You guys are living the life, what an experience to last a lifetime. Leaving your job to do this was probably your best decision. Many people wait till they retire to do this, unfortunately a lot never make it.

It really is God's country. I spent a few years as a little tacker living out the north side of Cairns at Yorkey's Knob (Unfortunate name haha) before it became super expensive and returned as a twenty something to live in Cairns for a few years during the mid 90's. We used to camp out at Josephine's falls carpark and after dark there's these crazy little spring heeled marsupials that come out. They're only a foot high and when they felt they were a little too close would unexpectedly launch straight up into the air about 6 feet. I can't remember what they were called, but they were the funniest little animals I've ever seen.

I lived in Cairns from 1980-2001 (age 10-31). It was a great place to be a kid & grow up in. So much to see & do in & around Cairns. The Atherton tablelands is like a whole nother world.
Enjoy it up there & stay awhile. Don’t be in a hurry to leave 😎
Love your adventure as a family 💕💕💕💕💕

What’s great about most Aussie tourist spots, like the waterfalls, is there’s rarely big crowds. Asia has some great spots too, but generally heaps of people and not as untouched / clean. Also, Hubby got the pronunciation right for cairns - “cans”’😊

I'm glad you liked Josephine Falls. Millaa Millaa is another nice spot. The water may be cold but it's always free of crocodiles and box jellyfish, so that's a big plus. 35c to 37c here in South east Qld today so a dip there would have been most welcome. There are a few spots around Brisbane with similar rainforest pools and smaller waterfalls. You could board the tourist train in Redlynch just a little north west of Cairns. It stops at Stony Creek Falls and the Barron Falls then terminates in Kuranda. On the way back south, Mount Spec, Wallaman Falls & the Undara Lava tubes are worth a stop. Also the Cardwell mobile pie cart again! Airlie Beach for Whitehaven Beach and Agnes Waters make good stops too. It's coming into our hurricane season (tropical cyclones) so I understand the rush to get far north Qld out of the way asap.

Milla Milla is worth the swim out to the waterfall. Josephine falls is at the bottom of a 7.5km hike to the highest point in QLD which is the top of Mt Barte Frere. There is a helicopter port at the top and 500m climbing up of huge boulders at the top of the mountain, but no real view. That's one green leech infested hell if you venture off track 😅😀🇦🇺

I meant to jump into the comments of the Bribie Island video. The reason you're struggling with the pronunciations of Australian place names is due in part to the American accent being Rhotic, where as the Australian one isn't. So for example "Cairns" being pronounced what you would say as "cans", look at it from the perspective of "C-air-ns" and remember the non-rhotic R so instead of an "arr" we say "ahh".
Also, and this is much more regionalised in the USA, but your vowels are completely different to how we pronounce them. So, in "tomato" you say "toe-mae-toe" but we say "toe-mah-toe". When you were saying "Brib-bee Island" instead of "Bry-bee Island". And Caloundra to us aussie sounded like you were saying "Ka-lon-dra", the lou is the same as you would say in the word "cloud". Vowel placement is what separates the Aussie accent from the Kiwi one. The best way to make an Aussie sound like they're from New Zealand is to get them to say using their natural Aussie accent - "Mester Frid Smeth, please come to the chickin counter your teckit is riddy" 🙂 😛
