      Airbag suspension and Mogs doesn't seem to be a thing but I'm not too sure why. I think the springs may have too much travel to run a sufficiently rigid airbag.

  • @UnimogAdventures
    @UnimogAdventures ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great video, we loved our trip down the Gibb River Road. Looks very quiet up there, and the rivers look quite full.
    Judging my the sweat and dirt, changing the tube was a bit of work, gave you your workout for the day Chris. 😁 Looks like the tube has been moving to get all the dust, could be the corrugations. Did you put the talcum powder in to help lubricate it, helps to minimise the wear. I think you were lucky it was a quick deflation, a slow leak would have heated up the tyre until you had a full blow out destroying the tyre which would have been really expensive. I would get a cheap tyre pressure monitor, it would warn you when one of the tyres loses a bit of air. We ran the ones that screw onto the valve for years, cheap insurance for those very expensive tyres.
    The Hutchinsons would make your truck a lot wider, and the may lead to more sidewall damage on the narrower track you guys seem to go on quite a bit. The advantage would be you could drop tyre pressures really low to help you get unstuck, without the tyre de-beading, but you have other ways of recovery and we agree, that for you, it would not be worth the expense to change over to the Hutchinson.
    We have beadlock wheels on our Unimog, but since it is a smaller truck with the 6 bolt Mog Central wheels, they keep the same track width as the steel one, so has all the advantages of the Hutchinsens without the extra width. They are still a big pain to change the tyres, as everything has of be perfect for them the seal properly. We have the inner bead locks, and have tested them in the garage down to 5PSI without the tyre de-beading off the wheel.
    Keepup the great work, and hopefully we can meet up on the road one day.

    • @TheOutFit
      @TheOutFit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Ian, yes would be very nice to meet you both one day soon.
      It's always a workout changing the tube but because I've done it quite a few times it's not too daunting anymore and just a part of the journey which is nice.
      I really should buy a TPMS, I just can't decide on which brand. They all seem to have 50/50 positive and negative reviews...
      The wider stance with the Hutchies on the U1700's looks really tough but I know from a practical stand-point they could do Ange and I more harm than good. It's a shame I can't get them without such an offset. Still tempted though if I ever get a good deal on some second-hand ones.
      Hope you both are well

    You will always have this problem when riding with low tire pressure.
    the only solution is tubeless.
    split rims work on road vehicles where the tire has virtually "no deformation".

    I seen online they make a tire several different sizes that is puncture resistant they don't go fast cuz they had a nail on sleep through it I should say a big old Spike and it never went flat and it went from small tires the tires bigger and nose ones I just don't remember where I seen it at it online and I know they weren't exactly cheap way they're talking about it for those tires but you might want to check into it so this way you don't have to keep doing what you're doing so that's why your terms would have more of a maintenance free hopefully so that way you don't have to keep doing what you're doing so well have a good day nice family

      395/85R20 now i am curious whats your tire size?
      We are from Europe, we habe 2 spares with us.
      If ever happens, that i need to change them outside of Europe, i would go for 14.00 R20 they would also fit. (I don’t want them, because slightly bigger 2 Spares do not fit in the back.)

    Hey Ange are you talking French to Oakley? It’s a hard habit to get into especially since I guess chris doesn’t speak it, my recommendation is while he is young try and get into the habit of saying looks at the beautiful river in English and then also French. Mail training yourself so when he is older it’s default to do both …. He might not speak it initially but he certainly will understand. Kids are amazing

    The editing is pretty flash now, compared to three years ago! Hope you threw a ton of talcum powder into that tyre to keep the rubbing between tube and tyre to a minimum. Kept in good nick, there's nothing so versatile as a split rim.

    The most important part of getting the tire off and moving it away from the vehicle and visa versa were cut out. It would be interesting to see.

    1. Do you spend more than one night in a location? It sometimes seems like you never stop to just chill out for a few days.
    2. How do you find the sound insulation in the cab now you have done a few thousand Km?

      1.) Sometimes depending on the location. We like to see new things all the time but we are trying to stop more. I'm sure we will do that by the coast.
      2.) Much much better than without the insulation. Helped hugely with cutting out the engine/trans heat too. Would do it again. Cheers

      Thank you :) Usually the big crocs in a particular river are known by the locals and (almost) always will be in the river where it's closer to the ocean. They definitely can come up river after the wet season but VERY unlikely a giant one would come out of those rivers we were at out of nowhere. Usually crocs will stalk their prey for many days before working out their movements and then striking from the water when the time is right

    Just thinking aloud here:-
    Can you go tubeless on these big wheels to minimise wear interaction between tyre and tube - and in the event of a penetrating puncture externally plug it without having to remove the wheel and tube?
    Like many others I have gone down this route with my motorcycle using the split tube or “ghetto” method
    Basically the tube is cut around it’s greater circumference and then re-installed like a filleted kipper. Once the tyre has been re fitted on top and pumped up the excess butyl tube is trimmed off. This means the tube is now clamped securely between the tyre bead and wheel rim and can no longer rub against the tyre whilst still acting as an airtight seal for the lower part of the chamber
    Here is a TH-cam explanation. th-cam.com/video/60bi1r2Xvbo/w-d-xo.html
    My second rather amateurish question is how are corrugations formed? The usual explanation is 4WD/AWD. But are there any contributions from water or even wind and why are they always contiguous across a track and usually the full width?
    Yep, your video shooting and editing skills are really showing through now - thank you

    • @TheOutFit
      @TheOutFit  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi mate, great question. As far as I'm aware, our stock ADF rims must be run with a tube. If I changed to the ex-USA army ones then I could definitely go without. Our tyres themselves can be run tubed or tubeless. That method you described sounds great but I wonder if it would only work on motorcycles due to there being much less weight on the tyre?
      As far as I'm aware, the main contributing factor to currugations forming is the type of ground material/gravel/sand/dirt. The softer the road, the worse the corrugations. One the Gibb we would look forward to the clay sections becuase there was almost no corrugations.
      On these roads, drivers take whatever route has the least corrugations which after a few days/weeks means the entire width of the road has them.
      No idea why they would always run in straight horizontal lines though...
      Less speed and lower tyre pressures definitely help them form slower on a road between graders. Cheers!

    Unimogs are appalling hyped junk. I owned the ex Swiss Army radio cab version. It was very underpowered, top speed 40 mph on the highway. The wheels are very heavy and difficult to change tires in the bush. I frequently encountered stuck with flat tires, or with overheated engines in Africa.
    You can charge Unimog owners to drag out their broken down vehicles when you encounter them..
