One of the things that gets me most about the scream is the fact that it is a real person screaming in real fear and horror as someone breaks into their home.
It's a bell, though heavily distorted, it also tells you how close or far you are from the nun. the faster it is, the closer the nun is, the slower the further she is, what makes puppet combo games terrifying is the way they can truly encapsulate any fears or thing that just make you feel uneasy.
I feel like the ending where you get stuck in the vent and the light figure goes towards you is the character your playing going crazy after going to far down the vents. It gives this vibe that you've gone down this long path for so long in a tight area that you start to go crazy thinking theres no escape which causes you to hallucinate and make it feel like the walls are closing in on you. Tbh though, I have no idea what the figure represents lol
It's definitely close to this, even the high pitched ringing is a common side effect of you blood pressure dropping before you die. As for the lil alien dude, I wish I could pick puppet combo's brain to know what that guy is.

Something I’ve grown to appreciate, is that the sequence after you’ve been found by the Nun is the closest a game has ever gotten to emulating a panic attack from my experience thus far.

I’ve always felt like this game was underrated, in my opinion it is arguably one of the scariest horror games in terms of sound and atmosphere, and the barbed wire pit ending is a huge gem of horror
I dont know if it’s original to Alien Isolation or not but some of the game mechanics in the nun game remind me of it. The motion detector in alien isolation works the same way where the dot disappears if the alien is still and waiting to ambush us. Also the game teaches you to use vents to safely bypass areas until you learn the alien also travels through them and you can encounter it in the vents. For all I know, these game mechanics have existed long before even alien but wanted to add that in here just in case!
Yeah definitely a thing likely before both of these games. It's such a good mechanic though, Alien Isolation is definitely up there on my top list of horror games.

Nun massacre doesn’t fit as a game that is comfortable to everyone, it’s actually scary and raw. Not a good fit for kids and adults alike, meaning it’s not gonna have a long lasting community like the popular horror games
@@dachel683 True, but it’s not as popular as other horror games such as FNAF or Baldi’s Basics due to its lack of kid appeal with cartoony appearances and stuff that would attract a large portion of younger audiences. Because of that, the community is quite small compared to other horror franchises as well as other Puppet Combo games. But I’m personally okay with that since kids are usually the main culprit for a toxic community
Normally I only get scared by playing horror games myself. But watching this right now, watching the nun creeping into your window being unable to move in the pit. That scared tf out of me

I love retro/cheap/old styled horror games so much... something about the simpleness of the graphics makes it even creepier. If the environments were realistic, it'd at least make you expect a scare, but how blocky everything is exudes a sense of nostalgia and safety. Like you can only see the world at its most simple, and there's something horrifying underneath.
what I love about puppet combo is no matter if the idea they have is one used 1000 times before or the most creative and original posible, their execution will always be exceptional, and thats what matters with horror
The barbed wire pit has to be a reference to the original Suspiria, like the room is even bathed in blue like in the film. It's cool this game draws inspiration from more than just slashers, makes me feel like the creators really understand horror and love it and not just people who've watched one slasher flick and noticed horror and 80s aesthetic is popular and wanted to cash in
This has been mentioned a lot, and I didn’t even make the connection, but looking back it’s almost definitely the case. Puppet combo and torture star as a whole really do have a deep love for horror, and you can tell if you follow them a little bit. Definitely have some deep cuts in their watch catalogue
Would recommend Stay Out Of The House, their latest game. It's like an expanded, gorier version of this game with even more villains such as the baby and the dog and the grandma. It's great.
i very much so appreciate the noise warnings, im really bad with horror but i love watching analysis..es… whatever the plural of analysis is lol - but i hate when people just put in the scary parts without warning because it triggers my anxiety quite a bit. very well made 👍
The "light being alien" is the kid that run across your vision. Other than that, I really do love Clock Tower-esque horror games with a constant pursuer. This game is no exception.
I loved Murderhouse & I got Stay out of the House for free, but I can not play through Nun Massacre. I bought in on the Switch & it's by far the scariest game on Switch. The first time she chased & killed me inside the vents is when I quit. She looks like a demon pretending to be a human with the way she kneels through the vents. Scary shit!
Maybe you haven't watched the Buzz Saw Blood House yet, also by Puppet Combo House 🥲 it's like a more "twisted" Red Room Escape Game. It was harder than this with lots of insane and deadly mazes

as someone with very sensitive hearing, i really appreciate that there was ample warning for every loud noise in the video! i honestly wouldnt expect most people to have more than just one warning at the start, but the extra effort means i don't have to keep the volume really far down for the whole video

I think the scariest part is the barb pit when you get trapped for me, the fact you can't move but the nun moves into your line of sight and you're POWERLESS to do anything as she whispers god knows what before she ends your suffering. It's a prolonged death.
The first time I heard the nun's jumpscare I literally reacted to some type of "fight or flight" sense cause I almost jumped out of my chair to run out of my irl room lol.

