    Went to two different garages. One told me the sounds the engine was making was from running it low on oil. The other said sell it ASAP because the motor was junk. So I watched your video and your honda odyssey sounded like mine. So I took it into my Honda dealer. Got the belt and the belt tensioner replaced and it sounds like a new van again. I very much appreciate your videos. Saved me a lot of time and money. Thank you

    Great video. My 07 Accord is doing the exact same thing. My mechanic of the last 30 years was thinking my engine is gone. I told him about this and he's going to take the cover off and see what he finds. We shall see. Thanks.
    UPDATE*******
    This was exactly what the problem was. Thanks for posting very much. 👍

    Thank you for your Video! My friend who is a mechanic told me I needed a new engine because the sound was already a bad engine/valves. I reasearched the issue and found your video. The sound of a bad timing belt tentionair was similar to my 2013 Odyssey. I myself bought the timming belt tentionair kit and had my mechanic/friend replace all parts. When he was working on my car he was still telling me where to look for engines because the work he was doing on replacing the tentionair was not going to work. When all was set and done, my friend told me to start the car. THE SOUND WENT AWAY. MY VAN DID NO LONGER SOUNDED LIKE A MOTORCYCLE. My machanic friend apologized about 100 times for giving me a bad diagnostic. Thank you again for your video THE CAR DOCTOR. YOU SAVE ME A LOT OF MONEY.

    I purchased a genuine Honda OEM Made in Japan tensioner as a spare for my 2010 Pilot. It's astonishing how many repair facilities will try to upsell the repairs by telling a potential customer their engine is shot when it isn't. Thanks for the great info!

    Yep, my wife’s 06 Ody tensioner went bad after a month replacing the timing belt. Glad I kept the original Honda tensioner. I was sweating bullets thinking the engine was shot! This was my first timing belt replacement on a V6. Replaced the tensioner with no further noise or issues 👍

  • @johnaclark1
    @johnaclark1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The first TB job I did on my own 08 Ody I used genuine Honda parts. This was at 100K, and back in 2013. at 185K the Honda replacement tensioner started to make this noise, though nowhere near what your van sounded like. I had to go in about 25K early and do the TB/WP job. I now use the Aisin kit when I do these jobs for other people. The bearings are OE Koyo bearings, the OE water pump is actually made by Aisin, and the Aisin kit belt is a Mitsuboshi, which is what the original Honda belt was. It's pretty much an OE kit for a fraction of the cost. Aisin is the way to go on these cars.

    This is a great video, Tim, with logical procedure and process. As soon as I heard one of these, the tensioner was my first thought, the sound and tempo is pretty unmistakable, even on different car lines, and number of cylinders, once you have heard it, But I'm not afraid to see what others have found for solutions
    This is usually caused by being in a hurry to reinstall a good hydraulic tensioner, and compressing it too fast, too much pressure, in the wrong position, or dirt on the tensioner shaft Kudos and God Bless!

Bought it with 26k miles on her and haven't changed much other than the oil, religiously. I'm going to contact the Honda dealership tomorrow for the parts. After talking to a friend Honda technician, the after market water pumps aren't a perfect match and tend to leak, sometimes. Either way, I'd charge someone, considering it takes about 4 hours, 500bux including tax. Parts not included. I'll ask the dealership what they charge. It'll be comical at the least. Hahahaha

It also says check parking sensor system but *knock on wood* never has given us a check engine light when the van rattles and we’ve never had to replace the ocm that I know off the only time the check engine light came on was when our ignition coils went out that was the only time the check engine light came on. While watching your video, I notice you had a shim. How crucial is it, and where does it go? The car didn’t have one when removing the parts, and curious to as why it didn’t come in the TB kit.
    I did the first TB and kit on the vehicle. After starting it for a minute and topping off the radiator and power steering pump, I went to turn on the heater on and the rpm’s dropped really low. Turned it off and notice my rpm’s are lower than it usually is at 1000 rpm’s.
    Would like to add the shim when I go back in there tomorrow to figure out why it’s dropping.

      It's a real pain to get in there, and usually if one component goes the others will follow soon. The Odyssey has an interference engine as well, so if the timing belt breaks or jumps it can cause catastrophic damage to the engine. It's better to replace the tensioner, water pump, and pulleys in one go and save the headache.

    My house is a huge mess. Wish I had an earthquake to blame it on!
    But seriously -- glad all is well up there.

    Very very informative video. I have an 04 odyssey and was wondering how many miles is on this one? Looks like the quake ruffled your hat crooked a touch 🤓 Again great video 👍

    Ahat rpm was that noise taken at? Sounded and looked like above idle speed.

    That oil on the timing cover is way too much even if all the tensioner oil was evenly spread over the cover!

    I'm starting to strongly suspect this is the issue on my 07 Pilot. Guess we'll find out soon.

    Mine is making the same noise, only it’s a slightly lower pitch rattle/knock. Could it be the timing belt tensioner? I have a 2011

      Did you get it fixed? If yes what was the issue?

  • @1fnjo790
    @1fnjo790 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If the T belt and water pump are still good and you set things at TDC and check everything still lines up . The tensioner can be replaced with everything still installed except the one upper cover.
