Living in Atlanta, I have run into Amy and Emily on many occasions. I am always at a loss of what to say. There are so many of us that were raised up in the LGBTQ community and the Indigo Girls concerts were so much more than a concert. It was our community. We listened to their interviews and found inspiration in the work they were doing in the community . The Indigo Girls were a lifeline to my wife who was a baby butch in North Dakota. She would drive the highways listening to their music and figuring herself out. The last time I ran into Amy it was on an airport bus going to my car in Park N Ride. I saw it as almost my duty to protect the privacy of Amy and Emily so I never went up to them and said anything. But this time.. we were on the bus together for a long time. I leaned over when it was just she and I, I thanked her for being a lifeline for my wife during a time when she felt very much like the only lesbian in North Dakota. Months later, I realized there was NOTHING i could say that would adequately capture everything i felt. Amy and Emily are just people after all. I just hope the community has sustained them in dark times, as it has done for so many of us.
Wow. Subway. Wow. What a tribute to her beloved friend. What a song. Amy's songwriting just keeps evolving. She ranks right up there with Isbull and Prine.
