all though you say its not fancy, i really liked it and you did an awesome job. That spot with the bark still showing with the moss was really cool make for a good garden piece.

While Oliver wasn't actually in much danger, the appearance of danger certainly leads to more comments. TH-cam interprets that as "engagement" and rewards it.
He briefly ran the lathe too fast to demonstrate that he was doing something near the limit of that machine.
I found it interesting, so I gave it a thumbs up.
I agree to try to knock of the corners first. To any beginners watching, this is dangerous.

I agree, especially when he marked out the end circle on the table saw, which could have removed much of that edge bulk in seconds
@@kingy002 I offered advice. For any beginners watching, then trying this for themselves. Didn't criticize his work, just a certain method that would be considered dangerous to any professional. Also, it puts a lot of strain on the machine and tools. You don't need a TH-cam channel to offer advice but you have lost him a subscriber.
@@kingy002 I think your response was a little more dramatic than mine so let's leave it there please. The law doesn't state that you need content on your channel in order to comment on other people's channels.
Anyway, if the owner has a problem with what I say then he could comment, not one of his followers..

I actually like this one very much, because it's beautiful in its simplicity. It reminds me of myself: beautiful and soft in most areas and rustic, rough, hard, and raw in other area. Perfectly imperfect! Thanks Olivier.

This is amazing! I love it! Keeping a bit of the wild with it is a wonderful idea.
I now have an idea about a vase with a concave side, deep enough for a bowl to sit, or if it had a raised edge, perhaps shallow rooted plants like succulents could grow. With a decently long neck, it would still be possible to be used as a vase as well. But even without the long neck, a squat vase with the cave on the side seems very cool in my mind. If you were ever to bring it to life, I would be happy beyond words!
I know little of wood-turning outside of your videos, so maybe this idea isn't truly feasible. It is sort of "C" shaped, maybe even clam-like. I suppose that would be very hard to wood turn from a single piece... but multiple pieces, maybe? I've seen you do much more amazing things, so I assume anything is possible under your hands!

I like the bark aspect of that vase. It gives a nice natural look especially with some nice lush plant in the vase.
But I wonder why you didn't cut the excessive bit protruding out before rounding it out. Wouldn't it have made turning it a lot easier.
I also wonder why a lot of wood turning videos I see on TH-cam don't cut the major excess of on a regular table or band saw before turning it... Just to show off how patient they are? Or how powerful their lathe is?
@@CaptainBDSC people probably like watching the long way because it's more interesting of a before and after
I agree - if nothing else it’s SO dangerous to have the unstable piece spinning at several hundred RPM, not to mention the high chance of catching the tool and ripping it out of your hand (however experienced the turner is). Beautiful piece, but should be safer

I recently re-watched some of your segmeted vase videos and after seeing how you plan out the pattern I wondered if it would be possible to take a piece of pixelart and transfer the picture into the segments of a turned vase.
Might be a fun project, I'd enjoy watching you make it if it's something you're interested in doing.

I have to admit, when you first started turning that awkward log, I was a bit concerned. If that thing spun in the wrong direction....that could have been ugly.

@@fredjust même un ou deux coups de hache bien placés, histoire de couper les coins, en plus il aurait gagné un temps fou au tournage. Ou alors c'était voulu 🤷♂️

Very well done, but perhaps you could have trimmed it off a little before gouging it out. There's always a risk of the gouge bouncing off and gouging something it was never meant to gouge.

What if for the top of the vase, and where the crack is, you used thin CA glue and flood the wood with it, to make it less soft and to fill in the crack?
What do you use to finish your peices?
I don't know anything about turning so please do not take this as criticism, I just want to understand. When working on such an odd and unbalanced object why don't you use a saw of some kind(any number would be applicable) to knock off the corners? I don't mean using a band or scroll saw to make it semi-round, but at least make it a little closer to the final shape. Thanks for the content I enjoy this channel a lot.
