I look back at 65 years of age and marvel that this was just what we heard everyday on the radio. So many artists that are revered today that were just the latest to be played back then. I have been blessed to hear so many great artists over the years and Bob was certainly a part of my music collection.
We had such a wide variety of excellent music as close as the radio. I was so naive I expected music to just keep getting better. I was disappointed. 71 and have seen and heard a lot.
The song literally says”””There was this long lovely dancer in a club downtown”, so, yes, the song is about a stripper. Also, the bassist on this recording was none other than Carol Kaye of the famed “Wrecking Crew”. Back then music was laid down on tape and studio time was outrageously expensive so you hired pro session musicians to save time/money.
This is an S Tier song for me! Just the tone of the guitar sparks nostalgia, as he looks back on past memories. The line, “Her body softly swaying to that smoky beat “ paints a vivid picture in your mind. The more you listen to it the better it gets!
This song creates a very strong atmosphere to the relatable story, melodically powerful. Yes, they definitely undergraded it (though I'd go A+, not quite S). But in their defense, I think this song is one of those you need to hear a handful of times to fully appreciate.
You mentioned "Roll Me Away" as a possible next Seger tune. I would definitely recommend it. It's got that Seger storytelling thing goin' on and the breakdown/buildup of the last verse and chorus is a sonic beauty to behold, right up to the last line, which fairly explodes. If any song could make you believe you could fly, this would be the one.
@@bethcrumpton476 I think that might've been the first time l heard the song. If not, then it was the first time l really HEARD it. The way it was used during the closing credits was masterful. Thanks for bringing up "Mask." It was one of the first movies l ever binged-watched . . . in the theater!
Check out “Her Strut” next. Arguably Bob Seeger’s greatest banger. Also, the chorus contains the greatest double entendre ever in the history of rock music.
Her strut is a great tune. You guys are getting soft with your music choices. I remember you guys looking at bangers. Two more suggestions: brontosaurus by the move, and spooky tooth. The album's called spooky2. Rock on
Glad you finally go to Bob’s other masterpiece in my opinion - my second favorite Seger song after “Night Moves,” both “S-tier” in my book. This and “Night Moves” have never been surpassed in conveying both the unique emotions of coming into manhood, and nostalgia for that time in life. The feel of the guitar in this has never been topped for me in terms of perfectly matching the emotion of a song’s lyrics.
I think they were going into this wanting the rockin' Seger and weren't able to get into the vibe. Hopefully they'll give this another listen at some point. @@moniphil
You’re speaking as a big fan of this artist snd genre. I like Seger ALLOT but I wouldn’t rate this as equal to Pink Floyd, the best of Queen ir Zeppelin etc. A&A are comparing this song to ALL the music they’ve heard over the years. I think , even as a fan, that B+ is fair. It’s not even among his best songs imo. Keep in mind that they said they have revised they’re rating system. They’re harder graders now. They r heard enough rock now to have allot of comparisons.
This was my favorite cut off the "Night Moves" album; an album all about Bob's misspent youth. I'm so grateful we had great music like this on our radios, turntables and 8-tracks. I'm sure we took it for granted and thought music would always be this good.
Actually I remember the day when I asked myself how can the music keep being so good? The music would be so fantastic every week would be something new coming out in different. And I just thought where can it go from here how can they keep coming up with this stuff? Well it literally went downhill for the most part each decade after.
@@tjtampa214 The last 10 years have been abysmal. There was still some hope from about 2000-2005. Now there's none in the mainstream. Still a lot of talent out there on the internet.
You guys are lost. My favorite Bob Seger song. The acoustic and piano meld perfectly. Every instrument does its part flawlessly. Great story telling as usual. His stepping away from the microphone at the end to show the fading memory is epic Bob.
Damn right it’s dope . That’s a masterpiece of songwriting and performance. At least to this 62 year old who was about 16 when this came out . Nice job guys .
Glenn Frey from the Eagles was a good friend of Bob Seger. Bob told Glenn that he had these softer songs and Glenn said he should put them to a record. Bob was concerned because he said his fans are used to his rockin stuff but Glenn convinced him. Thank you Glenn Frey
This song is reality from youth, for me. 14 years old, standing on a small town main street outside the bar that advertised "Exotic Dancing" and trying to see the corner of the stage, through the front window and past the cash register for the off sale store in front of the bar. This song has struck a nostalgic note for me, ever since the first time I heard it at age 17-18. The whole Night Moves album feels to me like a nostalgic look back from his thirties. I hope you'll get to Rock & Roll Never Forgets, as it is another fantastic "looking back" song that will also kick your butt a little bit.
