I only attended one gig at the Rock Garden and i still have nightmares because of it . I went to see the Damned there in around 1979/80 I spent the whole night avoiding the numerous punch-ups and the torrent of spitting ! I was never more relieved to get out of a venue in my life.
At last someone who thinks the same of Queen as I do. I also share the same JCC LP as you and TWAT is my fave. I am now straight onto the Rustbucket LP, on here then check out a vinyl copy. Only ever listened to Rust Never Sleeps, but that opener....
@VinylMonkey58 I'm torn between 4LP at £45 or the same plus dvd and other stuff for £55. Had a few last night and played the arse of the available stuff on TH-cam. Thanks man, I never really got past Rust Never Sleeps with Neil cos I thought it was all a bit the same, but that live footage of Country Home has convinced me that he does what he does for good reason. That said I still can't stand CSN&Y.
Great video - thank you. A particularly disappointing gig that comes to mind was the Cranberries at the Albert Hall in 1992. They walked on stage, hardly acknowledged to crowd, played about 10 songs and then left. Either they really didn't want to be there, or they had just had a big row, or something... who knows, but it wasn't good. Also I saw Madness quite briefly at the Bracknell Sports Centre in 1979 before Skinheads turned up and got nasty. Cheers - D
Cheers David-I only seen Madness once-at the otherwise great Hartlepool Dock Rock Festival in 86. I could never get away with them. Shame about the Cranberries-always quite liked them
Great video. It really made me think of the awful gigs I've been to. But, I'd say you are in a different league to me. I've never been beaten up at one or had one interrupted by mice. I have however, walked out of a Queen gig. So that's something we have in common. People say it must have been fabulous to see Queen with Freddy. I was feeling that it was all very mediocre and when the crowd started doing the actions to Radio Ga Ga, I was gone down the pub. 😂 I don't have the bad nature to tell the truth and I just say they were great. Keep up the good work.
Loving the T shirt. Massive fan of Bowie seen him quite a few times but couldn't go to see him in the "Let's Dance" era, I think he referred to it himself as his Phil Collins period. Great channel, waves of nostalgia from the vids I have watched up to yet in the words of Noddy Holder "Keep on Rockin'"...
Great video and an Interesting theme which will ring bells with many music fans. Without actually being beaten up I can relate to your story about the Penetration gig. I remember being at an Angelic Upstarts show at the Customs House Newcastle in about 1978. Absolute mayhem, skinheads throwing chairs, students being kicked to bits, eventually shut down by the police with dogs. By the way, I agree, Newcastle Arena is a horrible venue.
Hi Mally.. Hull City Hall 1977 saw Procul Harem. which was best remembered for the aggression and genuine hatred that night.. ON STAGE. Brooker in particular was particularly aggressive with the rest of the band and as i remember the roadies rushed on stage to seperate scuffels on atleast two occasions. Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall backstage after the show. The music was secondary that night but the entry fee of around a fiver that night was well worth it for the antics on stage.. Dont let it go to your head Mally but for me your videos are rapidly becoming the best watch on the VC... Take care Mally..
Great stories Mal. I just can’t take stadium or hockey rink shows. Any gig where they have those screens are horrendous. In ‘73 I had Sabbath tickets and they cancelled after trouble at the US border. That sucked. Cheers.
Not the worst gig I attended but I used to squat with Animal Liberation Front members who were fond of the group Crass. They talked me into going to a gig and i assumed it would be a bunch of middle class kids tripping off their nuts. It was but also attracted the attention of a group of National Front boneheads who decided to attack the venue when most folks were peaking on some very industrial acid which we were all spiked with. They were showing anti vivisection films with gruesome imagery which were hard to ignore . The doors were looked to stop any Nazis entering but kept the crusties from leaving. It was everything I despise about gigs , quite glorious in some ways but an awful experience none the less. Then you had to find your way home afterwards. People spoil everything don't they?
Cheers David. I've had the lad who organised the gig on to me since the video-explaining the events of the whole day. As ever, there was more too it-apparantly the first PA provided was good but Casal was being 'Arsy', so the PA provider reloaded it into his van and left-leaving them in the lurch
acdc hammersmith back in black tour just about managed a hour and a bit saw them again years later and they were great so who know s what went on that night in 1980
Excellent video on a topic most of us have experienced. I agree with your comments on Queen and large venues. My worst gig was Marvin Gaye at the New Victoria in London during his drugs period. A pick up band, poor sound and a lack-lustre performance from him made it a real disappointment
Malcolm, I was involved with the Casal gig,and in fact helped getting the bog standard PA he ended up using, but only because he had turned up pissed up on the afternoon, demanding bottles of whiskey before he agreed to play, and insulting the guy whose proper PA we had hired, who ended up he telling him to F off and took his PA away with him.I managed to get the crap PA last minute from my band mate Phil Dunn who had one we used for rehearsals…to be fair he was a complete twat
Brendan-thanks for the correction/clarification. I wasn't having a go at anyone-respect to everyone who works to put live music on-I was telling it as I understood it (from talking to Casal) and as I remember it (badly as usual). I did enjoy the gig though
@@VinylMonkey58 no problem, poor Kev Sewell lost out big time financially on it,even running to the offy on Oxford Road to supply his whisky. He saw the admittedly crap venue and didn’t fancy it
I saw Oasis at Wembley Stadium and they were awful. However, Black Grape who were supporting them were brilliant. Oasis were so flat, we left the gig while they were still playing. Totally agree about football stadiums being terrible music venues but U2 (Zoorupa tour) Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band (Born in the USA tour) were exceptions to the rule.
Worst gigs ive seen were U2 at Wembley Stadium and Metallica at Newcastle Arena and that was the venues fault. Both bands were amazing but the venues were just too big i could barely see U2 and the sound wasn't great outside. Metallica were great but i didn't like the arena we were too far back. The atmosphere wasn't good.
Saw Alabama 3 a couple of times. Great live band. Big Fan of JCC and have seen him many times. His autobiography is a great read. I've never got Queen though. They turned glam-rock into pure theatre and spectacle. The sort of stuff that belonged in the West End. Neil Young fans can be a pain in the ass. They've elevated him to a god-like status that's not quite merited. It's the same thing with Pink Floyd and Steely Dan. It's rock Scientology. The concerts are where followers go to worship and be anointed. Cheers Mal.
The audience is generally what ruins a show for me. I try not to let it bother me but sometimes it’s just too much. The worst recent one was seeing Peter Gabriel last year in NYC. People behind me wouldn’t shut up for half the show.
Cheers-I agree-very annoying-I've been close to getting into fights on numerous occasions for asking/telling people to shut up. One particularly easy altercation was at a Christy `Moore gig, again in London, at the Festival Hall
Many people don't know how to behave at gigs anymore and are there to show-off. It's all about them being there and they are the performance. It's an interesting cultural phenomenon. The artist/band on stage is no longer the main event. I very rarely go to live gigs now for that reason.

