Do you teach reading things like this? 1, 2 to 3.. looking at if WR's are open? or are you teaching guys to read the defender that would occupy that space? To me saying going 1, 2, 3 is what guys on television do, where as actually reading defenders in given spaces is what coaches teach. That first clip of the Empty, I'm almost positive they tell him to go Smash vs 1 high and Bow vs 2 high. Thoughts?

I think you kinda have to teach both. Even with a pure progression (1, 2, 3) you still need them to understand the structure and feel where the defenders are at. So that first play for example...if they read it (1) whip, (2) dig, (3) option or (1) option, (2) dig, (3) whip, either way the numbers tell him where to take his eyes but once his eye get there he needs to ID the defenders and feel where the space is so he knows where to put the ball or if he needs to slightly look off for a split second. I assume coaches who only teach progressions (1, 2, 3) without IDing defenders are just very confident that their scheme works. But I also think that hinders learning for the QBs so I'm not a fan.
And maybe they did. Both of those concepts work vs both 1 high and 2 high. Maybe it was also a match-up or situational thing 🤷‍♂I was just talking to my QBs about that yesterday...next level is mastering the offense well enough that you add the match-up & situational tiers on top of the progressions (assuming both concepts work).

@@americanfootballacademy1741 great answer. I agree. To me the 1, 2, 3 thing without looking at defenders normally comes from someone who hasn't actually played the position; it is easy to do in 7v7 with no pass rush, but when you got dudes trying to take your head off in the pocket, it's not too easy to do.

anddddd this is why I stopped playing 😂 Don't want my head taken off. I think it's fine where it's at.

@@americanfootballacademy1741 haha feel you! this is why I'm QB/OC, I make sure OL/RB understand our protection scheme and I don't have to listen to a dude with a day job who gets his coaching info from 30 second IG Reels lmao

@@LivingforaLiving this is exactly why I created my course. Trying to give the day job guys better resources 🤓 IG is great for ideas... Not details 😅