Ive been following all sorts of horror games for years and nun massacre is easily top 3 out of any game ive played and seen. Its simple but its so terrifying and all the sound and level design is perfect and leaves you feeling insane
amazing video. i have a completely new level of appreciation for this game thanks to this video, the fact that the scream in the jumpscare was taken from a real scream makes it much more horrifying. 8:15 sent shivers down my spine
I think what made this game so unsettling to me was simply how unreal-almost dream like-the ambiance and the situation you were in felt. Like, this is not the type of building you would usually find yourself in, rooms shapes in odd ways, doors and floors that lean upright, the unusually narrow hallways and scrambled, randomly assorted furniture. It all just doesn't feel "right". Like your mind has seen these places before but something always feels a little off and not where it's supposed to be.

Ruth Price lore: No one knows if the call was real or just used as a training call. It's used as a training call for Dispatchers to learn that they have to get location as soon as possible. As the Dispatcher fails to do so. It's illegal to release a 911 call of someone passing away on call. People have found a Ruth Price grave but can't confirm it was her. So really not many people know where this call came from, If it's real or a hoax or even if its used for training. Definitely a spine chilling scream, one I've heard in person before too.
No there a San Diego Evening Tribute article from November 3 1980 of a Ruth Price who was attack while calling the police about a prowler before being attack and then fighting them off. It also the same Ruth Price people found the obituary to who died in 1994 who formerly lived at 3877 N 35th street.
I lived in a haunted house in my early 20s with some roommates. It was very haunted. Everyone had encounters with the ghost. It used to be a nunnery that was converted into a duplex.
puppetcombo is responsible for almost my entire top 5 indie horror games, the ps1 graphics are so nostalgic and add an extra layer of grittiness to the environments. amazing video!
the horror here is ingenious- the visuals are scary enough, but when you add the screamers and jumpscares over it, it's almost hard to not have nightmares about it.

The only thing that can be 'fixed' in your video is the sudden cut or mute in your microphone which makes the video less serious. Apart from that very good video!
Thanks for the constructive criticism. I noticed that myself, and tried to elevate how jarring the cut was. It was a lot worse before hand, but I'll work on finding a way to blend it better so flows better.
technically it might be something that needs to be worked on but psychologically it made me feel alone with the game, like getting voice instructions at a museum when you know that it was prerecorded

I love horror, but can't tolerate jump scares and there have been vids in the past (not yours, obvi haha) that I couldn't finish because content creators had the jump scare from the video game play multiple times at full volume, which is really too bad. The way you mixed your audio and the warnings kept this video accessible for me, which I really appreciate! Super great vid too btw!
I know this probably makes it less scary, but the Ruth Price call was not real, it was used as training for dispatchers. If you listen to the full call, you'll understand. It's basically what "not to do" as a dispatcher.

But I wish you went into detail about the Nun Massacre lore and the tragedy of the MC's daughter and why the game is a psychological horror To explain: The nun is a representation of the sins of MC: Mrs. McDonnell sending her own child: Janie, to a school that made her daughter kill herself. Mother Apolonia: The head nun bullied and shamed Janie to the point she was a social outcast, and even went so far as to use her authority against her, like forcing Janie to cover herself in her own shit after not letting Janie use the bathroom. Mrs Macdonnell let this abuse go on to make sure Janie "didn't become a sinful person" and after Janie learned that, she hung herself to escape her torturous life. Thus, Mrs Macdonnell goes to the abandoned school to have her life taken by a nun. Thus the lore heavy endings are either Mrs Macdonnell fully accepting that she should die for her sins, or accepting her sins and being forgiven by Janie's sentient toy: Bongo. (Bongo being sentient is just a thing) There's also a great reference the nun being a psychological entity. You can notice in the game that one shadowy figure keeps popping in an out the ground, awaiting for the Mrs Macdonnell to enter the school. Even though this figure can apparently phase through reality itself, it waits until Mrs Macdonnell enters the school to terrify Mrs Macdonnell and give her a painful death. Much like what happened with Janie.
At least in my experience there are very few horror games that capture that feeling of never being safe that nun massacre captures. The only ones I can think of resident evil 7 and RE2 with The Baker family and Mr. X. The only difference being that in both of those games, there are dedicated areas where they can't attack you that nun massacre intentionally doesn't have. I wish there were more horror games that capitalize on this feeling of dread because it's a powerful way to scare your audience. edit: Just remembered that alien isolation does this tool with the xenomorph lol
Alien Isolation does have a lot of safe areas. Half of the levels don't even have the alien in them and the ones that do have narrative sections and other rooms that the alien isn't allowed to enter. Of course upon leaving those areas you'll swiftly be one shot killed and sent back 30 minutes for the 18th that level.
First and foremost, wonderful video! I'd probably say that Nun Massacre is my favorite Puppet Combo title, but I also haven't finished Stay Out of the House yet so it could possibly change, and it is the Puppet Combo game I've replayed the most and achieved every ending. The nun and the jumpscares continue to scare me everytime, and the menu theme is such a wonderful track.
There is actually another game made by the same person I think where it's the pov of one of the children in the school and they become a killer of some sort. It's super interesting as it's a different game but the 2 games are connected. I've only seen other TH-camrs play it sense I can't get it myself p.s. Also new subscriber sense I already love this video not even halfway through :)

