RESTORATION of an Original WW2 British / Canadian MKII Brodie Helmet! Giving this Helmet a new Life!

  • Hello my friends! :)
In this video I will show you the restoration project of an original Canadian WW2 MKII Brodie helmet from 1942!
A couple years ago I bought a bunch or WW2 items for a good price.
All the items came from a wet basement, and this MKII helmet was included.
After having this helmet as a display piece for a couple years, I decided now was the time to bring it back to life!
I hope you enjoy the video!

I remember as a kid in the 1970s the surplus store used to sell the empty unfinished british helmet shells for a dollar, they were black, no liner or straps, just empty shells. American M1 shells were $3.00, German helmets were about $40.00, and italian ones were $15.00. i dont think i saw japanese ones or russian, or any others back then, but, remember, in the 70s, this stuff was really surplus, it wasnt that old, there were millions if em out there, as everybodys dad brought them home from europe after the war... I think my uncle had his jeep cap into the 1980s hanging on a doorknob!

As a young owner of 2 original British ww2 helmets, the Brodie will always be a favourite of mine, one of which is my great grandfathers, it is one the largest sizes but unfortunately due to years or layers of paint and being dropped, the stamps have become long gone, but now it's mine, alongside a Zuckerman Helmet I think they're called

just some advice on using spray paint: instead of shaking it while spraying and almost putting the entire coat in one go, try to go in lines from left to right (or the other way around) on a distance of 20cm. Very light first coat and do like 3 or 4 coats. This will give a way better endresult

I pull the spray nozzles off of empty cans that worked well when I used them. You can put them in a jar of solvent to soak for a while then blow them out with a 'canned air' duster. Use the skinny red straw that comes with the duster. If I run into a can of paint with a nozzle that acts up, I switch nozzles out until one functions the way I want. Nozzles can have different spray patterns, keep a bunch handy. It's saved me grief a few times. Oh, and shaking the can isn't the problem, it's the fit of those nozzles. I have had problems with those myself several times. Pro 🤥 Tip: Some nozzles are stemmed and fit into the paint can, some are stemless and the can's stem fits into the base of the nozzle. Keep a variety of nozzles!

Nice helmet ,good job, although GSW ceased production of all steel combat helmets in early 1942 and for the rest of the war went over to only making mild steel non combat shells for canadian public service organisations like the police, fire, ambulance, civil defence and air raid services, hence the original remnants of the non combat colour before the restoration, but at least its survived.

    • @jonprince3237
      @jonprince3237 ปีที่แล้ว

It would be nice if it really was that simple, though it sort of was for Canadian production. But for British production it depended on which manufacturer made the shell and when. Both shades of green and brown were used concurrently by different companies during the same periods and some manufacturers flitted between green and brown shades depending on availability of green pigment. That's without getting into what the Army prescribed for refinishing helmets, which was khaki-green No.3 for most of the war, until they settled on "paint everything brown" in late 44/early 45, but at lower levels helmets could be repainted on whatever colour and shade they had kicking around.

    Good vid.
Interesting to learn that later helmets were painted 'brown'. Was that for canadian use only, as I've never heard of it before.
I restored a couple of MkII helmets over twenty years ago, and went with the offical 'green' mix which was made up of 1 part lamp black to 1 part yellow ochre, which illogically, makes the green shade as used on the British MkII.
Both helmets were RO stamped for 1940 and 1941.
I used an equal mix Humbrol matt black (Hu33), and Humbrol matt Khaki (Hu26), dabbed on with a sponge for painting, as making your own paint from raw ingredients is a bit of a handful.

Love restoration videos! I also love any video that had to do with Canada in WW2! Unfortunately compared to others, Canada doesn’t receive as much attention as it should. Aside from the Netherlands, who gives us 20,000 flowers annually (since 1945, when they gave us 100,000) as thanks for the liberation and the sheltering of Princess Julianna in Ottawa during WW2!
I have a Canadian helmet stamped “C.L/C. 1942”, which indicates it was manufactured by Canadian Motor Lamp Co. in Windsor, Ontario, who made them from 1940-1943. What I love about Canadian helmets (and any for the matter) is that there are so many different ones to collect. I find the markings on GSW helmets to be interesting especially, I love the different markings for different departments. Like “D.P. & H.” is the Department of Pensions and Health.
Unfortunately I find Canadian helmets to be often way overpriced. No way should anyone ever be selling a lone shell without even a chinstrap for $150. Maybe if it had some flash often not seen, but for a plain C.L/C. shell that’s way too overpriced. Luckily I got my complete helmet with the multicoloured net for cheaper than that, and it comes with a complete, unbroken chinstrap.
Another great video Nick! Keep up the great work!

The surface of the helmet in the early war years were smooth. Later the British and probably the other commenwealth countries textured the surface in the factory. You actually might have scrubbed of the original factory applied texture. I personaly would just brush loose rust of and use a rust convertor. I use the HG brand. I have a jar filled with it for treatment of small object,. Just dip it in and leave it for about 15-20 minuted, or regulary check it. It also can be diluted with water for use with larger objects. The reason your cans are not working propperly might be temperature. The paint and or gas should be room temperature. Than just leave it in a regular warm room for a while that will help the paint. The gas can be warmed up by putting the can in luke warm water for about 10 minutes. Never ever use hot water! Bottoms of cans have known to dent outwards! if the cans had been used before I would advice replacing the nozzle with one that you know that works. If a can is empty and the nozzle worked well until the end keep it as a spare. A nice finishing would be a two tone green and brown , Canadian, helmet net.

How does it take you so long to realize the problem with the cans isn't solved by shaking since it has nothing to do with the content of the can, just the actuator that's broken...? Get a different can
