10:25 "Soft gamines always feel like they are too wide, too short" this definitely feels accurate... i'm 1,63 and even when my weight is considered "normal" I sometimes feel like this. Especially next to taller people, classics, naturals... I like my body (most days) but sometimes it's hard. Ps: I'd love to see more mid to plus size people in these videos! Showing the ankles makes such a difference indeed! It really can save the silhouette for SG! It seems counter intuitive but we look leaner and more elegant that way.
As a soft gamine I wear boyfriend jeans and they always look amazing on me. On the tall slim models they look boyish but on a short and round shape they look exactly right. Even the length is perfect on me. Try this hack if you never tried wearing the boyfriend jeans 👍
@@Carrie-sgda Hi, any brand name of your boyfriend jeans? Me too, skinny is not for me...:) My button looks to much, plus my belly is not flatter by it...
I've been typing myself as a Theatrical Romantic for a long long time. I think this video just convinced me that I'm a Soft Gamine. I literally follow all these rules (sometimes without even consciously thinking about)! It all makes sense now!
The Olsen twins can pull off long, loose lines because of their essence. They have an ethereal essence. Baggy clothes make them look like characters out of a story book. The same goes for Stevie Nicks, who is also a SG. She has an ethereal, mystical essence about her, which is why she's able to rock those long, bohemian dresses. However, Reese Witherspoon, an SG, would not be able to pull that off. She has a classic essence.
This!!!! Essences are so important; I didn't understand why I hated on me so many recommendations for gamines and soft gamines until I found out I have a mixture of ethereal essence.
I love a small sized mens shirt with a v-neck! It gives juuust the right amount of angularity in the shoulders and drape. I usually stuff it in pants or skirt
Aly, your soft gamine videos are the reason why I actually like to dress myself nowadays. Your videos are straightforward, helpfully visual and incredibly thorough. thank you for all of the work that you do, I cannot overstate how you have helped my confidence!
Please show soft gamine in athletic and outdoor winter clothes, include sports wear. Examples of jackets for x country skiing and hiking would be great! This was a very helpful video!
Wow this is SO validating thank you!! Explaining exactly why I’ve always felt the need to tuck my shirts in, not wear baggy or oversized clothing - it just makes me feel like a little kid or little boy pretending to be an adult 😂 super helpful to put words and analysis behind what I’ve always kind of felt intuitively
Great tips and guidelines! Love the options & also the things to avoid. Seasonal tips for each body type is a huge undertaking, but it’s much appreciated!

Thank you Aly! I find that watching all your videos, even those not in my body type (SN) are very informational. I have watched so many videos on the kibbe body types. After seeing this one, I think I am a SG. However, some of the clothing mentioned I would never feel-good in. I am rarely ever drawn to prints and absolutely do not like poca dots of any size. I feel like large prints are wearing me instead of me wearing the clothes. The silhouettes you mentioned I tend to wear; except I feel best in a V necklines to minimize my bust. Great video!
@@Bongi344That would be my guess to. According to her new style and things Aly says, that She's small, not a romantic type. What else? I think she could be a pure gamine or a Fg 😊But only Aly herself can answear that question 😅😅
About the Olson twins- back in their childhood years, they wore the most adorable, quintessentially soft gamine outfits. Yes, grunge and stoner styles were big in the 90s, but there were a lot of colourful, mod-retrospect outfits that were popular too. (Ie. Clueless, the London preppy look.)

I find it to be the other way around for me. I look better with a high neck if the dress is short but a low neck if it's long. We dont all have boxy shoulders and feel wide/swollen/big or chubby/chunky. There is also a grey area dependant on essences . I wear oversized clothes ,not quite as oversized as the olsens but because its light material and my wrist are on show and my shoes are small its a good look on me. I also wear straight leg jeans because they dont look straight on my curves and wide leg is awful on me unless very long and slouched at the ankle. This makes the wide leg look more narrow and brings a softness that i need. A slim leg is nice a d i love a flare which strangely hasnt been mentioned ? I cant stand skinny jeans most of the time because they dont extend on my shape. I used to only wear skinnies and with in the last three years ive turned away from them because as great as i look in them they dont really add anything and there not the best fit for my style roots.
