    To be honest, I think the difference comes down to features vs refinement. The Boox has features of a full tablet, but looks rough around the edges. The Scribe can't do as much, but it's more comfortable to use, there's not the weird android glitches, and the text is crisper. I think Android Tablets in general have a little bit of a way to go before I would make the jump from my iPad for work and my kindle for reading and simple notes.

    The advantages of color are so numerous, it'll be hard for the grayscale screens to compete anymore. Even if Kaleido is slightly less white.

      I have one, and I can tell you that it's a lot less white. It's essentially unusable without the backlight on.

      Not for book and mangá readers. Is a very specific use case.

    That darker gray background is ... unfortunate. I'm more inclined to grayscale only (Boox Tab Ultra ... no C) until either the battery improves (so that the continuous front light doesn't obliterate the charge) or the color improves so that the background remains white.
    The Kindles are just too limited, even compared to other ereaders, in particular Kobo, though Kobo still needs to clean up the complexity of their writing interfaces.

    One thing Boox Tab Ultra C is so much better that it can run Android apps. It is so so much useful in some cases.
    And it is also support to sync with many cloud provider like Drive, Dropbox ...
    The last important point you can switch to black-white only mode to increase the response speed.

    I was unsure about some things: does the Onyx Boox Ultra C also have backlighting? Doesn't it tire your eyes? I'm interested in buying, but I was very unsure between the two, I know that some features of the Kindle Scribe are great, but I was wondering about the Onyx Boox Ultra C

    For me I got hyped and almost bought the non colour version simply because we can draw on our Kindle books! rediculous that you cant on the scribe. And then I saw colour?!?! SOLD! Now I can read comics without paying heaps for the Graphic Novels. I'm so excited to mine. And the splint screen when reading at the same time is awesome for study.
    I will say, the Kindles horrible web browsing interface is a plus. I've always liked my e-reader to have minimal distractions. Reading/Writting/Drawing and maybe some Audio books is more than enough for me. I dont want to use the thing for Video or social media ever. If It was perfect in every way, but had social media I would probably not buy one.
    (Love my Kindle Oasis)

      Update? How does the ultra tab look with WEBTOONS?

  • @scottbecker3485
    @scottbecker3485 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Thanks for this. As anticipated, the color layer really does „yellow out“/dim the type, and that makes it an absolute no-go for me, despite the device‘s huge, highly attractive feature set. For just reading books and taking notes, I‘m going with the Scribe. (And yes, I consider the Ultra without color, but that one is just too clunky to justify getting it without the added benefit of color.)

      @michaelhall3556 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Although the whites are gray on the Boox Tab Ultra C, the blacks are considerably blacker than on the Tab Ultra - and probably the Kindle Scribe, judging by this video.

    • @scottbecker3485
      @scottbecker3485 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@michaelhall3556 Good to know - thank you for commenting. Just received my Scribe today, and couldn‘t be happier with it so far. I‘m saying that as an owner of the Boox Nova Air 2 (black-and-white), too, so I do know about the great features offered by Boox. My flirt with the larger Boox ended, though, when I saw the screen comparison in this video. I have poor eyesight and need reading glasses, so treasure every bit of added contrast and clarity, and the Scribe offers that. I‘m reading a Kindle book on it now, and loving it much more than on my Nova Air 2 or even on my Kindle Voyage. The type is simply crisper, and the lighting better. The notetaking experiencing is also fine, at least for my modest requirements.

    • @youjib
      @youjib ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The tab c is sort of a mister average jack of all trades, I'll still buy it for internet, but for note taking i'll use something else on the side, from what i've seen the scribe is a pretty solid choice.

    • @scottbecker3485
      @scottbecker3485 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@youjib I agree on everything you wrote (thanks). And now I can say that from the standpoint of having received the Scribe a couple days ago. Brilliant for exactly what I wanted it for (mainly reading, with some notetaking). The display is crisp, well-lit (with great variability of the lighting) and the interface is fast enough. For browsing and tons of app distractions, I have my iPad Pro, but wanted to get away from UV screen rays for a more sleep-conducive evening/bedtime experience with reading and notetaking. The Scribe is perfect for that. The Tab Ultra C, as you say, tries to be everything to everybody, and succeeds quite well at that, but sometimes less is indeed more. ;-)

    Boox has come a long way on screens. My Nova Air 1 is a masterclass in how to not do E Ink displays. They used the same screen in the 2 model, but claim 50% more clarity just because they fixed their mistakes. I’d argue the Tab C has better clarity than the Kindle Scribe judging by this video - even with the addition of a colour layer.

    • @thisguy4505
      @thisguy4505 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Right. Like was said in the video, it's mainly a question of refinement. The android app is designed for smartphones, so it behaves in a less-than-ideal manner for e-ink. The Scribe is purpose-built, so there's no better way to consume Kindle books than on that device.

    • @slydog7131
      @slydog7131 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thisguy4505 There are Kindle books that require the Kindle app to read and can't be read on Kindle devices at all. The Kindle app is quite good, so there is no disadvantage to using the app instead of a Kindle reader. I use both and have no preference. Android first appeared on smartphones but then became common on tablets and even laptops. It has grown far beyond its smartphone beginnings. Android works fine on Eink. Kindle is based on Android. The Ultra C is far more powerful that the Scribe. The Scribe does have a great grayscale screen and great pen, and what it does it does well, but it doesn't do 10% of what the Ultra C can do. The Ultra C isn't perfect. It is an attempt to be an e-ink do-everything tablet or laptop replacement, and it's the e-ink device that comes closest to that. But, it's best to know just what you want from a device and get one that matches that. Many people are quite happy with the Scribe as are many who are delighted with the Ultra C. If you wanted a do-everything vehicle, you would buy a truck, but not everyone wants or needs a truck.

    In my country Australia, the price (as of 16 Jan 2024 ) for ONYX BOOX Note Air3 C 10.3" is $919AUD. The Kindle Scribe is $507AUD. If I need to work on a pdf document, I think it will be way more better to use the PC or the laptop to perform such function. The refresh rate on the ONYX looks a tag bit lagging and not as fast as an IPad. Each few seconds count for productivity. I think I would just stick with the Kindle Scribe for its reading experience on a large screen. I have the paperwhite version, and the screen is just too small - even though it fits in my small bag, but I never really enjoyed the reading experience due to the screen size having use the ipad pro a lot of time.

    Does anyone know if the Kindle Scribe uses the same screen technology as the 2015 300 ppi paperwhite? I still use that kindle as one of my readers, and I also have the Note Air 2 - however the boox for some reason causes me eye strain, whereas the paperwhite doesn’t cause any eye strain at all. If the scribe uses the same screen I will be selling my boox

    PDF's. It astounds me that neither Kindle nor Kobo manage the PDF reading experience very well.
    Websites. You don't buy an ereader to browse the web. The Boox Tab Ultras ... are tablets. The Kindle isn't. So ... The comparison is apples to oranges.
