I’ve noticed that a common thread with so many of us that are part of John’s community is that we want these bikes because they are the bikes we had (or more likely…wanted) when we first started cycling.
@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage Hi from England ! I had 57 bikes 2 years ago all sold off now and kept a few rare ones and x team bikes , but the rest sold as prices dropping on classic bikes in the UK , just sold a Viscount for next to nothing , unwanted now with Carbon bikes around it has ruined the market for classic bikes ...
Life keeps flowing like a river and we have to adapt sometimes. I have a bike mechanic that has been in the business at least 40 years. He and his wife bought a house many years ago with a double car garage up front and a giant workshop behind. It is full to the rafters - literally - with bikes and frames. What is going to happen when....? One of the members of the local club whom I met almost 40 years ago died recently. He and his wife toured and rode for many years. There is a basement full of really nice bikes. As much as we are attached to them, they are things. In most hobbies the accumulation over time continues without an exit strategy. The best of luck with the house search and plans. Maybe you'll find somewhere you can take the bikes out and exercise them more. You are generous to share the joy of the collection and fulfill other's dreams for the one that got away.
We think along the same lines. My hobbies run from guns to high end audio and bikes (I own two vintage bikes, a '93 Bridgestone RB-1 and an '86 Schwinn Paramount). But like you said, they are THINGS after all, objects that we might say we "love" but can't love us back. I keep that perspective in mind when I catch myself lusting after anything material.
@@MarkMiller-i8q Emotions about things is an interesting way to express this. A bicycle may be the result of passion and precision but it also is an object designed to have a particular function. If it is pretty but does not work well than it is less than the sum of its parts. I have a bike that I bought based on an emotional response to what it looks like. To not ride and enjoy it seems a bit of a waste. If something is delicate or old or really valuable...but that is a personal choice. I will not judge another regarding that. Nick Mason has a company with some other car collectors to make rare and valuable cars available for film or advertising. It gets them used and helps to support the costs of keeping them. It is sad to see the barn finds of things left for decades to lie unused and unseen. Compared with collections some companies have of vintage models that are iegularity exercised. Again my observations, people can decide for themselves what they want to do with their things.
@@davidbee9563 I hear you. Gun collectors have their safe queens, bike collectors tack their bikes to a wall. To each his/her own. But I could never see buying a gun I don't shoot, a bike I don't ride or a record I don't listen to. But that's just me.
Good luck to you...l'm sure you'll find what you're looking for.. Thank you for all the video's as well, and taking us along on the journey too. Much appreciated.
I commend your choice to be debt free. My wife and I watched our parents retire on limited and fixed incomes but...They were able because they were debt free. Five years ago we paid off our house and have never looked back. Keep up the good videos and sometimes being a responsible adult hurts but only for a short time. Good luck and God be with you..

Good luck John with what you are doing, I did a similar thing a few years ago here in England, still got my bikes , although not as many as you, bigger place and owe nothing to nobody . ( now 77 and still riding )
Your amazing collection of vintage bikes that you are now sharing with future collectors and riders. This is very special! Awesome! And future successes to come.
Very cool John! The buying experience is part of the enjoyment of a bike. I have some great stories behind some of my buys and look to pass them on to the next buyer when I can't keep the rubber on the road anymore.
Excellent video, completely get your rationale behind the reorganization, we did something similar a few years ago and it has been great. Keep up the vintage bike content!
It was watching you build up that garage space from nothing is when I got hooked on this channel. You really turned it into a gorgeous “Vintage Bicycle Garage”. Sad to see it go but I’m looking forward to seeing you create an entire new space bigger and better! (and one that you won’t have to drive to).

Well that was a surprise! John, you’ve shared such great videos of your collection. Interesting, fun and informative! The garage concept was awesome. A bike/car generous social club and event space. The Ba-Da-Bike social club! All the best on what is ahead!
Good luck with your plans! I had the same sort of feelings but they were tempered by turning it all into money (what we didn't give away, that is) that I could take with me, retire in Italy and buy a house there..debt-free. I miss my large shop space and some of the bikes I had to sell-off but I wouldn't trade the lifestyle I enjoy now for all the acres of land and square-feet of housing on earth!
@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage Recently even parted with some bikes I swore I'd never sell. But they were carbon-fiber, not steel, so... Still have some vintage bikes for what they call "bici d'epoca" rides here in Italy + 3 steel frames from builders whose hands I shook one time or another. Those might just be wall-art someday but I hope to never part with them. Meanwhile, the bikes I actually RIDE pretty much every day now are modern ones with (gag) disc brakes/thru-axles...and MAHLE hub-mounted motors! But I use the assist only when things get steep OR when I've bitten off a longer ride than I can chew and need some help avoiding a "death-march" back home. But lacking the e-assist I'd be limited to shorter/flatter rides so the trade-off is worth it since I can still get out there while pushing 70 trips around the sun!
John, Be well. Best of success on the house hunt. All good reasons to combine house and bicycle barn on one land parcel. Thank you for the RRBCycle frameset shout out. Ron Boi ,,,,,
Glad to see the RRB. Receive mine straight from Ron just over a year ago. According to Ron mine was made for a tall guy in 1976. Looking forward to more videos on the RRB. Lon Haldeman had always been a mythical hero to me. Remember watching the GABR and RAAM’s on ABC Wide World of Sports as a kid. As an adult, I later moved to WV near the route of the RAAM and would always go and wait for some of the racers to ride by. I was standing along Route 50 near a side road, and a RAAM official’s van stops. And who came out of the van totally shocked me. It was Lon! It’s true what they say about him knowing every back road in America. The side road we were at, he started talking about where it went and where it came out at. I got my picture taken with him and have it on my mantle to this day. I remember seeing when he lost his race bikes from the early days from a fire. So much history lost. So sad. Anyways, always enjoyed seeing Lon in your videos. Would be cool to see Ron Boi in your video as well with your frame.
