Another excellent demo. Stunning as is. Look forward to it's completion. Thanks too for the great tip on tinting the gesso. You are a font of wonderful ideas!
I'm here to say thanks for pastel shipping tips. It arrived in Vegas and is now hanging on my friend's office wall. I will be doing it again soon with confidence.
Karen, that is such a brilliant idea! Tinted gesso. I have such a problem with underpainting and this will go a long way to help with that. Thanks. I will now go back to the video to watch the rest of it. :o)
Lovely video and wonderful painting! I like to use watercolor paint to color my clear gesso, I have had trouble with acrylics clogging the surface but watercolor paints just mix right in! Thank you for sharing this wonderful video and grand technique!
Great demo, Karen - I’m intrigued by your gesso prep, I fancy having a go at that. In your follow-up chat, you mentioned ‘Sauce Sticks’ - what are they, please?
Thanks! It really depend on the conditions...humidty etc and how thick you apply the gesso but I find a thinner coat will dry in under 30 minutes. You could use it for plein air if your conditions are stable and you start another painting while the gesso one dries!
I understand why you didn't go for dark green on the trees right away. I have found that using only local colour gives a strange, crayons-and-coloring-book feel to the painting. It's weird but true!
Wouldn't it be more effective to first make the underpainting using only the gray acrylic on the Rives paper, let it dry, and then go over the top of the acrylic underpainting with the clear gesso? That could remove the risk of losing the tooth created by the clear gesso.
Thanks for letting me know. I have only selected a skippable ad before the video but I don't see how to choose the length. I try to use the bare minimum of ad choices. Was the ad not skippable? I am looking into what went wrong! I don't want anyone to have to see a long ad!!
@@KarenMargulis I made the mistake of watching a very long advertisement, it was Dr. Marty’s dog food and it was like 45 minutes! I get a lot of longer ads at the beginning of videos lately! It might be your viewers habits not your settings! Just in case you don’t find an answer.

Great idea to use the gesso. The marks really help with the lines in the rocks and the movement of the water. Oooh can’t wait to try it. Thanks
Thanks so much! 😊 Have fun!
Awesome video as always... mountain in back's true colors are in the water reflection :-)

I Never tinted my gesso, wow that’s a great idea ! Love Yosemite National Park.
Was only 1/1/2 hours away before moving out in 2015. Thank you Karen .

I really like this one. Reminds me of Thomas Hill’s painting.
Thank you very much!

Great video. What grit level would you estimate the clear gesso to be? 400?
Merci Karen !
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you. ✨
Love how this took shape. How long does it take for the gesso to dry? Is this an idea that could be used plein air?
Thanks! It really depend on the conditions...humidty etc and how thick you apply the gesso but I find a thinner coat will dry in under 30 minutes. You could use it for plein air if your conditions are stable and you start another painting while the gesso one dries!
Can I use regular white gesso instead of clear?
No. The clear gesso has a grittiness to it that the white gesso doesnt.

Well said!! Thanks for watching!
I found that the paint gave my surface a plasticy feel and took away some of the tooth which made the surface slick! I guess too much acrylic paint
I have had that happen when I made the paint a bit too thick!

I HAVE QUITE A BIT OF CANSON MITIENS THAT I HAVE NEGLECTED BECAUSE I PREFER SANDED PAPER….I WILL NOW MAKE THEM SANDED WITH GESSO HAPPILY…..THANKS
Thanks for watching. Have fun repurposing your paper!
