Unfortunately the Myna's are killing local birds. We have had Hoepoe chicklings thrown out their nests by the Myna's. I can just imagine how great the bird population could have been without them.

Yes, there is a lot of competition for nesting holes. The introduced species can be aggressive and I guess that is why they have survived and thrived here.

Thank you Lynette, very informative. The common myna, for sure you would know, is in australia called 'flying rats'. A destructive bird causing much harm to our indigenous bird life. They survive on any type of food. Are they protected in SA? If so, then we are heading (if not already) for disaster.

Hi, none of the introduced birds to Southern Africa are protected. There are areas where they have tried to eradicate them, like the House Crows in Cape Town but I hear there are still a few around there. I thought flying rats were the feral pigeons or what is now called the Rock Doves. They will feature in the part 2 of this series.

In those days, the harm that introduced species can cause was not really understood. But even today, when people are made aware of problems foreign species can cause, some will thoughtlessly or selfishly introduced or set free something that can upset the balance of nature

Yes, people did not know the impact of introduced species of birds or even plants. They would shudder now if they saw the harm they have caused to upset the indigenous birds and plants.

Nature on the march. Hope the introduced feral birds don't upset the ecosystem. I live in a location on the other side of the world that has large flocks of S. African 'Love birds'. They have been around since the 1960's when a bird breeder here released them into the wild. They have survived and thrived, we now consider them native!!

Unfortunately some are upsetting the ecosystem by evicting hole nesting birds from the nests that they have excavated on their own.

Never seen the myna in the western Cape but up in Johannesburg, they are all over and destructive bird species

I've heard they are in the Western Cape now. I've seen them in East London and Graaff-Reinet and knew it was just a matter of time before they move further south and west. I've also heard they are in PE now too.

Thanks , I have learned something new , it is interesting that the mynah and starling both feed on ticks on domestic animals !

Glad it was helpful! Mynas are closely related to starlings.
