If you see the pick-up truck selling fresh Durian or in the local market, go for it guys. I suggest you buy the whole durian not the one in the package and ask the vendor "mai sook mak" means not too ripe. or "grob nok noom nai" means crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, you'll get the perfect one. You can find Durian Mon Thong everywhere in the market. It's popular and affordable price for most of Thai people. Durian Kan Yao is quite rare in the market, that"s why it's more expensive.

agreed that both Anthony and Caroline learned Thai very quick, too quick for people who leave in Thailand less than a year and didn't go to the Thai language school. Your listening is great. I think you understand a lot of the common Thai and can easily live in Thailand. Just keep asking and talking to the sellers.

I’m Thai living in Bangkok. This market is my favorite market. A bit pricey with good quality. “Sud jai kai yang” selling Somtum and grilled chicken are really really good. Thai dessert , fruits there are all good.

@@ChovyTravel For Durian, you got it right. “Kan Yao ก้านยาว” is more difficult to find in normal market. Most common type are “Morn Thong หมอนทอง” and “Chanee ชะนี” are easier to find and cheaper accordingly.
You may try “Mangosteen มังคุด” after eating durian since it brings coolness to your body. Durian brings you heat. You shouldn’t drink alcohol after while eating durian. You eat mangosteen by eating the white meat inside.
Also I recommend rambutan เงาะ and longan ลำใย , just peel off the outside skin, they both are sweet. These 4 fruits are seasonal fruits during this time.
For mango “Mamoung มะม่วง”, “Ork Rong อกร่อง” and “Nam Dok Mai น้ำดอกไม้” will be very sweet when turn yellow and eat with stick rice. I also like “Kiew Savoey เขียวเสวย” with green skin which you can eat it raw or ripe.
Hope you enjoy and like them 😊😋

Durian will be stinky if it's too ripe, more than 90%.
    - Crispy at the surface and creamy inside, medium sweet = 50% ripe.
    - Soft both at the surface and inside, 75% sweet = 60-80% ripe.
    - More than these, tit's too soft, too sweet and smell very strong.
Your mangoes at the end is the same type we use in "Mango with Sticky Rice", it's the best choice for this menu.
Enjoy, have a great time. 💚

I can’t wait to be back in Thailand next week and be able to try fresh durian. The first time I had it was last year in Australia and it tasted like meat and raw onions to me lol I had a similar experience to Anthony, swearing off it haha but I am ready to try it properly after watching your vlog.
Because durian is a heating food you should eat mangosteen afterwards to cool your body down.

Durian is considered king of fruits in Thailand and your favorite kind “Kan Yao” is King of kings especially from the Nonthaburi Province (near Bangkok) but the price is also very high.
And just one other thing, you must never ever eat that oyster pancake or omelette or whatever u call with peanuts. (Yesss it’s designated to eat with PadThai!!)

You must go to the Thonburi fresh market located on the other side of the Chao-praya river. Locals go there for fresh seafood and they cook seafood for you right there in the market. It's a very big market, there are all kinds of foods including fruits and vegetables there. There are also many well-known restaurants in that market. But you should go before 11 a.m. It gets crowded at noon and the traffic would get stuck by many Chinese tour buses.

From the price point of Durian 100 g for 150 baht that so EXPENSIVE compare to other places in average are 150-250 baht per 1 kg. But from the quality that I see in the video, still worth it because the price always higher after the end of May-June due to season changing and the merchant needs to select the best quality for selling which involving many skills
If you really want to have durians during the season without being robbed. I recommend you to eat Durain in the peak summer during April-May (depend on the sun and hot weather in that year) or you can eat “Durian buffet” which I know one place at Central Festival in Pattaya for 599-899 baht per person.
I am a big fan of Durian and I’m gonna say that Durian this year doesn’t rich and fresh like last year due to climate change. The alternative food choices for Durian craving people would be Durian ice cream, Durian paste and Durian fried. They’re all good to try and very compatible with beer. >0<
I’m impressed on how you doubt yourself to try something that you would hate on the first try like Durian. And find out you’re totally loving in it. Thank you for sharing

The green string is called Lord Chong which is made of pandas leaves juice mixed with some flours then you boil it and it becomes Lord Chong. Other ingredients in the dessert from what I saw is the Tubtim Krob which is water chestnut in tapioca flour. The yellow string is jackfruit. This is one of my favorite Thai desserts :)

Nice to see you guys come back from Malaysia. I have't finish the Malaysia clip. Lot of things to eat at Or Tor Kor. Yes, spoon on the right hand. Fork on the left hand like normal. Mussels pancake is dilicous, normal sell beside padthai. I also like E-sarn sausauge. For the desserts in Thailand, nowaday we don't make it really sweet because we know that sweet is not good for our health. I love to eat durian too.

'Or Tor Kor (Kor; its vowel be like 'gore') is a "premium market" most of fruits or foods sold there are high quality come with higher price than other markets, so people often to buy there for 'gift basket' 'congratulated occasions'
Also durian has some enzyme that blocks your alcohol metabolism, so alcohol will stay in your bloodstream longer than usual, so we will NOT recommend you eat durian and drink alcohol at the same time.

