X4: Foundations E04 - Crystal Mining Tutorial, Teleportation and a New Ship!

- Time to get... quite a few more credits by shooting a rock a few times, as well as researching how to teleport, and getting a new... much larger, ship!
So glad you're doing X4. I've already learned a handful of good tips that you thought of that I hadn't.
Few tips:
- You can click on the crystals on the asteroids to target them and see a health bar.
- I saw somewhere (not sure if it was encyclopedia entry or a forum post) that the combat thrusters also increase your strafe speed.
- I hear that the beam weapons on turrets work really well, while the others not so much. Haven't played with them yet myself
- When hitting F2 twice it lets you use the numpad keys to rotate the camera around your ship. You don't need to steer the actual ship. F3 for looking at your target works the same.
There's a tutorial in the game about this, so I assume most people know it already, but you don't have to destroy your satellites to remove them - you can deactivate and pick them back up
Hey grayduster, I just want to let you know, I was hesitant about buying this game, but every episode of your X4 series actually brings me closer to buying the game myself.
I bought it on pre-order and have not been disappointed, it's like an improved version of X3 and only the best parts of X:Rebirth. Only a few bugs, and there's been 2 patches already so they fixed most of the issues, aside from Auto-pilot pathing (yet).

Don't bother yet if you're planning on using a joystick. Some might have gotten it to work, but many players have issues with, amongst other things, the map moving by itself when you have a joystick plugged in. This effectively renders the game unplayable, as the map is so important. I've tried everything I can think of, and have not gotten my Saitek X52 Pro to work properly, even though it has a specific joystick profile in the game...
This is a known bug, and for some reason they haven't fixed it yet even after 3 patches. One would think that proper joystick support would be a priority in a space sim.
I tried playing it with mouse and keyboard, but it's just so boring and un-immersive. Encountered some non-joystick related bugs, but they're minor, so it might be an OK purchase if you're just gonna be using M+K.
You can see your ships being built. You didnt check the large platform below in the middle of the dock which is the only place the ship fits
Loving the X4 videos so far! A couple of tips for you too:
Advanced Satellites are not worth it except for laziness, they have a 75km range while normals have a 30km range but for 100x the price. You're better off just dropping a normal at each station if it comes to it but you can usually set up a couple to cover any area you'd need. My current goal is to have every friendly station with satellite coverage, it's certainly helping my trade bots as they can only trade with stations they have price info for (that few hour window).
You can see what the research does by clicking on the little arrow next to the name. Those module hack research items should save you a lot of credits.
Pay attention to the effective range of weapons as you seem to be a lot like me wanting to do sustained damage rather than burst damage when the enemy comes back in range. Right click the weapon in the ship builder and go to its encyclopedia entry to see the range, the back arrow in the top right corner will take you back to your build. This works to get a lot of the component and ship stats that are missing from the builder window.
Man, please keep the series coming! As an X3 fan, I pre-ordered the game and I'm learning a lot of things from you. Great job!

I've always wanted to get into the X series and I owned and played X3 back in the day and the learning curve was so high and I didn't have the patience and I was just never able to wrap my head around it. Watching your videos has helped me immensely and enabled me to wrap my head around the core concepts of the game with ease. Your calm and concise voice and walkthroughs of the essential elements of the game along with the PHQ missions has helped me in a way that no amount of reading or guides would be able to. I was wondering whether playing as a solo miner in a single slovenly ship, grouching my spacefuel-soaked way around the outer reaches and backwaters of whatever systems I happen to float through, all while listening to the tinny pops and crackles of distant radio static and the background radiation decay of the universe... might be an OK way to play. You sir have answered my question!

Your bridge was at the BACK of the ship. You are looking out over the docking area on the top middle of the ship from the bridge.

couple of nice handy tips for you 1) hold down or press C and jump you get slightly more hight and can make the barriers at the traders and 2) ship transfer if you have items in one ship and want to move them to a 2nd then goto map screen hold shift and left click drag to select both ships then rightclick on your ship option freight transfer

unstable crystal sometimes is needed for quest/mission to open up the black market although it can be buggy to complete it
dont rely on the green ring that is displayed on the map and thinking all stations inside the ring is covered..
for sure its a graphical error but one way to find out is check each station close to the edge of the green border and see if there is a timer.. if it shows a timer you know the coverage is false.. the green circles gets bigger or small at times when i open the map to check so i never trust it.. also i believe the satellite coverage is spherical
You are such an amazingly good TH-camr. I find it strange you don't have more subscribers.
If you pick up unstable crystals you can use the to craft a number of items. As well as supplying them to NPC's for mission rewards. But you must remember to avoid police while you have them with you.

