- Work is the best route out of poverty - it's a slogan popular with politicians both left and right for the past two decades. But as the country surges towards record numbers of people in work - the number of those in work and in poverty too is also rising.

According to the Institute for Fiscal Studies, 57 per cent of people in poverty live in households where at least one person has a job - up more than twenty per cent since 1995.
The worst feeling is when u work full time and have nothing to show for it, it can be really depressing....

I work 44 hrs really hard manual work and my pay after tax just pays rent council tax and food bills nothing for clothes unless I save :(
Here's the thing, if all these wealthy people keep banging on about how fair and good it all is, then there should be an "income swap" type of system, where for a set period of time they get paid the same as someone struggling, of course minus any costs they must have like mortgage, travel etc. But all the the disposable income gets swapped for a month or so. If it's all so good then they shouldn't complain...should they?

Leonard ...how does that explain the affordable housing shortage in the west country? No dark skinned immigrants in the west country, just regular brits. Immigration can't be blamed for the housing crisis. The housing crisis is the result of turning human habitation in to money making schemes, and that's capitalism pure and simple.

It's the law of supply and demand. Not enough supply? Not enough affordable or social housing or housing for first time buyers built? Then the price of housing and accommodation goes up. The government for a long time has actually prevented local councils from building social housing. Developers have often been 'landbanking' - sitting on land they own just waiting for its value to go up, rather than building on it. The government also relies on people being too despondent to vote, or not registering to vote.
@KEKKER TM Kekker TM. You don't understand economics. Estate agents could not value properties at a price that the market would not bear. There have to be enough buyers who want to, or can, buy at that price, otherwise property would not sell. When demand exceeds supply prices go up. Somewhere to live is a necessity so people will prioritise that in their spending.

Yes .. people think Im so happy to be unemployed and living back home ...6 years of constant criticism have given me an eating and anxiety disorder, and I dont remember getting more than 3 hours sleep. I used to work so many hours rent a bad room in a shared house. But then since 2008 found it harder and harder to get work. Finally in 2018 I was made redundant and found nothing ....my life is going by at 60 and I cant ever see employment again ....Everyone says be positive but after seeing same fake jobs appearing, am coming to end of my tether. Before virus was bad enough, having now had virus feeling worse psychologically...

Childcare fees is a joke. I've worked in the benefits sections in a college and saw so many people on benefits not working being entitled to free childcare, whereas those who are working and on the borderline have to fork out a lot to pay. It's ridiculous. She's absolutely right, sometimes it pays off not to work.
I've never understood why people on benefits get free childcare but working family's have to pay.

Childcare is always going to approximate the annual salary of a working female, that’s the trade you make, if you want to continue your career you have to pay someone the going rate to look after your kids unfortunately, and a lot of people will give up almost all their salary to do that.
Artificially high rent prices are the reason why people are poor. Why aren't more people advocating for rent control and a ban on foreign realestate speculation???

Tax won't stop inflation.... Printing money causes inflation by over saturating the supply of money as a result the value of money drops.

Taxes are the only way to disincentivise home ownership feudalism. Taxes should reduce for workers and small business, and increase for those sitting fat on their money making more money via 'inflation'. any rental income beyond that of one or two houses per family should be taxed at 90% no threshold. so people will not make extra unethical money beyond what they need if not working. rental income from one house is sufficient for living expenses. from two houses, lavish.

This can already be seen now today, they have recently increased regulations on landlord, more specifically, rental income, capital gains tax, higher interest rates for rental mortgages and so on.
What was the result of all of that? higher rents than ever before. stupid policy that looked good to those that do not understand finance, the more money government takes the more people have to charge for products.

in any case i AM such a genius that in my suggestion l clearly left out the first one or two properties. so what will happen is if anyone tries to up the rent by 900% they are competing in a market where similar properties are renting at one tenth the price so again they will not be able to find tenants ... haha so yes thanks for confirming lm a genius :)

London costs are absolutely astronomical. I just did a RightMove search; there are literally no 2-bed rentals under £700, apart from a few "flat shares". I'd be weary of living in that sort of situation with a young child, but I guess it'd do at a pinch. But the point is, she should *not* be struggling to this extent with £1600 a month.
I don't understand why and how people earning under 50k continue to live in London. Outside of London, I earn

House prices and rent are way too high and people wonder why so many people are still living with their parents in their 20s and 30s.
I don't live with anyone but myself, but it also depends on where and how you find a place. I scored a nice bachelor for 700 all inclusive and renovated. It's possible to find affordable places when you possess less.

