I am an American. I just bought a '23 Kia Niro hybrid [hev].
I drove a prius c for 10 years and had 250k miles on it. I averaged around 45-47 mpg. Lower in winter, higher a few times on others.
I needed $3200 of repair work on it. That was my breaking point.
As I looked for cars the last year, it was hard to find a hatchback hybrid in stock, gonna be in stock, or planned to be made.
Or everything was AWD which I did not want.
    - I drive too many miles each day to worry about replacing a flat tire and the awd lowers mpg.
I placed a $500 deposit on a 24 Toyota Corolla hybrid sedan and it was going to cost me $28k before taxes. I would have gotten around 47 mpg if i were lucky.
The back seat was going to be cramped with the boring sedan look.
All but one of my vehicles have been hatchbacks in 35 years of driving.
I discovered the Kia Niro on a Thursday night as I researched compact hatchbacks.
-Kia had not been on my radar because of all the autothefts of older models.
Seeing 52/53 estimated mpg, the back seat leg room, the back wiper, and the open front area made me immediately want to test drive it.
I test drove the Kia on both a Friday and Saturday and signed on the dotted line by 2 pm Saturday. I Picked it up on a Monday when my insurance company and the dmv was finally open.
By paying $2k more, I feel as if I didn't settle. I feel as if I doubled my comfort level. I have the feel of an sub compact suv with an awesome 50-52 mpg potential.
I commute 110 miles each day and high mpg is top of my musts.
I try to get 50-53 mpg and putting on cruise control at 65 mph helps me achieve that. If I can get 49-55 mpg for most days, discounting very cold/windy days, I will be happy.
If I got the Corolla, I would have felt like I was "settling".
Toyota offers a Corolla Cross Hybrid which was nice looking, but the cost was more than the Niro by at least $2000 if I wanted the back window wiper option. And the back row passengers' knees would have been hitting the front seat backs. I believe the Canadian version of the Corolla Cross Hybrid comes in front wheel drive and I probably would have ended my search there 2 months ago if it were offered in the US.
I think the Niro is a car like you guys said...gonna give me a reliable, comfortable ride wuth great mpg.
    Exactly what I want.
The Kia Niro is allowing me to put my feet...and my butt ....in a crossover/sub compact suv vehicle.
The reality is that I could not truly afford a full size suv since those would really be $4000-6000 more and also getting me less mpg.
Getting 10-15 less mpg is huge when driving 30k miles a year.
I'd be eating Ramen noodles and cereal every meal.
My kia was supposed to be $31, 200. I got it for $30k. It was the color that I wanted, the model that I wanted, and it was in stock, with only me being the person to test drive it.
    I am a happy driver.
I will be buying wipes to keep in my car to wipe the inside down a couple of times a week.

Just want to say how much we appreciate insightful comments like yours! We only get to experience these vehicles for a week at a time before swapping into the next one and we can only imagine so many different buying situations, so having kind people like you share their own experiences is invaluable for us to check our reviews against! Glad you're enjoying your Niro, there is a lot to like here.

I have owned two Niros. I thought your review was pretty accurate. Not a lot of excitement with the Niro (other than passing a lot of gas stations) , but it is a very comfortable,
practical urban cruiser. I'd say the Niro is a highly underrated, very desirable city / urban car. It does reasonably well on the highway also.
I now have a 23 Niro HEV which replaced my 2019 Niro PHEV. The PHEV was perfect for my daily driving which amounted to 20-30 miles / day. Over 14,000 miles I averaged 150 MPG. It's only flaw was that for some reason peculiar to my wife she found it a bit hard to get in & out of the driver's seat.
We test drove the 2nd generation Niro HEV (2023) and she found that the egress comfort was significantly better. I found that the 23 over all comfort level ride & noise moderately improved and the interior space moderately larger, especially the back seat & cargo area (we use both these areas of the car often).
I would have purchase another PHEV if the cost differential for the features we wanted wasn't > $10,000 USD. So we got the 23 Hybrid SX model. It is improved in all regards over 1st gen except for the auto windshield wipers & a more complex infotainment / HVAC interface.
I don't really care for all the piano black all that much, but it hasn't been a problem despite carting a 8 yr old grandchild around in the back 5 days a week.