I don't comment often but i wanted to thank you for doing these videos, you clearly do a lot of research before recording and it really shows! I especially appreciate it with this game as it is so new and the UI so undocumented. I have learnt a lot from watching your videos so far. Much better quality than watching people figure it out as they go, so Kudos to you and i hope this series does well. (I also loved your Stationeer videos BTW!)
You asked what to see next, well in the original X series it was all about trading and production, so keep drilling into that, maybe mine some roids, create the factories to process them and its products into final stage items, see how much money you can make.
Or get the baddest ship you can get and go kill stuff (assuming there is something to kill at that level :/)
Also more on the interface would be great (i still cant figure out how to trade items between ships if im controlling one, along with a million other tiny things FML)

Make sure you hire a captain for the one you're controlling, get up out of the seat and see if you can use the map to select your current ship, and give it orders like an npc ship (right clicking on the other ship perhaps). Otherwise, you could dump the stuff overboard for the other ship to pick up, but I hope the above would work!
I discovered a similar thing to the crystals called Loadstones. It's a crafting component. You can get those from ice asteroids that has a red/orange glow on them. Most of the stuff will be ice that drops out when you shoot it but if you are lucky you can get a few loadstones. With this you can craft Spacesuit EMP.
Lodestones seem to float around in asteroid fields too - AI miners don't pick it up and just let it sit, so there's usually a good collection of it just sitting around waiting to be picked up. Same with unstable crystals and spacefly eggs.
I loves your reference to Red Dwarf. Good old Rimmer. I'm learning so much. I just hope I can remember it all :)
I think the only problem I'm running into is that my computer is a massive sack of failure lol I'm upgrading soon and these videos are gonna be a huge help when I get more than a frame every 3 seconds, I enjoy all your videos Sir and can't wait to see how your channel grows

Darn man even though this series is a year old. Thank you I just got the game and this has proven still very accurate. Also I remember you saying in ep. 1 that you don't get games for devs. If you want I can atleast provide you with 2 website that can/will woovit and keymailer. Both 2 sites used by game gldevs for distribution and your sub count should get you almost everything.
23:40 - you missed the free Cerberus Sentinel that you get to cap during this mission, well worth going back and getting it later as its the same ship you just bought!

Thought I was the only one that knew about these crystals, didn't see anyone mining them so far. Nice source of money to get the empire started
Also, your miners/traders can come across abandoned ships - 1.2 million for selling one of those :D
Good commentary , game play and very useful for tips even for old X series player like me. If possible made more detail video about station building, fleet management etc. (X series strong points).
For the curious: You actually can see it being built. The medium ship docks are at the bottom, not on the rims.

You don't even need to ask for docking in small and medium ships. Just fly into the docking area and they will assign a pad to you.
A Red Dwarf reference, awesome. If I hadn't already hit thumbs I would for that.
Best think to know is now that you need to switch mode from the turrents is that you can pause the game every time with the pause taste on the keyboard and give orders to all ships and your turrents, you can switch the turrent modes, when you klick on the icon over the turrents.
The weapons engine uses 10 less shield by bosting than the other, there is a note in the enzeklopedia
Great episode, some spoilers, but I'm ok with that as I'll forget by the time I get around to it. Already played 14 or so hours and not even done the first part of the boron mission... I'm too busy looking around the two sectors I've found... (starting one and one to the right). Keep the tips coming!

You know you couldn't handle having Captain Ace Rimmer, the galaxy's rubber supplies and hair products would become non existant, and there's a chance your onboard computers will fall in love with him and cause you to crash through dimensions :P

You use the numpad after pressing F2 twice to turn the camera around your ship
yeah and you can do same thing with your target by pressing F3 two times.
I believe you can also use shift + middle mouse button pressed down + mouse movement. Something like that has been allowing me spin the cameras around on other other objects. It's the same key combination you can use to freelook around while in your cockpit
you can jump higher when press space for jump and C for croutch so you can jump on your ship too like your beginner ship :)

Has to be a British thing because as soon as I saw "Ace" all I could think was Rimmer !! Or the more colloquial, "Acehole more like!"
For turrets: You need to hire both a captain, and support crew. Otherwise, there's no one to aim the turrets.

a couple more questions Is X4 flight mechanics arcady like World of Warplanes or as complicated as Elite D? Can you fly in 3rd person or only in first person?
It's not complicated, but you can disengage the flight assist to fly sideways and flip around whilst still going forward if you like. I'd say slightly easier than Elite Dangerous (but mainly because I use HOTAS in Elite, and that needs rudder controls)

I have to say, aesthetically, I'm not really digging a lot of the ships and it's SUPER disappointing that there's just a warp zone between key areas of your ship rather than really being able to look around inside of them.
Yeah, the large ships do have a bridge, but it's still connected via teleporter room