@@neilshinde8641 part time salary, trust me 700 is not expensive for a flat. I dont live in london, my cousin does and rents a room, just a room in a house with private bathroom for £1000. I rent a flat with all utilities outside london for £700 and thats normal prices here.

I grew up in care and was chucked out at 18 years old, went to the council to ask for a council flat so I could continue going to work and have somewhere to live, and was told to go get somebody pregnant because if I had a baby they would give me accommodation, even tho I was working at a supermarket I couldn't afford a deposit or private rental so ended up on the streets and lost my job! Took me 10 years to get my life back!
And I'm still childless because I was born into the would to parents that didn't want me and raised in care and I didn't want to bring another life into the world to suffer as I have just to tick a box at the council office's!

I was working in a new job then realised during the trial period that I was pregnant, some excuse was made and I was told to leave the place of employment. I couldn't prove discrimination so I went to the Job Centre and I was actually told that I didn't need to work if I was pregnant and I thought what if I want to work or need to to earn money to work for my mental and physical well-being instead of just relying on My husband and his income ? But yes it is the way you get spoken to, have a baby be pregnant get a partner then you can have a flat. It happened with my ex, he had to say look I've a partner who's pregnant and a child with my ex so I need a flat and he got one but wouldn't as a single man if it hadn't been for part time child raising with his ex wife and having a baby with me.

Who can pay for a grave these days - direct cremation is the most people can afford !
Which is why the government put the pensionable age up (used to be 60 for women & 65 for men). They hope you will drop dead before they have to pay you a state pension.
Umm I know, you can work yourself to death , an early death caused by stress related illness !!! Its sad to die just before you receive your state pension esp if you have no private pension or any savings.ppl are so sad, have sad brief lives , working to care for folk then forgotten in a blink of an eye. My husband worked in London for 8 months and had to pay £800 for one bedroom in a five bedroom crappy home with thin walls, located in a poor, shitty neighbourhood. The kind of neighbourhood where he left his bike out on his porch for 5 minutes and returned to have it been stolen, then 3 hours later when taking out the trash, saw the thief sitting on my husband’s bike only meters from where it was stolen, and when my husband yelled at him and ran after him in his slippers, the thief fell of the bike and then ran away instead of using the bike to escape.
He regrets now not spending more, but he wanted to save part of his income. It ended up being the worse few months of his life and the experience made him swear he would never visit the city ever again. We now live in Germany in a beautiful one bedroom flat in a great neighbourhood only a 20 walk from the downtown, and we pay only €400 (about £350) a month. Of course, we are in a small city of only about 300,000 people, but even Berlin’s rents never get to those outrageous prices.
Even in Toronto, Canada, where I’m from, £800 can get you decent bachelor’s apartment in a location near a subway station. And Toronto’s rents are also overpriced, in my opinion, requiring about half of the inhabitants to spend half their income or more on housing, which is one of the ways in which poverty is measured. In London, it must be a high majority of inhabitants who need to spend more than half their income on housing, which is insane.
High levels of working poverty are common in all places where people’s basic needs, like housing and food, are not available at affordable prices. People should only have to spend, at most, 30% of their income on housing. As soon as a majority of people are unavailable to do so the government has got to step in and start creating rent controls. Everyone deserves a home to live in, whether employed or not, but imagine struggling to afford one while working? It’s just a disaster.
Ireland is the same !!! 2 bed is now 2k a month .I’m a working single parent in social care and after paying €500 rent a week , buses , eletricity , prepay phone and bit of food there’s no money left .I’m deaf also but lucky I work in deaf sector in social care but it was love to go cheaper there’s no work for me and live in even more poverty .
It's not true. In Berlin the rent raised that last couple of years dramatically. For a three bedroom we hat to pay 1800 Euro and this was not in Prenzlauer Berg or Mitte or Friedrichshain. The same rent went up when we left 2019 for 2000 Euro for the next tenants. You can't compare a village with a town and south with north. You also can find houses in north England for 300-400 pounds to rent, but it's definitely not a big city or with good public transportation.

There also needs to be action against payday loan companies charging obscene interest rates which push desperate people into further poverty and fuel homelessness.
If one cannot afford to repay a payday loan why take one out.