Senior year high school, three friends and I decide on a whim to go to Printer’s Alley (speaking on Nashville). A couple beers at the Captain’s Table, and we found ourselves outside the Black Poodle “trying to get our courage up.” As we were working to convince the least adventurous among us the door opened and the bouncer said, “show’s just starting, would you gentlemen like to come in?” I still can’t hear the song “Centerfold” without thinking of that night and the most beautiful woman I had ever seen.
I remember on a number of occasions, my buddy picking me up in his station wagon and listening to this song on the way to high school. I look back now and realize that those were special times.
As others have suggested, Roll Me Away should be next. The Seegs is always special but that one will make you want to hop on a motorcycle and ride. It's a vibe.
I have a very specific image in my head of the singer viewing the bar from the window and then watching the girl walk down the darkened street alone later. I’ve listened to this song for decades and every time the same images pop up. That’s a storyteller. 🎶❤️
I don't care what other people say ,but for me no matter how many lists of 'greatest male singers ' there are , Mr Bob Seger will be one of the very first names on any compilation ...every time ! He is so good at telling stories with his songs and singing prowess ,it's as if I'm right there with him in the recording booth ..effortless might and power !
"Like A Rock" will get slammed for being part of Chevrolet's add campaign, but when you listen to the whole song and let the emotion kick in, it truly is one of his best. If you don't dig it now, just wait until you are a little older.
This song is such a vibe and puts you immediately in a place of melancholy joy. Notice the way the guitar solo in the middle stands out without ruining that vibe...it sort of flows with it. What I love about this channel is the joy of watching you guys discover music that we lived through. Thanks again for the memories.
Been watching A&A for several years now. You two do the best music-reaction videos. You don't stop the song, talk excessively over it, and your enthusiasm really comes across as genuine. Plus, as musicians yourselves, your input is valid and knowledgeable.
Seger is a Michigan legend, and this song is about a "dancer" in a club on Main Street in Ann Arbor. You can almost see it happening when you listen to the song. Love Seger.
Seger on the origins of the song: Just like "Night Moves," that song rings true. What do they tell you about writing? They say you have to write about what you know. I grew up near that street corner. My older brother was a lot of trouble and I was not. My parents always called me "the good one" and they said: "You're the one we can trust." So at age 10, 11, 12 I was able to walk through Ann Arbor until midnight if I felt like it. There was a club, and this blues band from Chicago named Washboard Willie was playing there. In the window of this club there were people dancing, and occasionally there would be a beautiful girl dancing in the window. And at my age you were starting to wake up to girls. I would sit out there and watch through the window and listen to this great R&B. I'm looking and I'm listening and thinking this is what I wanna do with my life. The club was very lively, and to a 12, 13-year-old that was pretty cool. I loved the groove because it's Chicago blues, and the women are dancing and you're starting to think the women are looking pretty good. So all that stuff ended up becoming the elements for the song "Mainstreet."
Another banger recorded with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, who played on some of the most iconic albums ever recorded. In interviews they said that Bob gave them credit on the songs and has paid them all these years, without a contract. A true handshake deal and it just shows what kind of person Bob Seger is. Something as simple as the main guitar riff on Mainstreet can make all the difference in a song and Bob understands that.
Bob always sets up a video in my head. I can see that underage kid just waiting for a glimpse of her walking down the street. I’ve always loved this song. Thanks for watching!
Aint that the truth. This song is so visual, if that makes sense. I think we have all had that one teenage crush, too. Makes the song that much more poingiant.
I can still remember Bob playing this at his show in '83 - the crowd was lit and the Silver Bullet Band was great! The same as the album but better cuz it was live!
A friend of mine back in the day coaxed me into going seeing him live. The only reason I went was because they were front- row center seats. Bob and his band were amazing and really belted out their tunes. That turned me into a big Seger fan right then and there. And YES, you MUST hit Roll Me Away. It's a jammer and a half!
Probably my favorite Seger song. And little did I know that it was recorded in my home county, Lauderdale County AL…just across the Tennessee River in Sheffield. Local Florence guitarist Pete Carr on lead guitar. Pete died in 2020. BTW: Seger’s only #1 song, “Shakedown,” could easily be chosen as a song lots of people love and hate.
