- Zippo lighter restoration from The Vietnam War Đa krông Post 1973-1974 with soldiers AWESOME hidden massage engraved in to it. Today I restore and repair an awesome lighter from Vietnam with a US Army Airborne Paratrooper Jump Wings Badge attached to is.
This Zippo lighter is a ground found from Đa krông in the Quảng Trị Province in the North Central Coast region of Vietnam. It was sent to me to restore from one of my friends in Asia.

RESTORATION PROCESS
I used a little squeeze of WD40 rust remover to loosen things up. The inner case was stuck in the zippo bottom case, so I used my new custom tool to loosen those two parts from each other. I washed the inner and outer case in soapwater. Some Beautiful hand engraved inscriptions showed up on the lighter. I cleaned the inside lighter case in the sandblaster with low air pressure and I used white virgin aluminum oxide.
I heat treated the Zippo inner case to achieve a beautiful brown matt army color. I added the classic peace sign with my laser engraving machine. I also polished the case and lid to mirror blank. Finally I cleaned the Army Airborne Paratrooper Jump Wings decal in 12% vinegar and gave it a nice antique silver plating. I attached it to the Zippo with modern glue…sorry.

Awesome Restorations sorry but those background sounds r super annoying
As a U.S. veteran, it warms my heart to see you bring these iconic items back to life again. Thank you so very much for doing them. The 3 veteran lighters you did made my eyes water.

@@AwesomeRestorations Bro, tell to us, how you find this lighter ?
the winged parachute is jump school wings indicating that the person has qualified to jump. It is not exclusive to the Army but anyone from any service who completes the school and qualifies to jump can wear them. Da Krong is a place (like Da Nang).
thanks for your comment Dave I really appreciate it :)
My uncle carried a zippo very similar to the one your are restoring - I beleive the symbol/logo signifies the previous owner was Airborne - the most famous being the 82nd - but the 101st is also pretty famous.
As #Dave mentions, it could mean the prev owner carried the Airborne qualification and was part of another unit - all MACV-SOG operators were Airborne qualified, but belonged to Army SpecForces.
My uncle was ForceRecon Marines in Vietnam 67-70 operating in CCN (as far as I can tell)
These are the most calming yet interesting videos, your creativity and humour with what you do really makes these videos unique!
Glad you like them!
So calming it put my daughter to bed lol

Don't get me wrong, I loved the restoration. The only thing I don't like is how you engraved the peace sign on it. I'm not against it or anything I just think that it should be as original as possible
I agree but at least it was on the inside.
Peace is not always the answer. Sometimes fighting is the only way
@TEKNOMOGUL like I said, I'm not against it. I just think that it should be left how it was. I think of it as getting a really old car but but putting modern suspension in it, no one will see it but it doesn't make it all original
Maybe that was for his credit since he is the one who restored it. 😄
@@bradleyholcombe6114 As a Vietnamese, I feel respected by his peace sign. This lighter is evidence of the once brutal violence America put on our country. The war was purely death or survival. Remember Nixon wanted to nuke Hanoi. Yes, fighting was the only way for Vietnamese people at those long, cold, starving years. This peace sign is like a penance, it eases the pain. Thank you Martin
Did anyone see a Person's face in the solution at 4:19
Yes. A man with a beard. Good catch!
Hidden face reveal?!

The emblem that was removed, cleaned, and re-silvered is a U.S. parachutist badge for the 101st and 82nd airborne paratroopers.
thanks for telling me :)
not just 101 or 82nd . they are jump wings
AATW
Who tf dont know that
Silver wings are what someone gets for successfully completing US Army Airborne School at Ft. Benning Georgia. The mark of a paratrooper. Not the mark of a specific unit.
The engraving was a bit odd, but a lot of soldiers displayed it ironically back then. 10/10 message on the case, though.
A lot of soldiers wore peace sign pins there. That’s why Full Metal Jacket included that detail because some had it on the back of their helmets and shit along with lines like “Born To Kill”