Taking action against payday companies is not a solution. The government should be helping people such that they don't ever need to go to the payday loan sharks in the first place. People take out payday loans when they've run out options.

The cost of living is an absolute disgrace. I remember when I was 15 earning my £30 a week for working 8 hours over Saturday and Sunday in a cafe' washing the dishes, spending my earnings on whatever I wanted. Now I work 20 hours in a shop and I can't afford to rent anywhere. "Why don't you get a full-time job in a shop," said the man from the job center. I told him if he could find me a full-time job in the area I would be absolutely over the moon, he could not find anything. The government do not understand the fact that people wan't to work and pay our own way but the jobs have to be there and the income has to be there.

I work 50 hours a week and at the end of the month I have about £300 left after paying essentials.you manage to get some money and then bham.something happens.ie car.boiler. drains etc and then your broke again

When an employer is paying low he is using the system to make up your wages in benefits. No one should work full time and still have to claim benefits to get by. You should be paid a living wage. That includes enough for your rent/mortgage, bills, food, clothing and transport and even enough to put some aside for unforseen things.
If your working full-time and still can't make ends meet it just sucks the life out of you.

@@july99887766 the basic things you need to survive. A roof over your head, food enough for you to survive and work, clothing, gas and electricity, transport ect , even a basic holiday to get away from the drudge of life. If your working full time your wage should be able to cover these basic things without having to claim benefits on top. If you still need to claim benefits the job is underpaid and the employer is expecting the system to top you up to enable you to survive. I know and worked for a huge retail chain store that actually had an advisor that would help you to make benefit claims to subsidies the wages they paid.

It's really difficult. I was living in a one bed lovely apartment for 780 per month. Working two jobs my main one was about 1500 per month. I was so stressed sometimes and very very tired from working both jobs and coming home 10.30 at night and waking up 5.30 to commute into the city. So I left the UK went to Greece and was extremely lucky and blessed to be able to work in a gym and from there I moved on to renting my own space in a small gym with plenty of clients. No stress. My apartment is 250 per month with two bedrooms, I'm not rich and never will be but I'm not stressed out and in the verge anymore. I manage my own hours and try to enjoy life a bit more. I come to visit family and that's it. It's not for everyone of course but it was my ticket out. I thought I was gonna die poor and alone, a really bad time in my life so I can understand very much. Now at least I have a social life.
and in Greece the sun shines. It`s just a bonus. Sunshine is a rare gift here in Germany, people work non stop for a survivers wage and barely see sunlight to strengthen their poor health. I wonder why on earth people stay here under such miserable wages and in the dark!!!

I can 100% relate to this, used to get up 4am to start shifts at 6am and get home late. I was earning around the same amount as you mentioned. Hardly had a social life and stress levels high.
Left for Japan in 2011. Never looked back. I worked hard here and it paid off, where I worked hard in the UK only to keep living month to month.
I would never have been able to start my own family if I didn’t leave.
You can buy flats in many parts of the UK for around £50,000. Why are you paying £780/month rent when you have these cheaper and better options.

It is very cruel to say "having children when you can't afford it". Children are not commodity, it is not a car or house or such. It is a human right to have children, only fascists deny people ( group of choice, for instance poor people :)) that right.
Children are not there only for their parents, but for society as well. If there are no children, if only those "who can afford them" have them, the society is going to die out. You are going to be old and needy, naturally, who is going to take care of you? Who is going to keep the economy go on? It is not only cruel, it is shortsighted.
Society has to invest in its children.

It is completely within someone basics human rights to not work to feed someone else's children.
Especially if that person has decided to wait responsibility to a point when they can afford to appropriately do so.
You end up in a situation where responsible people can't have kids because they are paying for those irresponsible parent's to have their 10th kid.
I am for a minimum wage that covers a child or 2. We have this already. That give people the right for a child. But these people have 5+ children.
They are not doing it out of any societal obligations, this isn't post WW2.
They are doing it because of the pleasure it gives them and knowing that someone else will pick up the bill for everything.
No one is going to go around forcing sterilisation, but we have to recognise that we have a limited amount of resource available for charity.
Raising a child to the level we want costs £100,000s if not millions. With health care, food, education etc. Why should 1 family take up 10s of millions of pounds. That is going to have to be taken from someone else.
If a 5th or 6th child, that hasn't been budgeted for, is forced into a smaller home or has less stuff. That isn't societies fault.
I wouldn't mind a kid, but I want one when I am in a very strong financial position. I wouldn't have one expecting everyone else to pay for it.
I suppose that's my morals against yours. I believe its the right thing to take care of yourself and your family.

