he told the story of the silent & suffering. he brought awareness to those unaware. he influenced & United the people with his voice to create unions to protect those suffering. he was a hobo who walked or jumped a bobcat on a train. he worked the fields. minds and factories.
i wish we had hero's like this and others like him now, we really need someone to step up and use music as a vehicle for change not bashing todays music i just dont understand it im sure it serves some purpose and who am i to attack the direction of my best friend im just glad that people like him existed to at least serve as example of what music can be, bigger then its parts summed and just because its not "current" it still is significant and valid as it was when it was first written

I buried my mother in Skokie, IL last week. The dirt was so cold. She had always taught us children about Woody Guthrie music and played his records. She said before she died...never trust Robert Zimmerman..Bob Dylan...
Younger people: Please listen to Woody. He combined the love of the United States with the love of the people - all of the people - who make up this country.
in EVERY way, they site him even, if you look it up..also his cultural effect was undeniable, as a displaced oakie he influenced people, not just artists everywhere he went. if you look up his son Arlo, he does a good job of explaining why his daddy was the best

Rick Wichita Ks. western slope Co.
Tom Morello brought me here. He was inspired by Woody Guthrie's "This Machine Kills Fascists" guitar, which led him to put slogans on his guitars like "Arm The Homeless."
Hey Hey Woody Guthrie I wrote you song/About a funny old world that's-a-comin' along/Seems sick and it's hungry/It's tired and it's torn/ It looks liiiiiiiiiiiike it's-a-dyin' and it's hardly been born The words of the sage and poet Bob Dylan who used Woody as the bedrock from which he built his entire career. It makes sense that he would choose Guthrie, he spoke for the salt of the earth and spoke with feelings and purposes that are universally felt and experienced. Without Guthrie there is no Dylan. Thank God for them both, eh?
Someone that used to work for me brought this CD into my cafe. It was in the cd rotation. I used to tell the gal to take that stupid CD out. Don’t you know , after a while, I couldn’t stop listening to it. When is sold the business, guess which CD I took with me.....
Woody understood that if I society would remain as a form of organized violence - then he would have to stand up for those who were poor and were denied their civil rights.
In 'this land is your land', when he says 'A sign was painted said: Private Property, But on the back side it didn't say nothing' how do you understand it ? does it mean if you consider the back side as more important, there is no such thing as private property; or does he mean, well on this side it is a private property but then on the other side it is for everyone.
+hjyuihyuihyuihnjyuih I'd say a little of both... If you never looked at the sign from the other side, does the sign mean anything? It's a metaphor, those with power over us only have that power because we believe them when they tell us they have it. I see it as a call for civil disobedience, or at the very least questioning the nature of "authority".
+hjyuihyuihyuihnjyuih Maybe if you are going to call a piece of land your own private place that no one can go, you should give people some reason to respect this, or at least your name?
Drywud: It was discrimination no doubt about it. Can you believe white people discriminating other white people, it is sickness every human being has I guess. Woody and his people suffered a lot at the Dust Bowl in Oklahoma, and migrated to California. Californians were acting superior over these migrants, and looking down on them, they were warning these migrants not to come close to their homes by putting signs on their doors " Private Property" they wanted these migrants to go back to Oklahoma and were treating them as if they were not Americans. Woody Guthrie with his talent is answering to these discriminatory Californians that California belongs to him as well as to them. " This land was made for you and me". I never cared too much about discrimination before, but after seeing these, discrimination is far way behind me. We have to move forward, and ignore it. It is not the color of your skin! It is sickness.
I haven't come to that song yet but if memory serves me right it refers to the towns (I know of 2 of them personally) that had paper mills, making paper from either rags or trees. Driving through those towns made me gag, they smelled so bad. But I think the song was more about working in them.
+Tim G "The Native American Conflict" is still alive and well. There are still starving children, drastically shorter lifespans, and despotic poverty. This land being for you and me is more so a pipe dream now than it's ever been.
Look I'm Hispanic and Native American but fretting over history that's long past doesn't do anybody good, we can learn a lot from these songs. This song is for common folk that love this country. And I think the song is a statement to the people, he's just expressing his love.
+PLASTICDADA II To which song are you referring? I personally can't think of any derogatory phrases. Please reply with which song. My curiosity has got the best of me.
"Was a high wall there that tried to stop me A sign was painted said: Private Property, But on the back side it didn't say nothing - This land was made for you and me." "One bright sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple By the Relief Office I saw my people - As they stood hungry, I stood there wondering if This land was made for you and me."
The best music . A great singer and composer.

