  • My Craftsman pocket size key chain garage door opener remote quit working. In this video I take it apart, diagnose the problem, and repair the remote. I also show how you can check if the remote is transmitting using a software defined radio dongle.

I also upgrade the capacitor across the supply, as often there is either none or a mystery ceramic there for decoupling. Add a small tantalum cap, any value over 10uF and higher than the battery voltage by a good bit, I use 10uF 20V ones from old PCB scrap boards for 12V remotes, you can use a 6V one there. I often also use a soldering iron to tack the case halves together. Random operation is always either failed switches or moisture in the unit.
BTW those cases are available on fleabay, look for the empty remote fob case.

Wow, I used your technique and fixed my remote in 3 minutes; bad solder joint obvious under the high power illuminated magnified loupe

Glad my video helped. The solder joint that is the problem most often is the one where the battery contact on the back half has a pointy part that makes contact with the pad on the circuit board. The point digs into the solder on that pad and eventually it doesn't make reliable contact. If you just re-flow the pad with a new bump of solder it works again. Just a tip for other viewers...

thank carl, very good. I have a problem with my craftsman remote the larger one with three buttons.#18791 I have two of them one of them stopped working, I changed battery and I reprogramed it, but it only. works the door if I hold it right beside the door opener mechanism(motor housing). It seems to have a very short range? it worked for years before just fine... On the circuit board there is a blue coloured round device its marked "C3" on the circuit board, I tried adjusting the screw on the others ide of the board, I thought this might be the frequency adjuster? any help would be appreciated.

I do think the blue colored component adjusts the frequency, but I don't think you'll fix the problem by adjusting it. I'd get a bright light and a magnifying glass and look for cracked solder joints and re-solder any you find. If that doesn't fix it, your best bet is to do what I did years ago. Buy a new remote, but not one of these. I quit using these Craftsman remotes and bought a cheap one on eBay. Just search for keychain garage door remote. Make sure you check the color of the learn button on your motor unit and buy a remote that says it can program to an opener with the matching learn button color. I don't really want to post a link to one here because in a month the link will end up bad anyway. The one I got has a chrome finish around the sides, a back face and back, and one round button in the middle, and cost me about $12 online. It is smaller, better built, and has worked great for a long time. The disadvantage is that it has only one button, but I didn't need more than one. If you do need to open more than one door there are versions with more than one button.

@@cdsmith thanks I got it working again, solder point were battery makes contact was worn out. Still can't figure out what that adjusting screw is for???

Humm all that and proof is in the pudding and you did not show it even working on the grage door ?

Sorry, I forgot that on the Internet its "Pictures or it didn't happen." :)
I had to fix this thing again recently. This time one of the switches on the circuit board wore out. The snap dome in the switch wouldn't pop back up. I had another remote that quit working years ago so I took a switch out of it to replace the bad switch in this one. Thanks for watching my video.

Can't get the garage opener to delete my old remotes, my neighbors are opening and closing my garage door when they are using their remote despite of never been programed with my unit... What a fucking piece of shit.

Strange. I've heard of neighbors opening doors with the old style openers that have little switches inside to set the code. If you end up by chance to have the same code set on the switches it can do that. But I've not heard of that on modern openers that use rolling codes and a learn button on the opener unit. Anyway, on most door openers all you should have to do to clear all the remotes is hold the learn button on the back of the opener unit until the learn light comes on and then goes out again. Then you have to re-learn the remotes you do want to work. When I used to use a remote like the one in this video I would sometimes find my garage door open but it wasn't my neighbors. I think I was accidentally bumping the button when the remote was in my pocket. I quit using this type of remote a couple years ago when I found a much better one online somewhere, not made by Craftsman. It's smaller, much less expensive, is built much better, and the button is a bit harder to press and is a bit recessed, so I don't seem to bump it by accident anymore.

@@cdsmith i can not get the old stored remotes co clear/delete them. No matter how long i keep pushed on that "learn button" I've even had it taped down for more than 30 minutes, it doesn't clear the old remotes... Light goes on for how long i keep the button pushed, if i keep it longer than a minute, it stays on even after releasing the button...

@@RomanTrollanski Try this - Press the learn button until the light comes on, release the button, then give it a quick single press. I read online that will clear learned remotes from some openers that the long press won't clear.

@@cdsmith thanks, I've tried... Still doesn't earse the remotes, when I push the learn button, the light goes on and stays on... Even after releasing the button, would still stay on until either i push the remote button, or wait about up to a whole minute to go off.
But pushing down hold a few seconds, then followed by another push on the learn button did not clear the old remotes... I had to close the garage and unplug it so my neighbors won't mess with my door...
Just ordered a $400 new one, hopefully I'll install it myself so I save there a little bit of money.
Thanks for the time you took to write me a reply.