This has been mentioned a lot, and I didn’t even make the connection, but looking back it’s almost definitely the case. Puppet combo and torture star as a whole really do have a deep love for horror, and you can tell if you follow them a little bit.

Would recommend Stay Out Of The House, their latest game. It's like an expanded, gorier version of this game with even more villains such as the baby and the dog and the grandma. It's great.

i very much so appreciate the noise warnings, im really bad with horror but i love watching analysis..es… whatever the plural of analysis is lol - but i hate when people just put in the scary parts without warning because it triggers my anxiety quite a bit.

The "light being alien" is the kid that run across your vision. Other than that, I really do love Clock Tower-esque horror games with a constant pursuer. This game is no exception.

I loved Murderhouse & I got Stay out of the House for free, but I can not play through Nun Massacre. I bought in on the Switch & it's by far the scariest game on Switch. The first time she chased & killed me inside the vents is when I quit. She looks like a demon pretending to be a human with the way she kneels through the vents. Scary shit!

Maybe you haven't watched the Buzz Saw Blood House yet, also by Puppet Combo House 🥲 it's like a more "twisted" Red Room Escape Game. It was harder than this with lots of insane and deadly mazes
THIS game was the reason why I fell in love with Puppet Combo Games back in 2019.
The monster actively hiding to try to ambush you as well as gaslighting the player is absolutely brilliant, I'm glad I don't play these games :)

While this game is great, I’m a bigger fan of “stay out the house”. Idk if you’ve played it but it’s also a puppet combo game and I think would be a cool one to make a video about.
I’ve definitely played stay out of the house, and have plans on making a video about it in the future, just a little tied up right now with future projects.

i honestly wouldnt expect most people to have more than just one warning at the start, but the extra effort means i don't have to keep the volume really far down for the whole video

I've heard that 911 call before, thats crazy that they chose that to be a sound in the game.
I think the scariest part is the barb pit when you get trapped for me, the fact you can't move but the nun moves into your line of sight and you're POWERLESS to do anything as she whispers god knows what before she ends your suffering. It's a prolonged death.

It's just so good at its job, it scares the player and also has a good plot line.
The first time I heard the nun's jumpscare I literally reacted to some type of "fight or flight" sense cause I almost jumped out of my chair to run out of my irl room lol.

Ive been following all sorts of horror games for years and nun massacre is easily top 3 out of any game ive played and seen. Its simple but its so terrifying and all the sound and level design is perfect and leaves you feeling insane

amazing video. i have a completely new level of appreciation for this game thanks to this video, the fact that the scream in the jumpscare was taken from a real scream makes it much more horrifying. 8:15 sent shivers down my spine
I think what made this game so unsettling to me was simply how unreal-almost dream like-the ambiance and the situation you were in felt. Like, this is not the type of building you would usually find yourself in, rooms shapes in odd ways, doors and floors that lean upright, the unusually narrow hallways and scrambled, randomly assorted furniture. It all just doesn't feel "right". Like your mind has seen these places before but something always feels a little off and not where it's supposed to be.
my alarm sound for waking up in the morning is the nun massacre chase theme and has been for a few years now. i still wake up in horror sometimes