The decision to have children is a CHOICE. A responsible adult would plan his/her life to see if they can afford having kids BEFORE anything else. Because a responsible adult would care and love their children enough to make sure they have all that they need to survive and have a future.
It is very cruel to BURDEN your kids when you are old and needy. A responsible adult would plan for retirement.
Only a SELFISH person would not even think about their child's predicament and only think about "I have a right to have children, who cares if we all suffer because I didn't plan it financially."

Choosing to be childfree is definitely one of my best decisions in my life.
I don't think I ever realised until now about how lucky I was growing up in the 90s with my nan and grandad being the support for my mum and step every time they ran of money.
Now i have savings and write all my bills down and work out what I'm spending each month to the penny and even write meals for the week and what I'll need in for those meals.
Although being better off as an adult it's like my mind is always saying be careful.
I have been in relatively low paid employment for the majority of my life despite the long and unsociable hours and the hard work I put in. I am now 52 years of age. When the Government decided to introduce the National Minimum wage, not only did it ensure that no-one would earn bellow the stated figure, it also, unfortunately, gave every employer the 'right' not to have to pay a penny over this amount, which, lets be honest, has never been suficient since it was introduced. For many people they will not recieve a pay increase until the Government enforces one. Now, the most worrying trend for many is that when we do get a pay rise, it is insuficient next to the constantly rising rate of inflation meaning many of us are sliding slowly but surely into ever poorer circumstances. A pay rise in this day and age would appear to be nothing more than a myth to try and fool us all. Quite frankly, I despair of the modern predicament so many working people are in. Let us never forget that we are the backbone of our Nation and we all, no matter what we do, deserve a good standard of living, free of financial worry and with a future to look forward to. Is that too much to ask?
I feel for those watching this from another developed country, such as the USA, who work 70+ hours a week and barely get by, with no help whatsoever from the government or any charities. Building communities and keeping an eye on each other, and sharing our love, kindness and wealth is what makes a community strong. This also starts with making basic rights affordable = housing, food and health care.

I live in the USA and people get welfare, ssi pmts..disability. Food stamps etc. one of the main reasons we’re in trouble. Too many free handouts. Our government wants everyone to be dumb downed and independent on the government. Now it’s a free for all at our borders. The USA is a mess and we the people did not vote for this current administration. All lies.
I work 40 hours a week full time but I live in my car because I can’t afford rent it’s ridiculously high

I can't understand how a person whose well off can say what's good for someone who knows what struggle is?!
This has really made me rethink my life, I’m a teenager and live with my parents, we are a middle class family, me and my sibling have our own room but not the biggest house, it’s a 3 bedroom house with 2 bathrooms, a medium sized house, I’m in a family of 4 and we all have nice phones and spend £300 on shopping every week and we don’t live on benefits. I’ve grown up going to public schools but there really good ones, I always thought we were quite poor compared to all my other friends because there houses had 5 bedrooms with BMW’s and stuff like that. But watching these have really really made me grateful for everything I have. Also how much better off my family really has it. Before I found these videos I was just complaining about how my parents can’t afford these mansions and Mercedes but now I am so so so so grateful. If your wishing for a massive house or something, think about it , do you really need it or is it more of a want? :(
Good for you. It should also impress on you the importance of
a. Living within your means
b. Not having babies because it's 'romantic'
c. Saving what you can when you can
d. Making sensible choices about where you live and what jobs you can do
I have a friend who is insanely narcissistic. She gave up an ok job in TV to go travelling in Africa to 'find herself', got back, no work in TV, got a job as a barmaid and lives with her mum rent free. Saved up some money and decided instead of getting her own place she wanted to go travelling again to find herself some more. Is now pushing 50 and still acts like a student. Stay with your parents. Get a part time job and continue studying for a degree. Build your experience during your early 20s whilst staying at home with parents. Save up money, help out with bills every now and then. Once you hit 27-28 you should have a lot of savings. And at that point in life you should decide on your long term ambitions and let them be concrete decisions. Kids are not an option given the current events.

