      The 2nd half of that video should help explain some of the how. You just need to replace the words "H Across" to whatever you want to call it. But that shows how the full play calls work. I also have a full video on naming systems somewhere on the channel. That might also be worth watching. But I can also do a video specifically answering this question!

    Hey Coach, one question: why would you keep #2 on the seam against MOFC? Wouldn't the seam and the dig occupy the same window against Cover 3? I rn have #2 always cross the safeties face. So against MOFO you have the splitter and against MOFC you take the safety out of the equation. Anything you see wrong with my way? Trying to learn. Thanks a lot.

    • @americanfootballacademy1741
      @americanfootballacademy1741 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I don't see a problem with how you're running it. Potential concern would be dragging the hook defender closer to the middle of the field (where we wanna hit the dig). In both versions, you're eliminating the safety as a threat. When it's a seam you're less likely to be able to throw it. Having him cross safeties face turns him into a main possibility though (under safety, splitting the 2 hooks). Many ways to do it... maybe just keep in mind how it might affect the hook defender on the side of the dig when you run it and see if it has a negative impact to throwing the dig. If not, I don't see any reason to change what you're doing

    tysm for your analysis! for the 2024-5 season, I don't know why Reid didn't focus on the tackles, I thought he was the o-line guru. There was so much emphasis on Chiefs getting star WRs (all injured unfortunately), but all Mahomes really needs is a strong o-line, if you give him 3 seconds, he completes almost all passes (unless ball is dropped). Am I, as a noob, missing something that Reid is seeing?

    • @americanfootballacademy1741
      @americanfootballacademy1741 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Unfortunately yeah, seeing part of the picture but missing one key thing!! So, Pro Football Focus is a data company and publishes these studies for Football coaches. One of them talked about the value of having these stud WRs on your team. That will lead to more wins (statistically) than having a better OL. Same reason why RBs have been undervalued in recent years. It's not that they aren't important, but according to PFF, they aren't worth the high draft spot / big money because relatively, other positions are more critical to wins. I'm not even close to being an expert on this...those are just some of the things I've read. But if you look into PFF...those guys are the experts in the field of data science relating to the NFL.

      @@americanfootballacademy1741 Oh! That's very interesting as that sounds counter-intuitive, but I'm assuming that takes into account that the o-line has to be at least average, and then having elite WRs will lead to more wins. I bet if your o-line is awful (where the QB gets sacked every other play) and you have WR 1s, you'll lose more than avg o-line/WRs? thx for the pro football focus reference!

    Great stuff, congrats! Very useful information. One question: 1. Out of the shotgun formation, do you use a tag word for the running back to be on a scpecifc side? or its just implicit on the play call?

    • @americanfootballacademy1741
      @americanfootballacademy1741 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I personally never tag that...I have the rule that they "line up to get the job done". That's one of my most commonly used phrases. I want all of my players to take a bit of responsibility for little things like that. Very rarely do you see a mistake in that. I can't remember the last time we had that problem in a game. I do know a lot of coaches tag the RB side though. The positive of tagging is eliminating tendencies (assuming you have footwork options when the RB is both playside, backside, or in pistol). The downside to me is adding an extra word to every play call. You could use a system where it's line up to get the job done and only rarely will you specifically tag a side, but I'd rather just keep it simple and not use it at all. Negatives outweigh the positives for me (doesn't mean it's right though...just what I do).

    Hey, great video. I have a question, how does a recuver know if they are the x or z or whatever, like if you call trips rt how do they know if they have to go to the left and be the x or being "part" of the trips on the right, and also if they appen to be (in this case on the right) how do they know if they have to be the 1, the 2 or the 3?

