    Thanks for doing such a great job on this interview with Franz. I didn't realize how passionate he is with Tesla's overall mission from the his start with Tesla. Also really like that Franz still delivers cars personally to customers. His humility and desire to keep learning to improve his craft showed through.

    Just met a guy from Ukraine who drives a 2015 Model S. Just had a great conversation between Tesla owners. Nothing else mattered. Not where I am from. Not where he is from. Not that I live in a peaceful country and he escaped war. The instant connection Tesla creates is magic.

    I tried to listen to this while I did housework due to its length. I was so blown away that I found myself returning to my screen just so that could add the body/facial responses to the dialogue.

    The Tesla team is incredible. Their software is the best hands down. Their charging network is the best. Their vehicles are joy to drive. Never have a seen a automaker constantly improve a vehicle after they sold it to a customer for free until Tesla did it forcing others to follow. The best engineering available on market today everyone else is 10 years behind

    Loved this interview. Here in Vancouver BC Canada 🇨🇦 where we have very high gas prices and very low electrical costs, Tesla’s are everywhere here too. As well there are a ton of super chargers and non Tesla chargers, its crazy. My wife has model 3 and it has been great and exceeded our expectations.

      I am out in Surrey. Both our Superchargers are in Guildford as far as I am aware. Would like to see more around Surrey and Langley. The price difference between gas and electricity here does make Tesla's quite compelling though.

    I had no idea going in to this interview I would become an admirer to Franz, but I have to say, he is the most enjoyable person I’ve seen in interview to date.     I remember the first video/images I saw of the Whitestar and it was exciting. When I placed a reservation in 2012 and took delivery in early 2013, I was so proud to own that vehicle. It is, by far, the best purchase I have ever made.

I worked on Sand Hill Road in the late 2000s & early 2010s and saw Roadsters on my way to/from work, but wasn't able to afford a Tesla until Gen2 (my Model S). Hope you guys can re-book Franz for a follow-up chat! Thanks!!

    I live in Missouri, I saw 13 Teslas in 15 minutes driving home. By 2030 it will be interesting seeing 13 cars that are not Teslas in a 15 minute drive.

      I live in Marin County, CA. Today I counted 29 Teslas in my brief 2 mi drive from the freeway to my house. In California the OEM car dealers are so under trafficked and understocked that I thought they were closed. Indeed, many are closing down but Tesla service centers are proliferating.

    Don’t forget - a “truck driver” does more than just push pedals and turn a wheel. So many don’t understand a driver/operator is still a mobile warehouse manager and all the physical and intellectual attributes such a position requires.
    Though drivers will use autonomous driving to transport, they will still be needed. For some time … until Optimus offers alternative options 😅

    As a train driver I think it is interesting that people can talk about the design of the semi without saying the obvious. It looks very much like a train from both the outside but also from the inside with the center seat, double screens etc.

    The fundamental design theme of Porsche has not really changed in decades (aka the 911). So why do people think the model S needs a major style change?

      Fundamental design in that the engine is at the back, but that's about it. There have been roughly eight completely new 911s, (new = entirely new sheetmetal, chassis, and engine upgrades) since the first 911 was introduced. Since the second generation 911, these new models have come out about every 5 years, which is in line with how all other major car manufacturers update there product lines. That's the basis of this question; yes, we know Tesla is a disruptor and thinks different, but the original Model S is now over 10 years. Will they do a full model changeover? If so, when? And I count myself as a fan of the flagship design; it still looks very fresh. And yes, sales are good now, but wouldn't we think they'd be even better with a new one? What if it had Cybertruck [or beyond] styling - look at the excitement CT generated... etc. etc. Thanks for watching.

    The guts Franz had to up and leave a cushy job in big name companies to join obscure ones over and over again in order to stay true to his own values, quality, sustainability. It reminded me of Joseph Campbell and his admonition to youg folks “follow your bliss”. He is a trend blitzer, his designs, so surprising to begin with, are now copied by everyone else: the large screen in the middle of the console, everyone does it that way now, the uncluttered interior, the grill-less front. I am jealous of such clarity of purpose in steering one’s life.

