What a marvellous piece of film making, easily of TV documentary standard. Garsdale is such a magic spot, truly the junction in the clouds. A set of programs like this would make wonderful viewing on Channel 5.

Beyond amazing. Just the best presenter of the best topic.
Stuns me when Portillo pretends to be interested in his old book and trains but actually spends 95% of each episode visiting places and no real focus on railways.
Rob Bell does a nice job, but Gordon you’re right on his shoulder, you should be on tv.
Thanks for what you do. 👍

@@samuraifool912 this is it, it’s so obvious it’s like a free and paid holiday touring U.K. and indeed across the world he’s been too, with nice hotels as you say......and little real interest in the railways themselves. He’s a charismatic enough guy, and a good sport doing some things that he clearly isn’t comfortable for (I dunno, skydiving, rugby, soccer, boxing, etc ) but the programme just seems to lack any real focus on the railways themselves as you say. Swathes of my dad's family I.e. his brother and sister both moved to Oz in the 50s and raised big families all down the east coast and a good friend and colleague of mine also moved 20 years ago. No one ever looks back. Except for to think of the great restoration work on old viaducts and bridges here as you say !!! Love it. A lot of focus on it these days thankfully. Government wants to infill underneath old overbridges where lines once went under. Thankfully again activists are stopping that.

I'm really enjoying this series Gordon, it's beautifully done. I've walked many a mile of old trackbed too so I feel you're a kindred spirit. Just a small point if I may. The reference to the county boundary having moved at Garsdale is a technical issue. When the new administrative areas were created in 1974, the old historic county boundaries were still intended to be relevant and didn't cease to exist. Only time and constant reference to places like Cumbria, Greater Manchester and Merseyside as "counties" by the media and others, have lulled people into believing they are true counties. Which they certainly aren't in the historic traditional sense. Cumbria is an administrative lump comprising the true counties of Cumberland, Westmorland and Lancashire (and part of Yorkdhire), so I never give it the respect it thinks it deserves. That aside, keep up the good work lad!

The viaduct at the beginning of this clip was going to be an embankment. However, after 2 years throwing material onto the site which just spread and refused to rise into said embankment they said something like "Sod it!" and built the viaduct instead. Another interesting fact is that the railway cottages nearby got all their water from a well under the viaduct right up to the 60's I believe.

Would you believe that the line went all the way to Northallerton. The section between Garsdale and Hawes was built by the Midland Railway and the rest by built by the NER. The station at Hawes is still there. Don't forget the line from Redmire to Northallerton is still there and is open as the Wensleydale Railway with services running between Redmire and Leeming Bar. MIght I add when they do reopen it'll be with PACER'S!!!! After the line closed to passengers. The line was kept open for freight to Redmire and if I'm right. The MOD took over the branch to run so they could take tanks by rail to and from the near by Catterick Garrison. Which leads to the unusual sight of tanks using the normal roads which have been strengthened for that reason. As passengers services went. The NER/LNER operated along the whole route but, the MR/LMS only ever operated a shuttle type service between Hawes and Garsdale. With the Governments ideas of reopening lines. This is one line that has been included in the list. The former turntable from Garsdale is now at Keighley on the KWVR

Great vlog. The reconnection to the Wensleydale line seems a no brainer to me.If governments and councils are serious about lowering emissions and cutting down on car use then connecting up this West, East link should be high on their list of priorities.I believe there is a locally run bus service, provided I think by volunteers, but I'm not sure if it runs all year.

Lovely country and a lovely relaxing video but you got the tunnel name wrong for it's not Moorcroft Tunnel but Mossdale Head Tunnel and it's 245 yards long and the last train ran through it on the 16th march 1959. Although as you rightly pointed out it is indeed used to store farm machinery but it hasn't been maintained since March 1959 and ground movement is now destroying it. If the Wensleydale Railway find the cost of repairs to the tunnel too prohibitive in their future extension to Garsdale then it maybe cheaper to open the tunnel out into a cutting as the crown of the tunnel is slowly being forced up due to ground pressures and there's very little ground above the tunnel. It makes me think it may have been built at the insistence of a landowner as often tunnels like Mossdale Head had to be built because a landowner didn't want the trains spoiling his view.

Sad to say that the Wensleydale Upper Restoration of the line from Garsdale to Hawes and possibly onto Askrigg has been blocked by the Yorkshire Dales National Park support for turning the trackbed into a Bridle Path.
So again no benefit for tourists, locals and giving an option to get cars off the roads.
Considering that regular direct trains from south of Manchester to Ribblehead are now running, it really does seem a waste