@@danhall3450 Thanks for your comment. I have watched quite a few youtube videos on the 23 Kia Niro Hybrid. Some have been about the Canadian and European models/offerings so some are not exact to the American models/offerings.
Ex. European used 2, 3, 4 rather than EX, SL, etc or whatever ours are. One person had a lengthy tutorial about the steering wheel and infotainment stuff. For some models, supposedly you can have the seat lower for one to enter and get in the seat. Then it goes back to the specific driver settings.
My bff tells me that she still hasn't played around with her 2019 Honda Civic. It's only been 2 months for me.
When you talk about the difficulty of your wife getting into a car, I get it! That civic that I mentiined, my bff's, it takes so much effort for me to get in and out of it. The same for her 86 year old mom. My Prius C was low, but not that difficult to get into. My bff is gonna get a small suv because she doesn't want to deal with that lower seat problem/effort.
As I watch the youtube reviews or read others in online print, I keep reflecting on how little it bothets me about that basic drive for my Niro.
      1. I prefer trying to get to 50 mpg rather than zipping around corners.
      2. My commute it basically 4 roads, one being the interstate for 40 miles. Pretty straight roads with only on minor hill.
It's not like I am tackling a racetrack or winding backroads.
I've done the drive for 23 years and by now it is mostly rote. And the Niro is perfrct for that.
It keeps me in check [not speeding, warning me abput nearby drivers, speed limits, stop signs] and offers me some creature comforts to that daily commuting experience.
      A win win for me.
I don't regret my purchase since there really was no other car that was checking the boxes.

Great review. Purchased ours for $34,500 with taxes and freight included (full final price) here in the Vermont (the EX trim PHEV). So far it has been a very comfy and efficient commuter/ family car. I wish the 1.6 liter engine didn't have to rev so high between shifting with the 6 speed dual clutch. Other than that, it has been a great car for the last 6000 miles and 4 months of use....I have a Makita vacuum and microfiber cloth in the consul and on board :) The piano black glossy thing is something I have come to enjoy wiping down once or twice a week. I think the interior is a smart design. Thanks

Agreed, the price needed a little end of year haggling but it's a very nice commuter car. The piano black - finger smudges are not any worse than any whole touch screen display after use. 😉 If it's an adult driven car were not seeing too much of an issue and that microfiber buffer cloth means we are paying more attention to ongoing maintenance. 😂

It's a fair argument that you could get a Sportage or Santa Fe hybrid for not too much more, with the tradeoff being somewhat less fuel economy. It's not really fair to compare a RAV4 Hybrid's mythical MSRP in 2023 (or a Prius, which is maybe more the direct comparison), because it's gonna be a +$7,000 market adjustment and a better part of a year waiting list at every Toyota dealer out there.

    • @GCCarsCA
      @GCCarsCA  ปีที่แล้ว +1

We try to go by MSRP, but unfortunately you are correct. Getting a RAV4 Hybrid is more than difficult.

Thank you for the review guys! As a recent convert from an Alien II 2014 SOUL ! I'm a mostly satisfied owner of a 2024 Cityscape Green SX Touring HEV. I'll add my 2¢ here if that's alright. 😉
Yep, line up every small to mid range "hatchback-type" car from Kia and (with the exception of the aforementioned playfully unique Soul) it's just minor variations on a Zzzzz theme, which is true of most car brands, unless you are going for the big bucks, boxy, fuel guzzling, trailer-towing variations of actual utility, covered-pickup truck-type SUVs. Very little makes any of them stand out visually, like the Soul does. (Damn shame that's not available in a fully loaded hybrid IMHO) But you are correct that the Niro front end is slick and EV looking without limiting the driver to purchasing questionably generated electricity in order to go anywhere. IF you go for the fully loaded SX TOURING MODEL, the black aeroblade pillar is another design point in favor of helping this car stand out from it's lower level companions and so many "blah" competitors, as otherwise it pretty much blends in with the rest.
I have unexpectedly received a steady stream of questions and compliments from complete strangers in parking lots since purchasing my Niro SX TOURING HEV a month ago. Folks seem to like the front end, weird cityscape green color, definitely the black accent pillar and several wondered if it was full EV because of the combo of those snazzy styling bits.
YES, the fully loaded Niro SX Touring HEV is
    ✓overpriced
    ✓too much 🎹 black
    AND: PET PEEVE ALERT
✓Where the heck is the storage space??? (There is no overhead compartment for sunglasses, door space for sun block, bug spray, backup double wall stainless refillable travel mugs etc. Unless you want clutter in the weird open center storage tray by the cup holders, there's nowhere for small items like hand sanitizers, lotions, lip balm, mints etc. except all over the charging pad, thereby blocking the ability to use that. The "glove compartment" is barely big enough for the vehicle manuals and documents and the tiny compartment under the uselessly short, poorly placed center console arm rests is laughable. Not to mention that ONLY eco-tragic disposable plastic water bottles fit in any of the 4 door storage bins! We like to do our part and travel with water and coffee in commonly sized non spill thermal containers. With only 2 cup holders each in front and in the back pull-down armrest, there is no place to put the other half of our drinks, which previously lived in our door side bin bottle holders, next to the sanitizer, sun block and bug spray...
    * But... In the end, at the SXTouring level this little car is
Smooth, quiet, efficient, surprisingly spacious and comfortable, well appointed with premium sound, attractive fit and finish, all the current safety and comfort features and did I mention, great FUEL ECONOMY (savings) you'll enjoy over the larger Sportage or Tucson (plus it's better looking). 😉👍