    • @americanfootballacademy1741
      @americanfootballacademy1741 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So, you have to have base formations that you operate from. If you start with a 2x2, most teams use...X H QB Y Z... so that would be what most coaches call spread RT. If we said spread left it would look like this...Z Y QB H X... Then you adjust from that base. Now if we want to go Trips RT it would be...X QB H Y Z...And the coach just makes up a rule that "when we're in trips, the H is always the #3". So you basically just need to create your own rules and then apply logic to them with all of the formation tags. If you wanna dive into a crazy rabbit hole of playbook design, I have an entire course that teaches you everything (including this stuff) plus literally every question you likely have on playbooks (+ some you might not have)...all in there. I also give you my entire playbook in the course. Literally giving you the PDFs or the Hudl import key codes. american-football-academy.com/2-day-offensive-playbook There's the link to check it out. Is the stem for the dig always predetermined, or is it decided during the play based on the LB depth? Also, since the dig has to run slower than the vertical route, I imagine the entire concept could be completely thrown out if the vertical gets jammed up.

    • @americanfootballacademy1741

      Good question! I've always had it be predetermined to keep timing similar but I often allow my best wrs to "feel" where they want to cut based on space (getting behind the lbs). I'm generally like that with most things... The less experienced, the more specific I am. The more experienced the player, the more I give them the freedom to just get open / use the tools in the toolbox.

    • @americanfootballacademy1741
      @americanfootballacademy1741 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think the simplest way to envision the difference is the direction of the blockers. Duo is gap scheme. Imagine power... How everyone on the front side is blocking back. Now just remove the puller and you have duo. Inside zone you'll normally see all the OL stepping towards the direction of the run. There's obviously a lot more to it than that, but maybe that helps to clear up the differences. Another great learning method is to draw up the same formation vs 2 or 3 different fronts and then apply the blocking rules for each concept (IZ vs DUO).

    • @americanfootballacademy1741
      @americanfootballacademy1741 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, this can be really effective, but depends on how you handle the OL and the backfield action. Essentially the problems are the corner and the will. Tackle can kick out the corner (needs to work very flat) and let's say you pair that with a pistol formation and have the first steps look like OZ to the trips, then you can influence the will, get him to commit and then the guard or center can get the right leverage on him. Safety is the next problem but you could even leave him unblocked as he'll be down field. I'd only run that vs a 2 high safety look. Hope that helps

I can create a video specifically on that but not sure how soon I'll be able to. If you're looking for immediate answers, that's the fastest place to go. Links are somewhere in the description.

    I know its more common to run IZ to the 1 tech, I’ve always found it easier to the 3. Thoughts?

    • @americanfootballacademy1741
      @americanfootballacademy1741 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think running to the 1 tech works great when you want to get more vertical push (when uncovered you help backside teammate). If you want more lateral flow I can see how running to the 3 tech could be easier to create the cut back using opposite rule...(if uncovered, help playside). Both work though. In college we Auto checked every IZ to the 1 tech. I don't do that in my offense though. I teach the OL to be able to do both.

    This is a great play to have, thanks for the detailed explanation. People hating on this play are not teaching it correctly or calling it in the wrong situation

      Yupp...agreed. It's been my most yards per attempt play for years. I don't call it very often (max 2-3x a game...different variations each time), but usually it hits quite well.

      I'll add that to the list but it will be a while before I'm able to get around to it! If you're looking for immediate answers on this, I'd consider checking out my 21 Day OC course. There's 20x more information on defensive structure / fronts / coverages & the blocking schemes that should be used against them.

    2:45. Packets are running outside zone. Not inside zone. The reads are different and the backside line cuts off. The RB made a terrible read.

    • @americanfootballacademy1741
      @americanfootballacademy1741 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Does look a bit wider. I still wouldn't classify this as an OUTSIDE zone as the aiming point is far to inside for that. Maybe wide zone. General idea remains though. Zone is Zone. Just about aiming points and leverage, but hopefully viewers still get the right idea from it.

      The diagrams are either taken directly from NFL/D1 clips or my 28 years of experience with the sport. Also, the way you approached this question tells me you won't be open to a productive conversation. Appreciate the comment for the algorithm. Have a great day!
