Not exactly the numbers of immediate hall of fame status. Aside from Wayne, the Oilers drafted their core. The Pens brought in a bunch of experienced, proven all star scorers so Mario could get a cup, because he wasn't going to win one any other way.

If you encroached his radius he was already 2 or 3 steps ahead psychologically and had the raw talent, athleticism, vision and reach to embarrass you out of your jockstrap nearly 100% of the time. After a while, players wouldn't even try. Easily the most naturally gifted athlete to ever tie them up. Not just a gem in regards to hockey, but all pro sports. One of the all time great one man gangs in the history of all team sports.

Just a shame that Stevens had his face broken against Pilon. Heavily accelerated the drop off for those teams.

Go look at how he did from 2001-2003 and age 35-37. Pretty damn well after being retired for almost 4 years.
The year he came out of retirement, put up 76 points in 43 games at the age of 35. I’d say he did pretty well against bigger goalies.