On the subject of Piano Black, I would like to state 1. it is very scratch resistant 2. the detectability of dust and fingerprints makes it easier to find the places that need cleaning. Vehicles with matte and gray surfaces are usually INVISIBLY dirty!

    • @GCCarsCA
      @GCCarsCA  ปีที่แล้ว

Every car we've been in with piano black, including this Kia Niro, already had the panels scratched even at low mileage. And regarding the invisible dirt, sometimes it's nice to not know that your passenger has sneezed while you were filling up gas. But at the end of the day all this is subjective, so if you like piano black that's great!

I'd have to say that the Niro gets the mpg of the Camry, but the futures almost of a Sportage'. For around town, and occasional long road trips, it really does make sense. Especially for the older/retired crowd.

I love the technology and looks of this redesigned Niro and let me tell you it can keep up with most cars with the electric motor and 195 lb/ft of torque. I love utitlizing the paddles for regen braking and it keeps me engaged as I average 58 mpgs per tankful here in the USA. Tell us how you like the NIro once you get it.

@@raybanez642 I'm loving it! In Canada we have a heads up display but it doesn't work with polarized sunglasses 😎. Wish it was the plastic type like on my Soul. The Harmon Kardon is a massive failure compared to the HK that was in my Soul! I just tinted the front windows look so much better and I also tinted the sunroof and that is so much better as well my eyes are very sensitive to light now I can actually keep it open!!!! I don't know why it keeps constantly turning off the regenerative braking when you use the speed control and it doesn't go back to what u set. So it seems to unlock all my doors when I just get close to my car I need to figure out how to turn that off. I only want the driver's door unlocked not all of them. Other than that it's a fantastic car great on gas and it's cute! Decided to get the 10-year 200,000 km warranty so fingers crossed and keep this one for 10 years!!!!!!

If one were to lease a Niro plug in hybrid - and ran it totally on electricity (my cost from my utility is $ 0.18 per kwh). Hence the total cost would be $300 per year for electricity. If one ran the Niro on gasoline rating only of 50 mpg with gasoline at $3.00 per gallon the total cost would be would be $600 per year (10,000 miles). One could scale this up for the number of miles they expect to drive and adjust the costs accordingly. Hence for 10,000 miles per year with a potential max savings of $300 or $25 per month is a Plug In Hybrid make financial sense ? How many miles per year does one have to drive to justify paying extra for the plug-in feature ? What you are paying for is increased HP over Hybrid. Concur with reviewers - price does not justify either Hybrid or Plug In.

In these days of Western civilization declining, we might have to look forward to times when the grid is down or gas stations are closed. The PHEV provides some protection against either one of those things happening.

Here's an honest consumer review. I'm not a fan of Kia's Niro Hybrid SUV, or its pricing. I was given one as a loaner while the dealership tries to figure out why my 2-week-old Seltos running lights are dim and the inside of the covers are cloudy.
Niro's seats are comfy, but it rides rough. You can feel every bump in the road, and it looks and feels boring and cheap inside and out. It reminds me of an old-fashioned station wagon because it's so low to the ground.
I prefer my Seltos, but Kia needs to lose the high gloss, black piano trims on all their models. It's beyond bad. I even went up a model to avoid most of it, but what's there always looks dusty, and fingerprinted. There's already light scratches on mine with less than 200 miles on it. Trust me, you will hate it.
