Absolutely love this album. Santa Fe is one of the best performances of his career imo.

Jon is a massively underrated singer. What sounds easy, isn't when you try and do it. He didn't have the highest range, nor did he try to. But he was THE SOUND of the late 80s and he's managed to keep it up with relentless touring, until the last few years. He is getting older, and he's voice has done many miles, but there isn't many people that could walk in his shoes and do what he's done over 40 + years. God bless Jon.

If he is underrated then he wouldn't sold millions of albums around the world. He even perform at royal palace and concerts thousands of times around the world. It's just like nowadays younger people aren't listening to good music they prefer shits and garbage.

Blaze of Glory is hands down the best album I've ever heard. This was Jon at his peak. The live version from 1991 academy awards gives me goosebumps. This whole album was just pure gold. Billy Get Your Guns, Blood Money, Miracle, Dyin' ain't much of a livin', and possibly my favorite vocals from Jon is Santa Fe. Just amazing how good he was back then. Also the young guns movies are classics, just watched them both again!
Thank you for this video Ken! Now we just need a reaction when he does this song live like I wrote above =P
Edit: Please do isolated vocals of Santa Fe :D

People/fans are forgetting how long Bon Jovi's concerts were. With each album/tour they've gotten longer. In the 90s they've gotten over 2 hours long, same in the 2000s and in 2010s, with up to 2.5hrs. On some occasions even almost 3 hours with more encores. And Jon really was a giver. He would sing Always in the 2nd encore, after already singing and running around the stage for 2+ hours and we all know, that Always is one of the toughest songs.
As much as I'm upset with him, that he didn't take care of his voice better, he always gave his best to the fans on the concerts. You have to give him props for that.

The movie producers wanted to Use dead or Alive, but Jon thought it wasn’t appropriate for the movie due to lyrics like “ on a steel horse I ride”
So he had a meeting with the producers and whilst they sat and ate burgers Jon wrote Blaze of Glory. They were gobsmacked.

This song is really clever, from the first couple of lines you see a cowboy in your head sleeping beside some fire (hopefully) with his coat under his head and then my brain moves into thoughts of the old westerns where they were going to face off on the street, that whistling sound all movies seemed to have and their boots on the board sidewalks before stepping down into a dust blowing street? It is just that well written. ❤️

As a foreigner myself I enjoyed learning English translating their songs. I love your analysis regardless of the artists. You are such a genuine, sincere and full of passion vocal coach. I really enjoy those iso tracks- great work Ken. In terms of Jon's singing: the great ones know what the song needs and give it just that. A lot of times we want to show everything that we've got, so we over-sing, over- dramatize, lose dynamics or (and as a guitarist I know we are very often guilty of that) we simply over-play. That is actually a very important skill, to understand what the song needs.

  • @HarlemRain75

I've always said the entire soundtrack is a masterpiece. Listen to it from beginning to end and each song builds the story in succession. The first song, Billy Get Your guns shows youthful energy and there's a sense of excitement about being an outlaw; blaze of glory tells the story of the reality of life as an outlaw; blood money is where he faces betrayal and loses any naivety he may have had left; santa fe, justice in the barrel and never say die all convey a steely resolve even tho times are tough; and bang a drum and dying ain't much of a living finish the album with a man that is reflecting on his life and is feeling tired and remorseful and like he's had enough.
If you listen to Billy Get Your guns followed by Dying ain't much of a living you can compare the same person when he's young and enthusiastic to when he's older and jaded. Brilliant.
Ken, please do a vocal anaylis of santa fe. I would also like to hear you sing it. It's a powerhouse vocal and the lyrics are outstanding.

Jon Bon Jovi sang the fuck out of this song! 🤘 Unfortunately, there's no way he could sing this song anywhere near the original these days. Up to "... and the Earth was last nights bed" he would still make it, but the rest? Forget it. The 2011 Hyde Park performance was still good though 👍. "Blaze Of Glory" is one of his best moments lyrically, in my opinion. This song was a statement for him as a songwriter. Obviously most of the material was previously co-written with Richie Sambora, but "Blaze Of Glory" proved that he could also write more stuff on his own and that set him apart from others of his peers, showing critics that he was more than just a pretty boy from a so-called hair metal band. "Bed Of Roses", "I Believe", "Dry County" and "Always" followed.

Totally agree that the lyrics hit the jackpot. I always thought Jon improved with Richie or Desmond Child co-writing. But total props here. Gotta believe a #1 hit song by the hottest guy in the late '80s elevated the box office because the song is so cinematic. Jon always seemed like the type to do a male / machismo version of Liza Minelli to a certain degree but it was successful. I didn't realize that he basically assembled a super group for this song. Imagine these guys doing an album together in the '90s.

Love these isolated vocals. It definitely gives an extra, or new nod to some lyrics, that aren't focal points, in the finished track.
Yes, JBJ went to Catholic school, & was even an Altar boy so the biblical lines are a great canon for him to utilise.
I love the: "I'm a colt in your stable, I'm what Cain was to Abel, Mr catch me, if you can." line, although it to me about 15yrs (pre-Google) to work it out, lol.
Richie def isn't credited, so pretty sure he wasn't helping out for free. I think the film company "wanted" to use Wanted 🙄(sorry) , but Jon wanted to write something specifically for the movie.
He won a Golden Globe & Oscar nomination, for his trouble! 😁

Just discovered your channel and at 50 years old, I’m starting an adventure in rock!!!!! I’ve always wanted to sing and play guitar and your vids like this one are so inspiring. Especially since JBJ was one of my musical heroes as a young person and I managed to see them live in Australia back in the 80s. Analysing every second of his performances was something I did regularly back then. I felt like we were kicking back with a cuppa and talking about the good old days of rock during this (including power rock moves and air guitar etc 😂😂) it felt good! So Thankyou for putting this kind of thing out there 🙏🙏🙏. Now back to my beginner guitar and singing exercises 🥰 rock on 🤘🏻 🙏🙏💖

Fun Fact: Jon was having dinner with Emilio Estevez and Kiefer Sutherland. And while they were talking they realized Jon wasn't really involved in the conversation. When they asked him what was he doing, he turned a napkin towards them with the "blaze of glory lyrics". It took him 15 minutes to write the song. Kiefer still has that napkin.

Thanks for the info on how to perform a song... particularly the "overdoing" part. I didn't know that. So now I will keep it mind as I am working on Sia Chandelier and the low part can be really boring unless you do something with it re- attitude.

I am not a writer by any means. But Jon's lyrics on this song captured Young Guns 2 and Billy The Kid perfectly. His other songs on the sound track did as well. This song wasn't even in the movie until the very end of the movie.

That Jeff Beck solo part is so incredible…
John once listed Beck as his favorite…

It’s funny, I was hoping you would do this song and here it is. I loved this song having seen the movie in the theater in the 80s and it had an excellent score by Alan Silvestri. Even bought the cd single (still have) lol. Great insight as always KT and look forward to the next one.