No one knows if the call was real or just used as a training call. It's used as a training call for Dispatchers to learn that they have to get location as soon as possible. As the Dispatcher fails to do so.
It's illegal to release a 911 call of someone passing away on call. People have found a Ruth Price grave but can't confirm it was her. So really not many people know where this call came from, If it's real or a hoax or even if its used for training. Definitely a spine chilling scream, one I've heard in person before too.
No there a San Diego Evening Tribute article from November 3 1980 of a Ruth Price who was attack while calling the police about a prowler before being attack and then fighting them off. It also the same Ruth Price people found the obituary to who died in 1994 who formerly lived at 3877 N 35th street.

puppetcombo is responsible for almost my entire top 5 indie horror games, the ps1 graphics are so nostalgic and add an extra layer of grittiness to the environments. amazing video!
the horror here is ingenious- the visuals are scary enough, but when you add the screamers and jumpscares over it, it's almost hard to not have nightmares about it.

I noticed that myself, and tried to elevate how jarring the cut was. It was a lot worse before hand, but I'll work on finding a way to blend it better so flows better.
technically it might be something that needs to be worked on but psychologically it made me feel alone with the game, like getting voice instructions at a museum when you know that it was prerecorded

13:06 i think that's the ghost kid that's been running about taking revenge on the one helpless, living adult in the school. The light that follows this dead child, is the fabled light at the end of the tunnel.
Interesting take, I like the tying the light at the end of the tunnel to the light he makes.
So the difference between a bad unity game and a puppet combo game is jsut how loud the jumpscare is

Hey, thank you so much for the ample warnings before loud noises and making sure the loud noises don't exceed the average volume of the rest of your video. I love horror, but can't tolerate jump scares and there have been vids in the past (not yours, obvi haha) that I couldn't finish because content creators had the jump scare from the video game play multiple times at full volume, which is really too bad. The way you mixed your audio and the warnings kept this video accessible for me, which I really appreciate! Super great vid too btw!

I know this probably makes it less scary, but the Ruth Price call was not real, it was used as training for dispatchers. If you listen to the full call, you'll understand. It's basically what "not to do" as a dispatcher.
Good video and I'm glad you even made one to show respect to this game. But I wish you went into detail about the Nun Massacre lore and the tragedy of the MC's daughter and why the game is a psychological horror
To explain: The nun is a representation of the sins of MC: Mrs. McDonnell sending her own child: Janie, to a school that made her daughter kill herself. Mother Apolonia: The head nun bullied and shamed Janie to the point she was a social outcast, and even went so far as to use her authority against her, like forcing Janie to cover herself in her own shit after not letting Janie use the bathroom.
Mrs Macdonnell let this abuse go on to make sure Janie "didn't become a sinful person" and after Janie learned that, she hung herself to escape her torturous life.
Thus, Mrs Macdonnell goes to the abandoned school to have her life taken by a nun. Thus the lore heavy endings are either Mrs Macdonnell fully accepting that she should die for her sins, or accepting her sins and being forgiven by Janie's sentient toy: Bongo. (Bongo being sentient is just a thing)
There's also a great reference the nun being a psychological entity. You can notice in the game that one shadowy figure keeps popping in an out the ground, awaiting for the Mrs Macdonnell to enter the school.
Even though this figure can apparently phase through reality itself, it waits until Mrs Macdonnell enters the school to terrify Mrs Macdonnell and give her a painful death. Much like what happened with Janie.
At least in my experience there are very few horror games that capture that feeling of never being safe that nun massacre captures. The only ones I can think of resident evil 7 and RE2 with The Baker family and Mr. X. The only difference being that in both of those games, there are dedicated areas where they can't attack you that nun massacre intentionally doesn't have. I wish there were more horror games that capitalize on this feeling of dread because it's a powerful way to scare your audience.
edit: Just remembered that alien isolation does this tool with the xenomorph lol
Alien Isolation does have a lot of safe areas. Half of the levels don't even have the alien in them and the ones that do have narrative sections and other rooms that the alien isn't allowed to enter. Of course upon leaving those areas you'll swiftly be one shot killed and sent back 30 minutes for the 18th that level.

First and foremost, wonderful video! I'd probably say that Nun Massacre is my favorite Puppet Combo title, but I also haven't finished Stay Out of the House yet so it could possibly change, and it is the Puppet Combo game I've replayed the most and achieved every ending. The nun and the jumpscares continue to scare me everytime, and the menu theme is such a wonderful track.

There is actually another game made by the same person I think where it's the pov of one of the children in the school and they become a killer of some sort. It's super interesting as it's a different game but the 2 games are connected. I've only seen other TH-camrs play it sense I can't get it myself
