RED-CHESTED CUCKOO male singing his typical 'Piet-my-vrou" song
มุมมอง 660วันที่ผ่านมา
Listen to the loud and monotonous 'Piet-my-vrou' call of a male Red-chested Cuckoo singing from the top of a large tree in my garden. First one I've heard this summer. They parasitize mainly the Cape Robin-chat nests but are also brood parasites to many other birds in the region.

It is always useful to speak many languages - aiming maybe to equal the 11 official languages is SA?
They can mimic many more than 11 bird calls, so they are brilliant at imitating.
Excellent video ! Being a kingfisher enthusiast, I very much appreciate your effort in putting the video together 👍👍😄😄
Glad you enjoyed it! Was a lot of work.
@@lynetterudman please come and join my kingfisher group and share your lovely photos. We have collected 70+ species 😃😃 Kingfisher photography • Kingfisher-ism
I was wondering if you have footage of the "Clapper Lark" or "Hoëveld Klappertjie" "Mirafra Apiata"😊
I've got several recordings and videos on this channel of the two clapper larks, the Cape Clapper Lark and the Eastern Clapper Lark. Will search and post the links here for you.

Wow these videos are incredible❤
Glad you like them!
Thanks for what you are doing. It widens my world. Please add the Afrikaans names as well.
Dikbeklewerik is the Afrikaans name.
Lovely fluting song. (I didn’t know fairies kept flies and even had designated staff to collect them. Glow worms, maybe, but flies?) 🫢
Lol, you are so funny!
Wow you are talented
Thanks, much appreciated.
TH-cam just does not acknowledge my 👍. Thanks for sharing your GEMs with us.
Glad you enjoy them. I enjoy recording the birds and creating these videos for all to watch.
Restart your phone is worth a try.
in namibia we het Yellow Canarys (Serinus Flaviventris) and in northern namibia and north esatern namibia we get Yellow-Eyed Canarys (Serinus Mozambicus) Yellow Canarys are very good singers too I ussualy find them in my garden hovering and catching insects and eating some flowers and seeds in other gardens too also in some open grasslands catching come insects there too theyre also in the cape Lesotho and others also Cape Canarys are there in Lesotho and others. But the Yellow-Fronted Canary looks more like the Yellow-Eyed Canary which makes me confused also its genus is (Serinus Mozambicus) maybe its the same but in different names
Yellow-eyed is the same thing, it is just another name for them.
Are any of these Cuckoo's. As good ALARM CLOCK in early morning as Australian Kookaburra. Was needing good alarm clock. When was working in West Rand. To beat traffic
The Piet my Vrou woke me up at 3.45 and 4.30 am the other morning. Don't know why it had insomnia but I couldn't get back to sleep after that. At 5.00 am it sang loudly in the neighbour's garden for about half an hour.
Is this the mozambique canary?
I think it must be because its Latin name is Crithagra mozambica.
Love it ❤️
Very special little canaries.
An attractive little bird
They are gorgeous.
❤
Wonderful call - I have been looking for a recording of ages - reminds me of my homeland. So nostalgic 😢 Thank you 🙏🏼
Glad you enjoyed it. I was lucky to record both their calls, the song that we all know and the rare 'wok-wok' call that they seldom do.
Good job Rudman
Thanks.
This is November 2024 and I am looking at this little small active warbler. Beautiful
They are very cute little warblers with a loud call. One of my favourites.
You are just amazing, love to be educated in the wonderful world of birds
It's a great pleasure, glad you enjoy my videos, Linda. Lots more to come. Just been on a Karoo trip and have lots of videos still to edit.
One popular guy😂

Or - they are aiming for a great bikini tan? 🤗
Lol
Fascinating. Thank you. ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Lynette, as usual, fascinating. You must spend hours watching... We look forward to further updates on the wood hoopoo family.. and their helpers
Yes I do! I can sit for hours observing interesting bird behaviour.
Thank you Lynette for constantly imparting such wonderful knowledge upon us.
You are so welcome
That's so cute
Neddickys are very sweet little birds.
Fascinating insights into bird behaviour, thank you for these beautifully observed episodes
Glad you like them!
Poor Sombre Greenbul - why that name I wonder?
I've also wondered. His call isn't very sombre, actually it is quite the opposite of sombre. It's cheerful.
We have a few of those who feast on our palm trees. I never realized these huge birds make such a puny sound?
I've always said their squeaky toy call doesn't match their large size. it's really strange. You'd think they should have a deeper call.
@@lynetterudman For sure. It is strange. Are there any small birds that have a really load cry. Here is Eswatini we have some birds that makes a load whoop, whoop sound but it is not an owl. You hear them at night.
The "Piet my vrou" drives us cuckoo here in Eswatini - they are plentiful and sing most of the day here, but especially in the evenings just before sunset. I love birds but my wife has 26 cats so my fascination takes the back seat - no bird feeders or baths for my little friends. So I will subscribe and listen to virtual birds. I suppose it is better than nothing.
Yip, cats and bird feeder and bird baths don't go together at all.
🛐🕊🔥❤
Glad you enjoyed it.
I call them Louis Louis after a certain call of theirs. ❤
It does sound rather like Louis Louis!
Fabulous, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Incredible photography and highly interesting details. We had weavers in our garden in Pretoria, probably 4 or 5 nests in the tree. In the Drakensberg I saw communities of weavers, noisy little busybodies. The variation in nestbuilding is astonishing. I never fail to feel sorry for the male bird who works long and hard to offer a beautiful home, only to have it scorned by a dismissive female. Does she have such high standards, or is she simply bedondered?
Probably bedondered! LOL
Incredible workmanship, and done so quickly.. Busy busy builders..
They can build the basic shape in a day or two. Takes them a while to add layers though. Imagine how many strips of grass each nest takes!
Fascinating, thank you... Amazing photography
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you Lynette. I hear the Gray headed bush shrike a lot, but has never seen the culprit
They are very sneaky and usually hide in the leaves.
Goeie werk! Baie dankie! 🌸🌸
'n groot plesier!
Incredible weaving skills. A marvel to watch
I never get tired of watching weavers construct their nests. How do they know how to shape their nests when they make their first nest? Instinct is so interesting.
@lynetterudman absolutely. A skill that most humans don't possess
Can't miss them in Southern Namibia. Love hearing them at my home.
I think you get the Southern Masked Weaver in Namibia? And in the Caprivi area, you get the Village Weaver?
They are beautiful
I agree, they are all beautiful birds with beautiful calls.
🎉🎉
Guys - we got a puncture. Anyone help with the pumping?
LOL!
Used to love listening to this bird on the ranch we lived on in Rhodesia..
It is still one of my favourite bird calls of our bush.