I've had Council Housing single mom not being able to get enough work hours so getting benefits, and having 3 kids to look after would have been 4 but my brother died through neglect. I could have too but let's not go there. I was raised by my grandparents for most of my life birth- 20's that is, until I was kicked out to fend for myself but from age 9-21 I would say living with them full-time, that we were better off financially living in a very small 3 bedroom house, ex Council property bought, with 2 cars in the household, my grandmother a full-time housewife and grandmother and my grandfather working long shifts for Land Rover.
same here but things can change over night say ill health etc. I think always keep some money for a rainy day, have less stuff and if or when things do get difficult, you have some money when i was younger I don't think I appreciated things, I had everything I needed 'including a pony'. One of the biggest poverty contributors in the UK is the high cost of child care. In Germany for example, child care is publicly funded for everyone and you only contribute relative to your income. Someone earning 2000 € per months, will pay around 100 € for child care. This is why single parents are able to work full time.
Wage Subsidies are needed, anyone earning less than £20,000 should be tax exempt, no national insurance, no council tax, nothing.
End zero hours and build Council Houses. The way to incentivise work is to create meaningful jobs with the chance to progress and develop.

The system sucks im currently out of work due to disability and the said thing is im better off. The system doesn't work for a start im not having to spend £200+ a month on fuel i dont need food at work im not having to spend money on maintaining a car. I dont need work uniform like work boots i had to pay for prescriptions or dental. The whole system sucks i feel for people on lower incomes i worked in a supermarket on £11.50 an hour and now i dont have to pay for chikdcare and the lunch for kids at childcare. Ok i dont have alot of money im very lucky to have a council property so my housing isnt too bad. Imagine having a mortgage and two people on say £10 an hour it just isnt possible. It wasnt like this when i was a kid in 90s my dad worked in a factory and mum was at home with me and my sister they had a mortgage a car we never went without on a pretty average wage.
I mean no disrespect when I say this. I used to have this idea in my head of europeans living well with education that far exceeded we americans. I often wondered what was wrong with the US. Stories like this sadden me greatly, but what's worse is realizing how equally hard life is for all of us no matter where in the world we find ourselves.

I worked 3 jobs, one would pay the rent, the second payed bills and transportation, the third was babysitting whenever I had free time for it, and that was my food money. If I didn't babysit, I wouldn't eat. I maybe slept 3 - 5 hours a night. Until I could finally get a job for my qualifications. After being hired for a proper full time job, the first weekend off was like a gigantic luxury.

@@fgrion No, it wasn't 3 full time jobs. One full time, the others only added up. Mon-Fri, 8-4 at a bookstore. School from 5-8pm. Babysitting after 8 most days of the week, usually finishing around midnight, but later on weekends. Then at department stores Saturdays and Sundays, from opening to closing. This is because I didn't have "UK experience". I speak 5 languages, have degrees in Political Sciences, Urbanism and Marketing. At that time I was studying Political Philosophy and Macroeconomics at Birkbeck College. I lived alone, with flatmates, no family to help me out. And volunteered at church on Sundays. Years later I could find a full time job that paid more than the previous 3 jobs combined. Eventually I rented a flat on my own.

Easy to look at it and say poor people are having more kids when in the UK at least, it’s much more likely that having children makes you more vulnerable to poverty. When you have extra mouths to feed, and childcare for a single child costs on average almost as someone on minimum wage makes working full time, it’s not surprising that parents end up destitute.

High cost of housing, healthcare (in the US) and most importantly: childcare. We are a two income family, we both have advanced degrees, we both have jobs just under the national median. Once we pay for student loans, healthcare, childcare, rent for modest housing, and savings for our son's college fund, the vast majority of our income is gone. This is a huge problem which could be solved by reduced housing costs and more affordable childcare.
People are in poverty because they have kids when they can’t afford them. And a lot of the time these people aren’t having just one or two kids, they’re having 3 or 4. It’s absurd.

Me and my boyfriend both have graduate jobs, both with good degrees (science and engineering) from russel group universities. We both work full time , from 9-6 pretty much. We both need cars to travel, and the only flat we can afford is a small flat above a shop which has a lot.of.mold, heating that constantly doesn't work, hot water that we never turn on having a storage heater it costs to much, and we both have very little money at the end of each month. I.dont think it's just working parents, I cuts are effecting a lot of people. For me it's the rising house prices and not so rising salaries

I have no kids but we barely survive as the salaries are horribly low and everything is expensive, after I pay the bills there's barely left for decent food and we too save on the heater, water, electricity, just terrible.