    1:28:00 I currently own a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado LT and when I tow my boat my range is cut at least 50% and if there are hills/mountains it’s even more. In the winter range is reduced when I let my truck warm up and use the 4wd. Many of the old school truck users are luddites and don’t want change. I am looking forward to the CT and will most likely order one after I get a chance to drive it.

      Imagine if the CT had 3 motors for "beast mode" but 2 of them disengaged for "cruising" (even when towing)?

      @@rogerstarkey5390 I could see it being used like that. I’m sure the CT will have different drive modes similar to the cars. I have been waiting for the CT for awhile and hope it’s as good as all the hype. By the time the CT is in full production I will be ready for a new vehicle and I want it to be a CT.

    What a great interview! Just one thought - Ed brought up that a lot of EVs have more power than really needed and that its not good for sustainability issues. But then he talks about the design getting long in the tooth. I think for sustainability's sake you want to keep a design as long as possible. Why change it as long as its functional. The most common reason for car companies to change the design is that they want to sell more cars and get people out of their old cars. That is so wasteful. Also - much better for resale values if you keep the design mostly unchanged. Mercedes used to be that way and now they and all others in the legacy car industry treat their design sort of like fast fashion. totally wasteful. I commend Tesla for hanging on to the designs. Like them or not - they still look fresh - that's a huge achievement by Franz!

I probably say this in my head about once a week (or every time I see a Model S on the road): "Man what a great and timeless design. Especially from the rear 3/4 angle. Wide stamps. Sport, yet sophisticated. One of the best in history." BUT ALSO, I know how consumers shop and surely Tesla is losing out on some existing customers (who chase the new) or getting new customers who don't want what everyone else has (or something perceived as old). That's all I was saying. Franz (and Elon) are smart - surely they've done the analysis on what kind of sales an all-new Model S would bring. I mean, aren't you interested in what that could be? Thanks again.

    A wonderful interview with Franz von Holzhausen! I wonder if he ever worked with my brother, who was also working at Ford from 1983 - 2017. His name is Ed Golden, and he reported directly to Jay Mays until Jay Mays retired.

    You guys did a really great job interviewing. I didn't know anything abut his past work - all beautiful cars. I really love his passion for design and the mission. I've been driving a Tesla for 7 years and I can't imagine having another car as my daily driver. Even though I think the Model S is beautiful, and timeless... there are too many on the road now. I do hope Franz can some up with something significantly different but equally beautiful.
    And if Franz is listening... here's my wish list:
    1. Plaid model 3. More power than the performance, and serious track day suspension and brakes.
    2. Affordable 2+2 roadster. I don't need, and can't afford a $250,000 super car, but I would love a good looking convertible with model 3 performance. My M4 feels so slow compared to any Tesla.
    3. A leather steering wheel. I can live with fake seats, but I want to touch real leather when I drive.

    No cars have ever amazed me the way Tesla's do. Was never a car enthusiast until researching model 3 & Y. Never would have plunked down 53k on a car, but I got the Y and am still amazed by it after a year. Still learning all of the features and hidden tricks. I'll never not own a Tesla.

    Pontiac and Saturn were the only GM product lines I was interested in. The Solstice and Sky were a couple of the most outstanding models.
    GM killed it all.

      @@EdwardLoh why do you think Tesla needs to add a new shaped taillight or sculpt a fender to set the present model from other years. That's very OEM thinking IMO. I just traded my 2017 model S for a Y Performance. As I was driving home from picking it up I saw 8 new model Y's in 20 miles not counting the numerous Y's and model 3's. The Model Y was the 5th best selling car in the world (just behind the Ford F-150) so I believe there are a lot of people like me who don't care that someone has the same car. Just my thoughts. I enjoyed the podcast immensely

