Prime Axl was in a world of his own.
When Axl goes, and God forbid it’ll be awhile, people will forget the showing up late, the 15 year gaps between albums and remember him as an INSANE talent and completely authentic rock n’ roll singer.

Cool video, just randomly presented to me by the algorithm! Enjoyed your analysis and enthusiasm! I was a big GnR fan as a kid in the 80s and still like playing the tunes on guitar. Axl’s voice is certainly an acquired taste. It worked well for the music in that it conveyed so much intensity and aggression, but it always seemed rather laborious and tough on the cords. I always like when he sang from the lower register, very pleasant dare I say pretty voice. It’s cool that they are playing now but it pains me to hear him sing all those classic tunes in falsetto now.

Right off the bat I'm truly enjoying your isolated vocal analysis . Funny story when I learned how to nail the opening scream for " Welcome 2 Jungle " many years ago is what gave me the confidence to remain learning how the preceding 18 years to now . As good as he is . To be fair take away all that rasp . You have a singer whom use a head voice or partial head voice ( mixed voice ) from A above middle c and beyond . In his prime in live settings . He didn't have all those multi trackings .You really could hear he wasn't very loud at all. As you said he's not pushing nearly as hard as people think .

If you can get away with it, you should do a review of this live from the 1988 MTV VMA's. That may be one of the better live performances of this song and one of the better captured performances of the original lineup. That captures exactly what you are talking about with the entire bands energy. They came shot out of a cannon for that performance. Just stay away from the 2002 VMA's at all costs...

Axl went from F1 to C6 on Chinese Democracy (album) alone, when he was in his early 40s.
Add to that all the overtone howls and screams he pulled off in the 80s and early 90s, and he's up there at the top of the vocal ranges.

You’re spot on about the energy that the band gives to his vocals, but he delivers the lyrics with such venom aswell. Powerhouse vocals and band.
Ken Axl is a perfectionist he did all the songs in one take, he would not allow parts of the song to be punched in.
When you see GnR live and you hear Axl ask “ do you know where the f*ck you are???” Your hairs stand on end!

I heard Axl had Bipolar disorder. He started losing his hair from the valproate medication. His range was incredible. I’ve heard him be compared to Mariah Carey’s range. Axl had grown up with domestic violence & physical abuse & he always struck me as edgy & angrier than other singers. His voice is incredibly distinctive & he could go high & pull off difficult songs with the confident vocals David Lee Roth also had.

If I could be so bold, and yet so humble to bring a song request to you....It's a bit of an unusual song for me maybe, but one which from time to time I revert back to. It is the only song as far as I know which I have heard from the group. If for any reason you would not choose to do it, it's ok but I'd really love to hear what you would do with this particular song. There are parts of this song I can already hear you singing in my mind. Linda Perry who did it, I think did an amazing job at it. In my mind, it's a song I could hear you owning. Thank you if you'll consider it. The name of the song is "What's Up" by 4 Non Blondes. And from now on, I really promise I'll try and behave and stay on topic! :)

Until i was 30 something i always lived with roommates or girlfriends and then when i lived by myself i joined a band and at home i could practice all i wanted and mess up without fear of having people hear the mess. You definitley need privacy if you a naturally shy person like me.

Axl uses a strange technique to get the sound he gets. Its a vocal fry type distortion combined with strong use of mask and pharyngeal resonance. I can mimic it really close, its actually easier for me to sing in the "axl voice" than in my regular voice. I reckon its because the vocal fry brings the vocal chords closer together making it very effortless.

I've seen every GnR lineup about ten times from 1989 through last month. Still amazing. There's a little more Vince Neil nasally emphasis by Axl but its so minimal that that comparison is a disservice. I'm just describing the style, but the sound, tonality or power, all of which were still through the roof and top notch. I heard many people during and after the show saying how "amazing" he sounded. I can't name many 60 year olds who still pull off highs and range anywhere close to what Axl does.

I have been watching a ton of your videos. I'm a singer , been in bands since 1984. And just watching your videos have helped me so much. I'm a Robert plant/ Dio type singer, not nearly as good as them lol, but I've improved because of your videos. Thank you very much. PS, really like your singing. I want to hit some of the high notes I just can't hit. . I'll get it down through your videos and knowledge. 🤘🤘🤘🤘👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏🤘🤘🤘

Axl rose is like 59 Years old this year and People are saying yeah he sounds like Mickey mouse yeah he can dance blah blah blah but now here is the thing he poured out his raw vocals and power back in the day and everyone loved him like he ruled the world but then we all know what happened but now the band has being back together now for 6 years again and every year Axl gets better and better And his vocals in some songs are un touchable till this day like I.R.S no one can reach that and thats what I love about him is that he tries everytime and when he does a live show he always pushes him self and he hits thous high notes and I love Axl for always trying to put on a show HE IS FOREVER A ROCK N ROLL LEGEND AXL.W

This song literally scared me the first time I heard it. (Context probably played into that.) For that reason alone, it’s one of my all-time favorites. Looking forward to your thoughts, Ken!

Now I want to know what happened!

    • @matthbva
      @matthbva 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@kentamplin I’d just turned 17 and was driving down a country road in rural Indiana, alone, at 1:00 a.m., listening to a late night rock/metal show out of Chicago, coming down from adrenaline after playing in a HS football game. Reception was a little spotty. Couldn’t see a thing besides what was in my headlights. This song came on-never heard it before-and the first thing I could hear clearly was this otherworldly scream coming out of my speakers like they’d been possessed. It sent shivers down my spine. “HOLY ****! WHAT IS THAT!?” I mean, I had seen horror movies that basically started that way! 🤣
The show must have been playing it from the album or the UK single, because the single wasn’t released in the US until ‘88, which is when it blew up here. But I went out and got the album after hearing the song that first time, and for that year GNR was kind of my secret. Then the US single blew up on radio and I was like, “oh, yeah, those guys are awesome-I’ve been listening to them for a while now. You should hear Paradise City.” 😁

Hi Ken! This was great! I’m curious how many realize that the ‘scream’ in the beginning of ‘Welcome To The Jungle” can also be done by sucking air IN instead of compressing air pushing out?? It can be done by doing it softly with the mic right on your mouth. I’m curious to learn if he actually did it that way?? He’s good at holding his breath back so that makes me think even stronger that he might’ve done it this way (sucking air in). As far as what’s healthier for the voice (air going out, or going in) I don’t know, maybe it doesn’t make a difference? Ken what’s your thought on that? Also, wow! I didn’t know Kayla Reeves was also in TSO! So cool! I knew Gabriela was though. Both great power house voices!! ❤️💗

I saw guns and roses in 2006. 2 times. Once in Tampa and Once in Cleveland. His voice was like 1993 Axl maybe even better. He was in much better shape.
He sounded amazing in 2006 live. Saw them in 1993. I would say he sounded better in 2006. In 1993 his voice still amazing but you could tell at that point he was really over using his voice.

Went to the Guns N Roses concert the night of the infamous limo getting pulled over on the way to the show. Skid Row opened and saved the night by playing for like 3 hours while they tried to get Axl to come on stage. It was almost midnight when Guns N Roses finally took the stage. The concert ended around 2am. Took another 90+ minutes to get out of the parking lot. We got home just in time to change and leave for work. I'm oretty sure everyone in the office got a contact high off us...lol. Thank God we were in our 20s, or we wouldn't have survived that night...lol.

Ken's audience is pretty much geared towards the classic rock/aor style. Your not going to see band's like Metal Church, Savatage, Sanctuary, Agent Steel, etc on this channel. Ken is a pro he knows what he's doing.