Got mine in '02. Airborne!
I applaud the quality of the restoration. I have some mixed emotions about the engraving of the inner case though. This is a significant historic artifact. I would not have done that.
He only asked himself if he could, not if he should. Hipster mentality.
You dont see it, and it doesn't affect the performance or history of the piece. He was just adding his own rendition to an artifact that he spent hours restoring, imagine it as his little signature. I think it was a great addition to the piece!
I don't see a problem with him putting a peace sign on it, it's hidden plus it belongs to him and was his project
I love this guy's work but it's when he does this that reminds me why I put my mechanic above him in terms of restoration skill. My mechanic and other restorationists truly go the extra mile in restoring works, hell my mechanic was even apologetic in not being able to salvage the knife he was trying to restore and the irony ? My mechanic doesn't have restoration in his name but he embraces the true meaning of restoring a piece.
At first I thought the same thing but I don’t believe it’s a US military issue one. I could be wrong but all the issued ones I’ve seen have been engraved and enamelled with the unit/ship/base insignia and not had anything bonded to them.
Perhaps this was made as a gift from a US serviceman to an ARVN one?
I spent time on a ship in the south China sea during Viet Nam 68 tru 70.I came back with 2 zippos with picture of my ship on them. Thank-you for bringing to life those Nam lighters. Hopefully their owners survived. 🙏
Thanks for your comment, I hope they survived too :)
Can we take a moment to appreciate the quote. Knowing military, that's exactly something someone would say 🤣

The vietnam war was not a popular war. The soldier that had that lighter was from the 101st Airborn division. The saying means that when the war ended and when they got off the plane they were being spit on called baby killers and all sorts of names. Sounds like this soldier was tired of it so tell the world to kiss my ass.

love watching ur show sir. My father never smoked…even during his tour in WW11…he fought in the “Battle Of the Bulge” he was in the 82nd Airborne division! He met Eisenhower and Patton. He said u should of seen the food and alcohol 🍺 served.

The emblem you took off its paratroopers wings or a we call them in the military"Airborne Wings". Only soldiers who are jump Qualified can wear those wings. Whoever had the lighter was a U.S Paratrooper or jump qualified.
thanks for telling me this :)
@@AwesomeRestorations there are also two other types of jump wings the US Army and Air Force give. The one from the lighter is the one you get once you complete the basic paratrooper course and 5 jumps, then there’s the senior parachutist badge (which looks just like the one on the lighter but with a star on top) which requires the basic paratrooper course, the jumpmaster course (which is a more advanced course) 30 jumps and you have to have been with an airborne unit for 24 months. Then the Master Parachutist Badge (which is just like the one on the lighter but has a star encircled in a Laurel wreath) requires the basic course, jumpmaster course, 65 jumps and have been with an airborne unit for 36 months. My father and grandfather both had jumpmaster wings

Nice job, however considering the treatment of returning vets by the peace movement of the time, I feel the laser engraved peace symbol is a mistake. Anyhow, very good.
Ok, I was starting to think that I was the only bothered by this.
@@CoyoteKin no. Little bit of a slap in the face. But i understand. And also, not all vets were against the peace movement. Many started at the beginning of the police action thinking they might actually prevent a war. I think many were mistreated, and misunderstood. Nice restoration. I did cringe when he put fire to the emblem. I thought for sure it would melt or distort.
Totally agree! After hearing the stories of my dad's old platoon I'm sure all of them would be perturbed and several would speak out pretty viciously too. They give no sh!ts letting their feelings be known about the war and how they were treated when they finally came home.
This was exactly my thoughts. I've seen other comments "its his", or "its hidden and you don't see it so its fine" and what not. But the historical story involved with that lighter are conflicting with the peace sign and the movement associated. Yes, its his, but I believe it would have been better without.
The peace sign stands by itself, it is not merely a representation of the movement, it actually came before the 68 movement.
Like legit, I'm pretty sure most soldiers fighting in the Vietnam war would have preferred peace themselves.
