size of Brewzilla 65L false bottom for my Klarstein Brauheld Pro 35L. Do you still recommend whirlpooling with false bottom or do you think the boiling wort itself is enough to gain all the hop oils and other goods necessary? Is it necessary to whirlpool flame out hop additions? My main goal would be to use the pump with hop heavy brews without stucking and I hope that false bottom is the way to go. I'm going to splice 6x8mm silicone hose around the false bottom to get a snug fit after cutting the plate to a smaller size. The order is add last hops/end boil....whirlpool and let it stand 10-15 mins..chill. I whirlpool for 3-5 mins with a drill and paddle. Hope this answers you question but if not then let me know.
I have never had any success with whirlpooling. It whirlpool OK but I have never been sure why I have done it. On the very few occaisions that I have used pellet hops there was still hop mud all over the bottom of the GF. I have experience with vortex separation of solids from fluids. In my case the fluid was air and the vortex was formed around the shape of the vessel. Modern Vacuum Cleaners have the same principal. In the case of the GF Paddle, it rotates the fluid and forms a cone shape within it. Theoretically then as the rotation of the fluid slows the hop depis falls to the center of the induced cone. I have never felt like waiting the VERY long time for the rotation to stop and the debris fall to the bottom. After an hour one can still determine rotation. The problem is also that with modern vacuum packed dried hops they also have a high non-flower component (dust).
The Cone shape is characteristic of a vortex. It is a combination of circular momentum and gravity. Momentum is always conserved so the outer parts of the vortex rotate slower than the inner. The dust separating cyclone as on a modern vacuum cleaner has a physical cone, sometimes multiple cones of differing profile so the the particle size/mass range is greater. In our case the inner part of the vortex pulls the particles down to the centre where they eventuall lose velocity and gravity takes over. The outer part of the vortex is influenced by the enclosing body and simply rotating at a slower velocity attatched to the vessel wall and the particles drop out of suspension. I think the use of the term Whirlpool the Hops is an Urban Myth when all it is doing is mixing them into the wort. I saw a TH-cam video demonstrating the principle and large fluffy particles did indeed accumulate near the center of the vessel but Hop Pellets are fine compressed dust. I have whirlpooled and I have not whirlpooled and the difference in the result was minimal. The device is a good Aerator mind you.
I think it is important that people judge it for themselves. Times have changed and the use of the whirlpool is still common. I personally find that it aids in reducing fv trub and gives clarity a nice head start.

I'm going to order a Brew Monk (robobrew) soon to brew my very first beer with and saw it's also an option to add a whirlpool arm that connects to the pump. Would that also be sufficient and worth the extra 20 euro? Another question. The brew monk has a capacity to make 30L, so if I'd brew the maximum amount, how big of a fermenter do I need for the primary? I already have 3 glass 15L carboys and some 5L ones that I use for brewing mead and could potentially use for the secondary. Mead doesn't foam much, but don't know what to expect with beer. I'm loving your channel btw! It has been very informative.

But with the drill and paddle in a slightly higher rate it was very easy to flip the filter. So a tip for everyone: try it first with water so you can check at what speed it stays on the bottom. All you really need is a false bottom but having an external filter is not going to hurt at all :)

Yeah it works ok with small batches on the European version but little else. It works well on the US though apparently.

It could be if you do not clean it properly but its easily done.

Start the wp after flame out. 5 mins is enough if you are using a drill.

The size is not very important, as long as it fits 🍻
I know you use this method for aeration. In your experience is that enough to achieve the desire amount of oxygen in the wort?

No. Hot side aeration is not an issue for small batch brewing.

As usual, good video but it leaves me wondering. During the chilling process, how long and/or often do you suggest whirlpooling?

The brewmonk and robobrew are two different systems but are similar in ways. Ive not tried this attachment but think a drill will be more effective.

Hi David, nice video again, thanks! I acquired the filter a couple of days ago and did the test with water. But with the drill and paddle in a slightly higher rate it was very easy to flip the filter. So a tip for everyone: try it first with water so you can check at what speed it stays on the bottom. Awesome. Yes the water test is the way forward. Distance and drill speed are key. Drill power varies massively. Great to see you also showed a video :)