I’ve been thinking I was a soft natural or maybeee soft gamine but this video I realized I must be soft gamine. All my best outfits follow these rules, and literally the style issues you describe fit me exactly 😅 I feel like gamines look in pictures so much smaller than I feel I am, but I realized while I’m “wider” bones I’m very compact and when I follow things like “tapering” at the wrists or ankles it really helps bring out the best in my shape. Wow wow wow 🤩 (To be fair I feel I’ve figured out my ID like 12x already but this time around after taking lots of photos for data and comparing them I think I’m much closer to a definite)
8:43 i know that feeling very well too. I have a wide trousers with pleats in the front, i cut them 2 times already, but still didn't wear them. Every time im trying them on, i just don't like something and go for other pants. Anyone have similar experience? What did you do? Maybe i should cut them 3rd tome to show ankle. Just afraid to cut to much and then regret it and ruin pants for good. Also trousers are very wide and normal waist line below bellybutton (bought them many years ago).
Took me so many years to realize im a soft gamine. Kind of funny because the tips in the video are mostly things i already do, and the rest is just advice with very high face value

I was so disappointed, and i dived intro the videos and old photos of me and i realized that my best looks are wearing soft gamine lines 🎉 now i feel like i understsnd so many confusing things about My body ❤
For some reason i was questioning my type, cause chunky shoes don't look good on me, something is always off Now that you said it is the case with soft gamines, i can dress peacefully
I have been typed as a SG. Also, seems like my torso is short, but that may be because I am bigger busted. The recommendation for a SG is a higher neckline, which I have always steered clear from. It is supposed to give a lifted effect to the body. I have a couple, but I have always worn V-necks to minimize. I noticed Ally's video is showing people wearing somewhat lower necklines than I was recommended. I thought she herself said once in a video she was a SG and she does not have on a high neckline on in this video. Though for her it would really suit her as she is not as big busted. This may be a recommendation I am going to have to compromise on especially with warm weather coming up.
You don't have to wear cute styles, u can do any genre of clothes but just need to keep it fitted and cropped basically. If u mean u don't like how cropped stuff looks on u then that's different, and maybe you're not SG
Maybe it's just not your essence . Look up Kitchener's essences . You could be SG , but your vibe gives off maybe natural or romantic or a blend for example .
I'm soft gamine and I didn't like the styles that Aly showed because I dress in edgy whimsy goth style. But the silhouettes that she showed suit me very well - crop, narrow, waist emphasis, high necklines, contrast. I just alter the style of the clothing to suit my esthetic.
Same! I think it’s way I’ve tried to convince myself that I’m soft classic instead lol but there’s definitely a way to find the things that work. I love French 60s lines/style because it suits a lot of the SG rules
I also recommend paperbag waists for pants and shorts to my fellow sgs! the waist emphasis is very flattering while giving us a looser, less constricting fit which is nice during the summer. and thank you Aly for these videos! you help me feel more comfortable in my outfits and buy clothes I actually enjoy wearing :) I still miss the 2010s twee fashion and hope it comes back in style at some point. that trend was MADE for sgs 😄
Just wear it even if it is not "trendy"! I even feel that with TikTok "aesthetics" almost everything is trendy now. Tweed for example is a staple in the Dark Academia aesthetic and the Old Money aesthetic
@@kthy31 you're so right, we should wear what makes us happy. life is too short :) time to bring back Peter Pan collars, statement tights and polka dots 😇
@@Madamchief it's a style of loose, high waisted pants that are cinched at the waist (usually with a cloth belt) and sometimes at the ankle. probably easier to google "paperbag waist pants" and look at the images tbh. it's a bit difficult to describe 🙈
I think I might be a soft natural, soft classic, or soft gamine, but I think I look muscular because of my arms and shoulders, so I'm not even sure I'm soft.... I feel like soft gamine fits what works on my figure, but I'm 5'5'', so I'm not really sure that I can fall into the gamine category. My shoulders and frame are small... I'm pretty curvy and soft, except my blunt muscular arms/shoulders that feel masculine but boyish. Based on my measurements I'm a bottom hourglass, so pretty balanced but just slightly heavier on the bottom. I'm so confused! I'd love help :)
I'm still in confusion whether I'm a tr or a sg. Ig I'll go with both. I'm from india, a summer dominant country. So these videos are savior for me. Thanks a lot ❤💕
If you look too chubby in delicate, flowy fabrics or you need some bold lines in your makeup (also if you don't look exaggerated wearing bold lips/bold eyes combo), then you're probably a SG. Also check your neckline, I'm busty, so I supposedly shouldn't wear high necklines, but they suit me very well, romantic types look chubby in high necklines.