The best of them all. Rip.
The Gamblin' Man is rich and the Workin' Man is poor, now I ain't got no home in this World anymore.
Woody Guthrie , he was really a genius singer songwritter
He was the voice of working class America. A blue collar genius.
WE WERE THE WORKING CLASS, NOW WE ARE THE MOB WHO BELIEVE DONALD THE PEOPLES' HERO..
To tell you the truth, Woody was the voice of all Americans and that's what I love about him and his music.

thanks for these gems.
💗🎶 Saludos desde México!!
This album was an expression of discontentedness of the working man with the aristocracy. And it still poetically rings true .

"This Land Is Your Land" should be our National Anthem
As much as the song deserves respect, not really.
Yes because the US needs a socialist anthem.
Well, is America defined by its military or by its folks? Wouldn't be any use for a military without a country full of good folks
Beautiful American hero.
I think Woody guthrie is the father of American folk music and the grandfather of Japanese folk music.(Warashiya Japan)
Bob will be receiving the Nobel while remembering Woody Guthrie and Peter Seeger!
He influenced Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and all the next generations of musicians.
On which way? I can't find any clues.. enlight me please

@ Alexander, There´s only one answer to such guys: don´t feed the troll!
Bob Dylan 1st album he wrote a song about Woody
This land is our land.
Who else could sing "Tipee Ti Yi Yo Get Along Little Dogies", and make you feel like he lived it?
Genius, easy to know why his legacy is feared by some.
Bob Dylan said best I think: "The songs themselves were really beyond category. They had the infinite sweep of humanity in them
my favorite!
If you love Bob Dylan, then Woody is the source.

+KrisFrosz133 Donovan in the sixties paraphrased that with This Machine Kills.
KrisFrosz133 interesting Morello would do so, Guthrie had a racist steak, well many folks did those days...
Arming the mentally ill homeless sounds like a fine idea!
'you will never see an outlaw drive a family from their home.'
I even heard Hank Williams Sr. sing some of his songs
Woody influenced every honest American who loves their country.

going down that road feeling bad isnt the name of the song. the song is I aint gonna be treated this-a way
so, no recordings anywhere of woody singing "Dear Mrs. Roosevelt"?
Re: the song "Do Re Mi." The courts found the California border guards Unconstitutional. They would definitely violate the 14th Amendment.
Pretty good -- but they left out his second and third best songs -- "Oklahoma Hills" and "Reuben James".
Vance Hawkins Also didn't hear "Deportees"
+Vance Hawkins Do you mean 'Plane Wreck at Los Gatos'?
+acapella Patrick -- yup -- but I'm wondering if there are any records that exist of his singing/playing these songs.

yeah no something tells me Woody would be busting some liberal ass with Bernie and standing with the true actual revolutionary socialists lol

paper towns?

WHO DO THEY HIRE TO DO THE SUB TITLES??? REALLY BADDDDD
Nobody, it's a program that deciphers words from the audio....Obviously the technology isn't quite there yet.
Allen Bloomfield Reading along is good entertainment.
Allen Bloomfield Rich folk don't hire people anymore, because a shitty machine can make us all laugh at bad captions for free.
Woody had a very country accent too, and those subtitle programs think they're hearing something entirely different!
the caption sucks.. not original..
That first song is missing 3 verses
"Was a high wall there that tried to stop me
A sign was painted said: Private Property,
But on the back side it didn't say nothing -
This land was made for you and me."
"One bright sunny morning in the shadow of the steeple
By the Relief Office I saw my people -
As they stood hungry, I stood there wondering if
This land was made for you and me."