The unique thing about Britain now as opposed to 30 years ago and as opposed to other countries in Europe is the people on under 20 grand a year pay almost nothing in income tax. We sooo take that for granted.
Whenever anyone argues for UC, they always ignore the actual issues being created by the system. People are suffering BECAUSE of UC, not in spite of. It’s not that hard to comprehend
UC keeps you poor because people dont want to lose their eligibility for UC by earning more money.
But at the same time, UC really helps families who are truly struggling. My family has taken UC. And hopefully one day when I graduate I'll have a high enough income to be investing in properties and renting them out.
This is why state schools need further government investment.
Universities shouldn't trap students into studying stupid degrees with no job prospects. Let them charge 9k for sociology, let it be free (or reduced) for STEM.

Having kids with two parents really helps. Two incomes are always better than one. I couldn’t comfortably afford my life by myself, but my husband and I together earn almost $110k/year which makes owning a house quite affordable. Single parenthood is a money killer.

The problem is worldwide, I live in Vancouver Canada , rents are insane. In the late 90s, a friend of mine rented a closet in a house for 300 bucks. He could hung his cloths and sleep inside on the floor. I has 2 roommates myself. I got reno-vected twice in 5 years. It really hard , it seems that the whole planet is privatized and soon we gonna pay for oxygen we breath.

I didn’t become a dad until I was 49. Yes I know, late in life, but I had bought my house in a pleasant neighbourhood and didn’t have any debts. I have one daughter and wouldn’t have any more because I know we would start to struggle a bit financially. I keep credit card use to a minimum. Sometimes we don’t have a holiday if other expenditures like a new boiler take priority. I live within my means. Too many people see holidays, takeaways, cigarettes, booze, and a car as basic human rights. And then wonder why they end up over their heads.

I partly agree with You - the luxuries shouldn´t be taken as something one is automatically entitled to as a basic human right. On the other hand - I strongly feel having children IS basic human right (and in interest of society), and we shouldn´t have to wait till we are almost 50 just to be able to feed them. ...And now somebody will say "why should tax payers pay for you to be able to have kids, why should society care about needs of your family..." But a) IT IS the primary interest of society to bring up new generation that will continue the society and all social politics are basically about that need, and b) WE ARE the tax payers and WE ARE the society.

Theres only so many houses, and only so much land in the UK, it is NOT in interest of society to have kids, especially when you cant afford them. Resources are limited and are already stretched to capacity. Think of our nhs, think of our food supply and think of our housing infrastructure.
Poverty is a state of mind. I grew up poor with 4 brothers, single mother etc. But it is not a disaster, it is just a period of time for the majority of people. The lesson I learnt that poverty is not for ever and life choices is the biggest impact if you stay poor or you slowly move out of poverty.

It becomes difficult when you have to provide for others like children and dependents. Unfortunately many people start families while in a tenuous position to begin with.
If a person, even on low skill work, works like crazy to save £50,000, develops high earning skills, develops the discipline of continuous improvement and continues to watch their expenses that creates a stronger position to start a family.
But there must be some fear to keep a person working hard. Look at the worst off elderly who have run out of money. They have no work, no way to get back into the conventional workforce, no one to look after them, have mobility issues, can't afford the heating bills and have a lack of food. The future can be extremely bleak with no planning and not enough sacrifice.
For inspiration look back at an earlier age for instance during and just after the wars where the country needed to be rebuilt, volunteers were always required (working, developing skills and no pay), people may not have had full employment and to overcome a lack of food the garden was used to grow vegetables. The pleasures like the holiday were forgotten, people cooked for themselves etc. Those hard people of the past probably think the got used to the easy life people of now are weak.

The biggest problem is payment towards high levels of accommodation /rent which chews up mostly from people's salaries, then the cost of living keeps going up; which utility companies are putting the costs on their customers.

A property in London in the 1970's now costs about 30 times as it did, £12000 then now worth £300,000, and wages have not kept up with the money printing craze of the big banks devaluing currency.

She just said she spends 2/3 on her salary on rent; the fact is the UK housing market is a complete scam (especially in London) and prices are artificially high. I am not sure what the solution to this is other than building homes on an industrial scale on the green belt and drastically lowering house prices.
Another option could be a property tax of 1.5% - 2% of a property's value paid per annum (this is done in the US). This would force landlords to not keep their properties empty and would reduce the incentive for people who partake in buy-to-let which is a large driver of the inflated house prices.