@@richsalm7474 He played the lead on many songs on There Goes Rhymin’ Simon, didn’t he? Like Kodachrome. Also on Barbara Streisand’s Guilty album. I’m not a huge Streisand fan, but the playing is immaculate. Also player lead during Simón & Garfunkel’s Central Park Reunion.
You can never go wrong with Bob Seger and his awesome band...I used to walk down mainstreet in my small town in Virginia ( Danville ) listening to this song all the time...Great memories.
Love the new set! Look at you two now! In your mid-twenties...you've come a long way in your education, work and your experiences with music. I'm proud of you, Andy and Alex! Thanks for all of your reactions and responses.
"Roll Me Away" is good, a song that you should probably hear eventually. I think it would be my 3rd choice for your next Seger song, with my first 2 choices being "Rock & Roll Never Forgets" and "Still the Same". BTW, I really like the look of the house that you did this reaction in. And the 2 paintings, one on each side of the screen, are both appealing paintings and well-situated for the angle that this video is shot from.
Thanks very much for sharing this with us! This is my favorite Bob Seger song from when it first came out on the FM radio until now. I purchased the LP the second time I heard it. Hope you and your dear families have a wonderful year! Keep on keeping on. Awesome! song.
My favorite Seger LP. Came out fall of 76. Beginning of my Junior yr in HS. Bob Seger music brings me back to a time I miss. Just like his lyrics describe. "Sometimes even now When I'm feelin' lonely and beat I drift back in time and I find my feet".
This was really good commentary on this great song. I love Bob Seger! He is such a great storyteller. He paints a vivid picture for you of what life is like. Great reaction!
This was recorded with the legendary "Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section", also known as "The Swampers". Unbelievable group of musicians with a ton of great sessions with great performers under their belt.
I've heard it a million times and I'll be very happy to hear it another million. I can't recall the other Bob tunes you've done but, if you want more rockin', try Her Strut, Come to Poppa or Feel Like a Number.
"Feel Like A Number," for sure. Bob knows how to lay down a groove that just pulls you into a song. Pretty soon you're saying, "Oh, so this is where we're going . . . . Okay . . . .Nice."
I've been requesting it for 2-3 years, but you guys should do a reaction to Bob Seger's Betty Lou's Gettin' Out Tonight. It's definitely an S tier banger. This song isn't about a stripper or strip club, it's about a blues club near where Seger grew up and he wrote this song after hanging outside of the club when he was around 13-14 years old to listen to a Chicago blues band called Washboard Willie. He saw people dancing in the club and one of them was the younger lady that he sings about in the song. 🤘✌️
Idk... Sceptic me wants to say sounds kinda like "the cleaned up version" of the tale an artist might give to an interviewer with a PG audience. Lol Non skeptical me: Great background info to a great song!
Bob is one of those artists I would not say I was a fan, I never had any of his albums, but listening to the radio I find I can sing along to all of his stuff that got airplay. Gives me Jr High vibes.
Diggin the longer hair Andy :) I will continue to brag that I saw this amazing talent 3 times in concert over 20 yrs and The concerts were perfect, seriously even better his bands over the years again perfect! so fun and I feel so fortunate. Cheers Boys

I’ve long thought this is pretty much a perfect song. Great lyric. Fantastic haunting guitar. Nice twist with the guitar on the outtro. Tasty piano part. Must be my favourite Seger song.
No, that would have been the single before it, "Night Moves," which made the top 10. "Mainstreet" stalled at #19 for some reason (maybe because so many bought the album). We agree, though, that it is Seger's best. But while "Night Moves" made him REALLY famous, he was already known for "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man," which made the top 20 in late '68 or early '69.
@@mrsteve3527Easy to do. In 1976, I saw Seger opening for the Doobie Brothers about a month before LIVE BULLET came out. Wonderful 30 minute set, I wanted more. I picked up LIVE BULLET when I first saw it, and did the same with NIGHT MOVES later that year.
That main riff brings me back. I was a kid then, and I went with my mom to the bars sometimes back when there weren't any babysitters available. She hung out with her friends while me and my sister played on the shuffleboard table. Total bar jukebox song.
It doesn't get any better 😎 Bob is the Man! He puts us right in the story, every time I hear this I'm on a small town Main street watching his story unfold before my eyes...

@@richsalm7474 Such great tone and simplicity. Can’t believe A&A didn’t notice.
Yes, there is hope after all!
Saw Seger sing this on tour. Spectacular raspy voice and fantastic storytelling. Rock ‘n Roll…forever
Yep. "Roll Me Away" for the next Seger. Great choice.