Does your head look slightly big in proportion to your body? -> SG Do you look "out of place" or like you are wearing your mom's dress when you are wearing a classic bombshell old Hollywood type of dress? -> SG
@@Dan_Chiron I can't pull off bold makeup, they tend to overwhelm me(i have delicate facial features). Also, I've not worn high necklines recently so can't tell, but i do look awesome in halter neckline ☺ I'll definitely consider your words when I'll wear high necks! Thanks for your comment though ❤
@@kthy31 yes😂 i do seem to have a big head compared to small face and small body. Since I'm indian, I do not associate with old hollywood glamour. But BUT if I happen to wear such outfits, they'll overwhelm me for sure! Now I'm almost certain that I'm a soft gamine. Thanks for your help ☺❤
Since I left my last comment, I have been typed as a SG, which I did think it could be me. I am not overweight but have a large bust and wide rib cage. If I buy tops, I have to buy them in large and they always slope past the shoulders and are long. I can hem the bottoms, but I know SG are supposed to have crisp shoulders. It is so difficult finding petites. Also, I was told that higher necklines for SG look the best. I see the reasoning, but I have always gone with V Necklines to minimize the bust. Frustrating! And yes, even at a normal weight or at times when I have been underweight, I have felt heavy.
Hey Aly. This is such a useful video. Thank you! 🙏 I think I'm a (fellow) soft gamine, but wanted to raise two issues I've come across: a) I'm 5ft 5.5in! So I'm over the supposed limit by half an inch! Is it still possible I'm SG? Soft gamine clothes look 1000% better on me, and I have all the other features, it's just the slight height discrepancy that makes me wonder sometimes. b) I am a true autumn. This is sometimes hard to reconcile with all the suggestions for bright or contrasting clothes that SGs get. Would tonal contrasting/colour blocking count? eg darker brown bottoms with a rich, medium brown top, for example? Would love to get your insight! Thanks again for all your invaluable tips! I can see you work really hard at this.
Great LOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just wear it even if it is not "trendy"! I even feel that with TikTok "aesthetics" almost everything is trendy now. Tweed for example is a staple in the Dark Academia aesthetic and the Old Money aesthetic
Wear a paper bag??
Flamboyant gamine? More angular, more muscle.
Can you do a video on night wear for body types.
-> SG
Do you look "out of place" or like you are wearing your mom's dress when you are wearing a classic bombshell old Hollywood type of dress?
Same but my head appears smaller
Hi, how about bodycon? ❤️
Great LOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you have any suggestions for soft gamines who like "cutesy" styles but dont want to look like a toddler? Asking for a friend. 😅
I'm 5'5", but I do have a body type a bit similar to octavia spencer. But... I have some more smaller bones and more waist. TR maybe? Help!
High colar just won't work for my big breasts, I think for most of soft gamines actually considering we have more curves than gamine 😢
