Thanks Nick for giving me inspiration to create my own channel and start collecting 5 years ago, I currently have a 9th SS impression from 1944-1945 and a 12th SS Impression for the same time period. I’m in the midst of creating a Cold War East German NVA Impression. Im also going to purchase some items for my 1945 Volkssturm Impression.

Hi Nick. I love your videos. They are very informative and entertaining. You are one of the pushing power for me to expand my collection. Like a month or two ago, I had the exact same problems with that exact same liner (the only difference is mine was size 64 and from a German vendor through ebay). These are hastily and really cheaply made. For sure, they are oversized, because mine didn't fit in the 64 Quist shell. In the last resort, I had to drill out the rear rivets of the outer band, and reduce the outer liner size and re-rivet the band. The chin strap on mine was also fitter in reverse and made of a lower quality leather. All the best from the Uk.

I can completely understand that kind of situations with helmet liners.
Once, when I was restoring a helmet, it happened to me that the liner was a little bit to large, I tried for hours to make it fit but nothing happened.
Luckily I was able to remove the pins on the rear of the liner, tight the liner band, mold it, and do the hole with a drill, but the idea of trowing it away never really left me until the work was completed.

Those split pins are almost identical to the 1920's-40's ones used in the U.S. for holding papers together. The main differences are their legs are longer and they are of brass, not steel. It is rare to find the "washer" for the split pins, as I suspect the people were too lazy to use them and they were thrown out. For punching holes in the metal liner pieces or any light metal up to 16 gauge (U.S.) I use a Whitney Junior metal punch set. ( I use it for electronics and making armor). I know there are Chinese knockoffs made. Great aging job.