The issue of empty houses has been greatly exaggerated naturally there’s a number of homes empty at all times, as people move in and out. Only a few thousand homes are vacant for more than a year.
Ending mass migration might be a more practical solution. We wouldn’t need all these new homes if our population was static.

The housing market is screwed up I agree. We need more building. But even in the current market she is way overspending on rent relative to her income. She can free up a 1/3rd of her income by moving into a cheaper spare room or even a Studio in the outer boroughs of London.
Set rent caps on all properties. Get families with a combined income over 70k out of council flats/housing. Lots of others

None of these people shown are living in poverty. Some also have chosen to live in expensive areas like London, and they’ve chosen to have children. The first woman earns more than me and I work more hours, and if she only has £17/month left over then clearly that’s her fault for bad budgeting.. lol and then she decided not to work after filming; she just wants the government to pay. These single women who have children are wilfully putting themselves in difficult financial situations, especially when they have more than one child; that’s a choice, and clearly only done to get extra benefits.
I was born and raised in a Brazilian favela. Trust me, these people don't know what real poverty is. I had to watch our electricity be constantly cut down because my parents couldn't pay the bills, we would eat badly for days, all the clothes I had was my old cousin's clothes and still we would constantly be robbed and fear for our lives with the shootings in the neighbourhood. Criminals could shoot you to steal a few bucks in your wallet. That's what poverty is, and some people had it even worse.

Corporations are not charities mate, They have shareholders, many of them millions of Western citizens who have invested in their stock as a retirement benefit. The job of McDonalds is not to subsidize bad decisions of regular citizens. The market is about competition and if McDonalds paid 10 pound an hour for a job worth 7 pounds an hour of skill and labour supply in the market, they would be defeated by competitors or at lest lose a lot of income that is not worthwhile.
In fact if you raised the minimum wage for these jobs, you'll just accelerate the rise of automation and artificial intelligence investment to replace all these jobs anyway. These people at minimum wage need to learn a skill, with help of government if applicable or by taking advantage of opportunities around them available.
Maximizing profit is the back bone of modern Western society because without it the rich would have no reason to invest and just park more of that money into tax havens than put it to good use to employ other people to earn a living.
The real problem is the deregulation of the mortgage industry. When mortgages were strictly limited to 3X your annual income, and were hard to get, the cost of housing was stable and realistic.
Add to that the depletion of council house stock and housing and you have a devastating attack on the standard of living for middle to low income people.

As it stands, automation is very expensive, that is why it isn't everywhere. There is an automated McDonalds near me and it still has a ton of people working in it.
Also, total automation will mean the end of capitalism. If human labour is not needed for production, then how is money going to work?
Trading shares is not the same as investment and serves no useful economic function. All it does is shift a companies focus onto shareholder returns and away from the interests of consumers and employees.
If your company makes apple pies, the ongoing pressure to maximise profits to the extent that shareholders find attractive, means that you will need to keep reducing the amount of apple in the apple pie and exert a strong downward pressure on wages while giving less pie to the consumer for more money.
Business that aren't publicly traded don't have that same pressure as they are able to negotiate the relationship between costs, customers and profit for themselves.
The stock market is a belief system that is capable of crushing the value of a profitable company that doesn't follow whatever the current economic fad is.

Why are people so afraid to ask family for help? Our family has always helped each other, mostly financially. It was not always easy, but we helped each other knowing one of us would need that same support sooner or later.
This "being independent" attitude is what is hurting people all over the world. We need to get back to our communities, via families and friends, not government, corporations, non profit groups and the like, that is utter B.S. If someone helps you whether family or friend, feel gratitude and make sure you return the favor when they need help. Like the sign said at the resource centre around 3:15, "we don't heal in isolation, but in community".

It seems that many issues are caused by parents not being able to work as much as they want is the high cost of child care. In Korea, where I live as an expat, childcare centers are subsidized heavily by the government. Is this one solution that could be implemented in Britain? In the USA, the government can garnish the wages of deadbeat dads. Is this not something that happens in the UK? Also, many of these families are actually worse off if the mother and father continue to live together and stay married. These policies have the unintended consequence that family units are no longer desirable....