Cheers John -good to hear from you-keep up with the therapy:)
Saw Bowie on the SM tour at the NEC. Great gig and he played stuff off Lodger, which I don't think he'd done before. We had good seats as well.
Nice one Richard-I do like that album

Lords Of The New Church, Milan 1984. Walked out after 3 songs. They were shite.
I have talked about bad gigs before but I don’t think I’ve done s video dedicated to the subject.
Cheers Richie - I guess you've some great experiences to share
Superb narrative, enjoyed every word.
Cheers person-thanks for taking the time too watch and comment

Cheers Dermot (and Tara)- not having "the bad nature" is entirely a good thing in my book

Aw it's too late now William-already gone to my head :) Bloody hell - Procol Sarum-don't expect that from them!
Great stories Mal. I just can’t take stadium or hockey rink shows. Any gig where they have those screens are horrendous. In ‘73 I had Sabbath tickets and they cancelled after trouble at the US border. That sucked. Cheers.
I bet it did Jack. I never seen Sabbath either. Thanks as ever for watching and commenting

Thanks for sharing that MadamCyn-yes, as the great man said-Hell is other people
Loved that Neal Casal story. He must have been as gutted as you. 😢 And that Alabama 3 one. Oh dear. 😂
Cheers David. I've had the lad who organised the gig on to me since the video-explaining the events of the whole day. As ever, there was more too it-apparantly the first PA provided was good but Casal was being 'Arsy', so the PA provider reloaded it into his van and left-leaving them in the lurch

Cheers Mick -thanks for watching and sharing that-never seen AC/DC-though I did see Brian Johnson with Geordie in my local workies club
I saw Neil Young at the O2 Arena 10 years ago or so and was alarmed to see people ordering pizzas etc during the gig. Very distracting!
Bad gigs can become good stories, apparently. Enjoyed the video! Cheers 🍻
Haha -cheers Terje

Cheers David-what a shame re Marvin Gaye-such a great artist
Shame to hear the Ray Charles/Morrison gig was a disappointment. Such an interesting video. thanks.
Thanks 'retro' for taking the time to watch and comment

You very nearly got beat up at that Per Ubu concert, last year, until I realised it had been my suggestion to go.
Cheers stagger lee-I can imagine those two working in stadiums
Worst gigs ive seen were U2 at Wembley Stadium and Metallica at Newcastle Arena and that was the venues fault. Both bands were amazing but the venues were just too big i could barely see U2 and the sound wasn't great outside. Metallica were great but i didn't like the arena we were too far back. Cheers Gary - more power to small venues