Yes roll me away.
Summer 1977. This was my..3rd Grade show n tell Record ⏺..love it
Bob Seager, live is the best. So many suggestions, another one, he closes the show with, Get Outta Denver, total rocker. Thanks guys.
Thanks very much for sharing this with us!
This is my favorite Bob Seger song from
when it first came out on the FM radio until now.
I purchased the LP the second time I heard it.
Hope you and your dear families have a
wonderful year! Keep on keeping on.
Awesome! song.
Love how the final four ‘down on main street’ vocals fade into memory-like echoes.
My favorite Seger LP. Came out fall of 76. Beginning of my Junior yr in HS. Bob Seger music brings me back to a time I miss. Just like his lyrics describe.
"Sometimes even now
When I'm feelin' lonely and beat
I drift back in time and I find my feet".
This was really good
commentary on this great song. I love Bob Seger! He is such a great storyteller. He paints a vivid picture for you of what life is like.
Great reaction!
Roll me away has got to be the next song you hit
Yes, My fav Seger Song. So uplifting and inspiring
Bob Seger is warm and comfortable like a firelit cabin. Love his voice, his memory songs.
This was recorded with the legendary "Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section", also known as "The Swampers". Unbelievable group of musicians with a ton of great sessions with great performers under their belt.
Roll Me Away is absolutely the next song that you should visit!!!
Pretty soon you're saying, "Oh, so this is where we're going . . . . Okay . . . .Nice."
Joe, we will probably have to explain to the youngsters what "Ma Bell" means! LOL
Great song.
Idk... Sceptic me wants to say sounds kinda like "the cleaned up version" of the tale an artist might give to an interviewer with a PG audience. Lol
Non skeptical me: Great background info to a great song!
So smooth. This is soundtrack of 100 million of us. Our youth
I remember telling you guys you would love Bob Seger before you knew him. His lyrics are amazing. and old school rock and roll.
My favorite Seger song. Brilliant!
ive probably heard this song a thousand times still gives me chills
Living here in Michigan, we Love Uncle Bob! ❤
Love me some Seger, especially ballads like this one. Thanks guys.
Bob is one of those artists I would not say I was a fan, I never had any of his albums, but listening to the radio I find I can sing along to all of his stuff that got airplay. Gives me Jr High vibes.
Bob and his band of musicians put on one helluva show.
Hey nice new setting! Bob Seger is amazing in so many ways. Thanks for covering this.
Diggin the longer hair Andy :) I will continue to brag that I saw this amazing talent 3 times in concert over 20 yrs and The concerts were perfect, seriously even better his bands over the years again perfect! so fun and I feel so fortunate. Cheers Boys
Bob Seger knew how to put together a song, and then deliver it. Great story teller with his music.
Segs for the win! I always loved that simple guitar tone, as well as the story. Great reaction!
I love you two!... Been watching for a while... You keep listening and I will keep watching
High School dance music from back in the day! Thanks for the memories!!!! This is one of his best songs, along with Roll Me Away!
Another vote for Roll Me Away!
@@joekennedy4662 That song is so amazing!! I can picture it all, the guys are right, Segar had an amazing way of illustrating the songs
@@redroads4598 Some would say of the music back then that "the words aren't important." This is a man who could craft both words and music, and we're all better off for it.
For me, Mainstreet is a minimum A..it's just a classic.
Roll Me Away is a definite DO! Such great lyrics & Seger growl. Lyrically it paints an easy visual & it kicks A$$ too!
🦅..& my soul began to rise...
✌️❤️🇦🇺🦘🌏
I'm pushing for Roll Me Away, too. I keep thinking, "Next time, guys . . . next time . . . you'll get it right." Good choice.
I’ve long thought this is pretty much a perfect song. Great lyric. Fantastic haunting guitar. Nice twist with the guitar on the outtro. Tasty piano part. Must be my favourite Seger song.
Bob Seger's best song. This is the song that made him famous.
@@josephself2610 I might have my songs reversed. I was like 15 or 16 when Night Moves and Main Street came out. 45 years ago...lol.
Andy & Alex - I’ve been waiting years for y’all to hear this masterpiece! A guitar seriously “weepin”
Having lived a couple blocks from Main Street in Bob's hometown of Ann Arbor, I always loved this song.
Great song , Bob Seger is one of the best , still going strong .
Bob Seger is a retired American singer, songwriter, and musician. He's 76 and pretty much said enough is enough. But we've heard that from other bands/singers and then again money talks sometimes.
