  • "In this video I will show you how to make a Freediving neck weight! This is an easy DIY that requires minimal materials and equipment.
If you are a new Freediver who is interested in dynamic disciplines, you will 100% need a neck weight if you want to have better control over your buoyancy!
Neck weights can also be used in depth diving, to aid the diver in their descent. Neck weights can even be used for Spearfishing! Neck weights are available commercially, BUT they can be expensive. This is why most Freedivers will make their own.
Making your own means you can set the exact length and weight that you need! Enjoy!
    Materials needed:
Inner tube (To match your weight requirements)
Lead Shot (To YOUR required weight)
    Scales
    Quick release buckle
Cable ties Heat shrink / electrical tape / inner tube cut offs
    Blow torch / heat source
    Rod - for packing lead

Nice one! Cheers for this. My instructor had a homemade one as was keen to make my own. Super helpful.

Cheers Ben! Glad this has helped! Definitely worth doing, especially if you don't want to shell out £40+!

If you ever make another one I'd put another inner tube around the first one. At some point you'll likely have a (small) tear, resulting in the lead shot pooring out. The pool owner won't like that very much. :) The shrink tube is a lot better thanthe electrical tape that's often used though!

Very good point! So far I've not had any leakage issues, but it's inevitable really isn't it! I'll try an extra inner tube though when I have to make another! Another thing I've seen people use are fabric sleeves that go over the tubes. My next one I might even try using a silicone tube rather than an inner tube. I avoid electrical tape since I started using shrink wrap! Much cleaner!
