  • May 27, 2016 by FELIX CONTRERAS • Carrie Rodriguez has been many things: a classically trained violinist turned American fiddler, a duet partner to veteran songwriter Chip Taylor, a successful and popular solo artist in her own right. On occasion, those roles have allowed her Mexican-American roots to bubble to the surface - perhaps in a line sung in Spanish, or through a reference to a classic mariachi song.
    On her new album Lola, Rodriguez's bi-cultural life blossoms into a spectacular collection of stories and songs, several of which she included in this Tiny Desk concert with guitarist Luke Jacobs.
    Lola is available now:
    iTunes: itunes.apple.c...
    Amazon: www.amazon.com/...
    Set List:
    "I Dreamed I Was Lola Beltrán"
    "Llano Estacado'"
    "Noche De Ronda"
    Credits:
    Producers: Felix Contreras, Niki Walker; Audio Engineer: Josh Rogosin; Videographers: Niki Walker, Kara Frame; Production Assistant: Jackson Sinnenberg; Photo: Brandon Chew/NPR.

    What really makes me mad is that many of today's producers and artists record music in professional studios over weeks and weeks with multiple mixings and come up with material that sounds worse than what two people do in a makeshift studio in an office space recorded live with no remixing or editing. How is that possible?

      Because commercialization is fake. This is authentic. Authentic is easy. Much harder to fake it.

      awe....no not really....he seems very aware of her limitations actually.....she's got about 85% of it together with the vocals.... lazy with skipping over the little bits between the hooks in each line.......she is still young......hopefully the ego will step aside and awareness of the vocal short comings will be addressed and limitations on instruments as well will induce her to put in more practice time. That said I still enjoyed show and she has the formula she has works well bridging the languages.

    Such a talented and beautiful woman is Carrie! When Jeff Bridges was touring decade ago, he wouldn't present her as a singer for a solo: it would have shown what a bad singer he was! He had the recognized name: SHE has the talent!

    What's the name of the instrument she's holding in the first song? It only has 4 strings, so I don't think I could call it a guitar. It seems too high pitched to call it an acoustic bass.

    • @Themonist
      @Themonist 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's a tenor guitar, very rare indeed.

    • @eerbrev
      @eerbrev 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a Tenor guitar. It's tuned at the same pitch as a Viola - a1d1gc, tuned in 5ths. Neko Case uses one too relatively often.
      There's a lot of good reasons for her to use one - She already plays violin (and probably viola) so she doesn't have to relearn any fingerings for chords, and she seems to be a relatively small-handed person so the shortened scale length is probably an advantage too.
      It doesn't help they sound damn cool too. I have a guitar tuned up like a cello right now - adGC (an octave lower than viola), and it's a lot of fun.

    This channel needs a better sound system, or the artists need to bring a better system with them. Mics needs a bit of echo/reverb in them to not sound so flat