Those beam weapons are awful. I went with the chain guns (bolters?) and they're freaking amazing. Shreds shields and armor with ease.
I just bought my starter ship one of the chaingun weapons too and I have to agree, it's amazing. The damage numbers may look low on the stats screen, but it's rate of fire is awesome. And it looks like the triple-barrel gun on a AH-1 Cobra helicopter which is always a plus ;-)
Wish I had the time for this game too. I started it but there wer too many issues setting up controllers.(x52) Small ships roll and yaw were difficult to set up. When I found a medium ship the game changed my control layout for that ship. After 30 minutes of screwing around with it I gave up. Haven't been back since. 4 other space games don't leave me much time. I have played all the other X games. This one is the first to make me quit. Maybe time to look again... if time permits.

could you explain please why sometimes when I buy a trader or miner the "auto trade" or "auto mine" function is grayed out? also in black hole sun IV is a medium ship to capture. the tutorial is bit bugged so would you be able to show how to do it?

I'd like to get the teleportation research started. Where is the floating guy located (which station) and is a mission required?
8:20 Jump then press crouch to jump the fences. Can get some wonky geometry and terrain collision though, I don't think you're supposed to be able to do it but crouch-jump will let you.

When I get the money, we're definitely docking the starter ship to the new medium frigate to a large ship to an XL, just for kicks :)
If you use scan mode it's much easier to spot the crystals btw

By the way, you don't want to use satellites for ALL of your trade information, I've read on the forums some people deploying satellites literally everywhere :S
Just go to the Faction Leader (i.e. Argon leader) and you can pay 10,000,000 credits and get PERMANENT trade deal access for that entire faction for the rest of the game.

How did you go about adding a manager to the space station? I can't find where you did it in your episodes :(
I mention it, but don't explicitly show it. Get yourself a pilot/captain on your crew, fly to the HQ and land, then order your crewmate to work somewhere else - the HQ, and you can choose their role as Manager.
Thanks for that. It's a bit crap you can't just throw someone on a shuttle to get there. Means you have to lose your pilot you've been working on.
4:49 you can directly right-click the nav beacon and don't need to open map for that...; 14:31 - Yes the building ship is visible but on M bays...
Nice tips here, a good way to get started and I think seeding is somewhat random could not find the white crystals, as well as the layout of the asteroid belt, looked a bit different in my game.
Found out you can do a crouch jumps with "C" higher jump to exploore ship more in dock or get over barrier
If you want to jump over small obstacles like railings you have to jump and crouch at the same time
Do u know anything about Digital Seminars. Sound like you train your ppl but I cannot figure out how or what it use for.
At the moment, they're just items to sell, but I suspect they'll get used for training in future
Good vid! However, might I reccomend you index your videos in sections? So this way we can skip over the "spoilers" of missions, but move past them to the part where you're building your station for example.

The one in scan mode? No, but you don't have to be in scan mode. I suspect modders will be along soon to change stuff like that - there's a few mods already out
I've had the same issue with the mission just stopping there. Not sure if it's intended or if it just halts for a while or if it's just a sidequest line for the PHQ and not a major plot story...
I just checked on my game and the map is different for me. The wharf spawned on the other side of the trade lanes and the asteroids are grouped differently.
Each sector is semi-proceedurally generated. They're never the same.
Lol i watched avatar 12 times in a row while mining on 2 chars 1 in a orca and main in hulk, cleaned out 2 systems completed of all ore.Also scored a kill on a loser is hauler fitted to kill hulks , i baited them then jumped in my proteus , was screaming even after i podded him.
never had any problem with noise from the lasers.
Bah, you young 'uns and your hulks and orcas. Back in my day, we mined with iteron mk5's and megathrons!

Hey man, I got a rather odd problem. When I started my X4 I got no story line missions and no research abilities. I’m about 30 hours in the game so I don’t want to restart, so if you could help me find a way to get those abilities back that’d help me out.
I accidentally skipped the first mission, is there a way of getting it back?
I was in a Xenon sector called Atiya's Misfortune III. There these strange asteroids with really Really big red crystals on it. Too bad my explorer had no weapons.
If they were like in the video and orange/red, they're the next to top ones - white being top :D

Hey, after teleportation research the Boron asks you to test it. after your first teleport does the quest continue or is it just done? I did my teleport and got no feedback and I just wanna make sure it's not bugged.
No feedback here either so I think we're okay.
I think it's done for now - I'd expect more to him/the player HQ either in a patch, or upcoming DLC

died like 9 times trying to get to glowing orbs in space, turn out it was a random minefield , on htescanner it said nothing ugh