      @@hornprof46 Yours is a good question. Post WWII when the auto industry really took off, fueled by the baby boom, car makers, mostly American at the time, were changing bodystyles, full sheet metal changeovers, every year. It was nuts! But it drove sales - "See the new Chevys for '57!" We're obviously not doing that anymore - for a lot of reasons (mostly cost - tooling is very expensive). And yes, Tesla has shown/is showing, perhaps, how long you can go without a full/traditional exterior styling upgrade. But as an industry watcher, I wonder what they might be "leaving on the table" - the casual (non hardcore) Tesla owner might be bored and want something new (that's natural, it's why we buy new shoes, clothes, and other consumer goods). Is there some subset of EV owners or new intenders who would happily buy an "ALL NEW MODEL S?" Even as I write that, I get a little buzz. Imagine what a Gen 2 Model S or X could be? Look how snazzy Gen 2 Roadster concept looked. Surely others feel the same. Longer term question: as more EVs come to market, and range anxiety, recharge time and performance all become commodities (that is, no one worries about how far you can go or how long it takes to drive, and all EVs are fast, quiet, etc.), the only thing that will set car makers apart is the experience they deliver - styling is one, UX in the vehicle is the other... What I mean is a Ferrari EV will be different from a Porsche EV from a Lamborghini EV from a Tesla how?? Styling becomes more more important in my mind; differentiating on UX is obviously critical... That's it. Swirling thoughts.

      @@EdwardLoh I mean the Volkswagen beetle was largely unchanged for 30years design wise. Not saying the model S is as Iconic but a single design can last a long time. They probably won't _have_ to differentiate much at all for a while. The 2016 nose job was only 7 years ago. Absolutely people love new and novel, I think tesla cares more about their mission though maybe. Perhaps they will refresh the model S/X when they retool the Fremont Factory to match the texas or mexico production process.

    Franz has his finger squarely on the pulse of the future, and correctly, the current and upcoming generation's perception shift of transportation. There was a time when entering a vehicle was actually a choice, a choice defined by your taste in vehicles. That nostalgia, although many legacy mindsets are unnaturally forcing the concept to remain relevant, have lost the fight already, and don't even know it. Uber was the paradigm that made the shift of knowing the vehicle you were being seen in, as an associated status symbol -whether your friends, family, or someone taking you out- is now just a vehicle that takes me from A to B. You only are made aware of the type, because you need to recognise if that's the specific Uber ordered. Yes, it's still a thrill to hop in a lambo or Bentley, if you hop in a uber of that vehicle brand, but, there was a time that you would only dream of even actually driving in one of those, if a) you actually brought one, or b) you knew someone close enough willing to transport in one. Point being, a person really doesn't factor in what vehicle they're specifically riding in, when ubering. They hop in, get to where they're going, then get out. This is what Franz was emphasizing. Robotaxi, Autonomous driving with Tesla's FSD, in all of Tesla"s vehicle line up, will begin to be utilised much in the very same way, as are in the minds of current uber users -its just something that will get me from A to B in the most expedient and comfortable manner without too much of my own attention from being distracted or diverted away from what I wish to focus on whilst being transported. Simply, we will all become fed-exed packages. Why worry about having an operator mindset, when what's transporting you isn't yours and you only care about getting to your next appointment? So why worry about superficial design when being transported? How many of us who actually fly frequently, know the brand of Airbus or commercial plane that's transporting us, or care about its exterior design features? We have grown up in a generational acceptance that flying is not for basic users going from a to b, and so, this will become the very same reality to the generation who will be fully immersed in that paradigm and operating a vehicle will become as synonymous as any of us wanting to fly our own jet to transport ourselves. It'll be reserved only for those who hold to this era's idea of transportation ownership. In the future, they won't care. I'll be working two 4-hour shifts remotely with one break at a Tesla diner in a fsd vehicle, which will be so safe, with no abrupt stops or fear of accidents, as virtual shadow mode will predict all other fsd vehicles on the road and plot ahead to ensure a seamless travel experience, and finish my day on the West Coast, just coz I wanted to see the sunset the next morning with a date!

    Very interesting interview. I'm glad I took the time to listen to it. I'm pretty sure it won't happen, but it would be awesome to see Tesla shock the world again and make a minivan. I think they would do well here in the US, and almost certainly do well in China given their popularity over there.

    Great interview! I’ve wondered why Tesla doesn’t purchase someone like Unplugged Performance and then have them be a company that tunes your car from the factory with special add-on? Although I guess it would bottleneck deliveries and add a lot of complexity? I just think it would be cool to order your car and get it with cool add-ons already installed.

      Franz is fan of UP and has modded his personal Tesla with UP products. Regular consumers don’t need UP level products for regular driving and that would add cost and complexity to the production line.
