These solid state ignition units do not go bad. Something shorted it out and it will only happen again if the problem is not fixed first. Horrible compression right there. I seen people run these at 60 but If You can get her up to 90 then she will have some good power. Now make sure when doing the head bolts that you put them all back in the same place and make sure that both washers are the way they were on the bolts other wise she will bubble and give ya significant loss of compression not to mention getting hot. Also you should never crank that engine over to long like that without no spark plug into the boot on a solid state ignition unit. The other thing is make darn sure the wire going to the SSI unit is in EXCELLENT shape. That wire cannot touch no metal of the engine block while it is in RUN mode or you will instantly blow out the module inside of the unit. Then You will have to dig out the wallet for another 230.00 dollars to replace with another used one. New runs 350.00 if you can find one.
