Thank you so much for this demonstration, I have painted for years using oil paint but I knew nothing about this medium. If only I was younger, I’m too old to start this now but I sure would love to, I’m 88. Gwen
This was MOST excellent ! I like the Jack Richeson underpainting sticks that I just had to order some. I've never seen them demonstrated and I really like how it covers the paper and looks so interesting. This is a great painting topic. Thank you for sharing your creativity.
Hi Karen thank you for this awesome lesson. Your paintings is beautiful I love the way you painted small branches on the tree. This painting was beautiful at every stage.🙏🙏

What was the dark ink block that was used in the initial stages of blocking in the tree trunk and branches? I thought it was something different from the Richeson blocks. TIA
I just got some pads of watercolor canvas sheets. It has a slight texture and I am wondering if you have tried it for pastel painting? I may have to try for both pastels and watercolor.
I have tried it and it works fine. Of course the canvas gives a different texture to the painting but that is fine! It would be fun to do a watercolor underpainting and then pastel on top!
Hi Mark, thanks for asking! I don't mind if you'd like to paint along with me! I just ask that any paintings done from my demo be for your personal practice only and not for sale or exhibitions. I hope you enjoy!! Thanks for watching my videos!
Es ist erstaunlich, was du wieder aus einem tristen Foto zauberst. Ich werde es auch wieder nachmachen. Erfolgt eine Schlussfixierung. Bei mir wird dann das Bild immer so dunkel.
You are a fabulous teacher!,,,
karen, if you don't have underpainting squares, charcoal sticks? wow, what a video!
Thanks for watching! I have not tried charcoal for wet underpaintings but you can use dark value pastels.
@@KarenMargulis Thanks!
You’re so artistic and so kind to show us how to do these things. Thanks Karen 🙏🏻
Thank you so much for watching!
I really liked this at 11:06 just after the wet underpainting was finished.... I would have happily framed it and hung it on my wall at that point!
It would be fun to be brave and just stop at the underpainting!
Stunning. From the underpainting to the end. This one didn’t go through the ugly stage!! ☺️
Aww thanks! I appreciate your comment!
So many colors still alive in winter !!! Thank you

Thanks, Karen. Exciting color during the drab winter season…inspiring!
You are so welcome!
Really enjoyed this. Have just bought a set of Sennelier pastels and am not the boss if them yet.
Have fun! I didn't like them at first because they were so soft but now they are an ignorant part of my process.
@@KarenMargulis lol I think you meant important. I am the one who is still ignorant of so much in art.
Wow, all those colours. Very inspiring.
Thanks so much 😊
Фотография больше похожа на нашу осень. Потрясающе получилось!

Karen, I learned so much doing this painting. Thank you! I would love to show you how it turned out and have you critique it. How can I do that?

When you had that 'drab' portion below the tree would it have been an option to bring the tree forward?
What was the dark ink block that was used in the initial stages of blocking in the tree trunk and branches? I thought it was something different from the Richeson blocks. TIA
Yes. It is a black art Graf tailors block which is basically ink in a block form. They are wonderful for underpainting!
I just got some pads of watercolor canvas sheets. It has a slight texture and I am wondering if you have tried it for pastel painting? I may have to try for both pastels and watercolor.

@@KarenMargulis Great idea. I'll try that.
The alcohol wash is it the same cleaning product that cleans glass?
No I am using isopropyl rubbing alcohol 70%
😍😍😍
Thanks for watching!
Hi Karen. Do you mind if people paint along with you? I’d love to have a go at painting this scene but wanted to ask permission first
Hi Mark, thanks for asking! I don't mind if you'd like to paint along with me! I just ask that any paintings done from my demo be for your personal practice only and not for sale or exhibitions. I hope you enjoy!! Thanks for watching my videos!
@@KarenMargulis Thanks Karen! I feel much better having asked. Will respect your wishes 100%. Thank you again for the inspiration! 😊

How would you paint a summer scene with water and a dam?
I'll add it to my list of subjects!
