  • Settle & Carlise Railway - Running between Carlisle and Leeds this station in Nth Yorkshire was an important railway spot where two railway lines spanned across into Cumbria and Yorkshire fighting for express connectivity to Scotland.
Three stations have served this historic market town. Settle Junction closed in 1877 when this grade 2 listed station originally called ‘Settle New’ designed by the Midland Railway company architect John Holloway Sanders opened at the same time as the line off to Carlisle on the 1 May 1876.

The railway cuts through the stunning limestone landscape and waterfalls with a hidden kiln once connected to the railway sat beside.
    Craven Lime Works: www.visitsettl...
The railway’s availability just south of the kiln site was built about 1849 by the Little North Western coming from Leeds or over to Ingleton - 25 years before the Settle to Carlisle railway was built.
At Langcliffe Scar the old Limestone Kiln played an important role in the railway. After visiting the railway station I'll discover the Kiln's location and beauty.

First got to learn about the Settle Carlisle in 1964 when the school I attended rented Ormside Station as a hostel for us kids to enjoy the stunning landscapes of the lakes.
Being a young train spotter it was a double bonus for me.
    Happy days

Great video, Gordon. New subscriber here. Further to the Hoffman kiln shown there is the remains of one in my home town of Ilkeston in Derbyshire. It was used by the Oakwell Brick Co for firing bricks. It is a listed building as far as I know, but the council are sadly not interested in making it safe or repairing it.

The foot bridge compliments the station it very elegant and looks period correct to my eyes glad it was not scrapped it would have been a crime.

Amazing video and incredible history of the lost railways in the North of England. Including that viaduct. And can’t forget the Midland Blue Pullman HST that went passed as well.

Fantastic that you caught The HST Midland Blue Pullman in the scene of the shot as well, some really fascinating railway items highlighted in this, like the bits of rail joint tracks showing grittness and the overlooks of the quarry section from the skyline:)

Too true. Originally they planned to only keep the line open as far as Horton-in-Ribblesdale quarry about 5 miles N of Settle!

If you find yourself on Settle station with a loaded touring bike as I once did and need to cross the tracks. Ask the staff and they will escort you across a ground level crossing; much easier than lugging your heavy rig over that bridge.