Durian’s strong smell is from over ripe durian. With ‘just right’ ripe durian, there is no strong smell, actually it has very sweet pleasant fragrant. However the ‘just right’ ripe period of durian is very short, 1-2 days only. After that durian is overripe, resulting in the strong smell you experience, which is quite objectionable to newcomers. But the strong smell is preferable to many more people.
Because of the ‘just right’ period is very short, buyers beed to be experienced, or otherwise opt for expensive shop like the one in OrTorKor. You can find the ‘just right’ durian, but you have to know what to look for.
But this does not mean the shop with overripe durian is a scam. They cannot fool anyone since the smell is presented. And actually more Thai love the overripe durian. Maybe after have durian for 2-3 years, you will appreciate the creamier texture and deep flavor of overripe durian.

    • @ChovyTravel
      @ChovyTravel  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think I can handle the smell but to a certain point. Even the ones at the supermarket, I can handle that. But the ones from the states, I cannot handle it. Thank you for explaining it in such detail 😃❤️🫰🙏

    • @surapolp
      @surapolp 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@ChovyTravel That's is because it was too overripe. Everyone hates it. I have never met anyone, even Thai, like it. Not only the obnoxious smell, it tastes bitter also. Thinking about the shipping time. And most importantly, because of durian is not so popular there, the traders need to keep their inventory for so much longer time than traders in Thai market.
For "very overripe" durian, we will not sell it in fresh fruit form. we'll make it into "Pickled" form, and KhaoNeaw Durian, as you've seen in Thai market. These processed form will sell for less profit though.
So the most expensive is the "just right" ripe durian (1-2 days in this state), the one you had in this video. The less expensive is the ones you see much more commonly in Thai markets (not more than 4-5 days after the first state), this one is the most popular here. And the least expensive one are in the processed forms. Durian sold in countries outside east asia are mostly "very overripe". They should not be sold as fresh fruit anyway, That is how durian got its bad reputation.
Thais are not weird in liking all states of durian. We hate those smelly overripe durian also.
But believe it or not, the worst durian is not the "very overripe" durian, since no one can scam you into buying it, because of its smell. The worst one is the not properly ripe one. Without cutting it completely, it can be passed off as "just right" durian, the most expensive one. Because the smell is not strong, just a bit pleasant. Traders can fooled people into believing it as the most expensive durian. Unripe durian, has no taste. It is almost like having plastic or synthetic no-taste food. Just pure terrible. This definitely is a scam, since people paid highest price for it and found out at home that they bought rubbish. And after you cut durian open a little bit, it will not ripe properly anymore. After cut it open and wait for a few days, it will ripe unevenly, most part stay unripe, fewer become ripe, but the rest just become very smelly and bitter. Before you put a knife into durian, you must know beforehand that it is ripe just right. It's almost an art.
Even the Commerce Ministry decrees selling off unripe durian to public is a punishable crime, a few years ago. Luckily, after that, there is not so much incident of that kind in public.

Oh wow! So Fascinating! So much we didn’t know about Durian and the process of everything.
I guess the one I tried in the states was really spoiled. The texture was horrible and mushy and stinky.

@@ChovyTravel Durian is best to eat instantly right out of the shell. As you have experienced, durian fresh out of shell doesn’t have strong smell yet. The longer it stays out of shell, the stronger the smell will develop. You did good that you ate it right out of the shell. kan-yao is the sweetest, mon-thong is mildest especially the one that perfectly ripe you get a little crispy outside and smooth inside and the best among all in my opinion, and the worst one is cha-nee but it seems that the older people like it, I don't know why, this one is a bit liquidly and have the most fiber.

I am impressed you two try fresh durian at Or tor kor market. This year the price is high due to the hot weather. There are so many kinds of durian in Thailand, and they taste differently. Some are rare and very expensive too. Please do not eat durian with alcohol, it’s a definitely NO. Some people died because the inside organs stop functioning from the heat.

Really!!?? Didn’t know Durian was that expensive. I’m assuming, it must be considered a luxury in Thailand.
All in all, we’re very happy to have tried it because it was delicious 🤤

Thanks for sharing your experience, glad you like my country!
6:19 it's duck egg, this fried egg goes great with Kraprao. You can tell by the bright orange yolk and translucent white egg which is different from chicken egg.
13:50 it's actually has no condense milk. it's mainly made from coconut milk, palm sugar, salt and if it's also fragrant it's smoked with fragrance candle.
14:51 that mango they sell by Kilo, one Kilo for 280 THB and the first box is about 6.x Kilo. They also has smaller size box which is about 5 Kilo.
17:11 maybe it's because Durion in the US is over ripe. Normally the smell get stronger when it's ripe, you can tell by the tenderness of the meat.

Actually my office is not far from this market, only 20-minute walking. But I don't have a good reason to have lunch there in work day. Last month I went to Chatuchak weekend market to buy elephant pants as souvenir for my relatives in Malaysia and I have lunch in Chatuchak.

Since you just came back from Malaysia, you should've compared Thai vs Malaysian Durians.
In general, Thais prefer sweeter, creamier durian that's crispier on the outside and softer on the inside. The smell is quite floral & they're generally easier to eat for durian beginners and more palatable. The color is a pale, pastel yellow.
Malaysians (& Singaporeans) prefer riper durians that are more pungent, it has a deeper, richer taste that's almost bitter and stronger smell. The texture is more gooey and 'wet'. Many Malaysians claim their durians are more for durian aficionados, rather than beginners. The color is dark, deep yellow.
Malaysians think Thai durians are unripe & not worth eating while Thais won't touch Malaysian durians because they think it's rotten. I suspect the kind you might have encountered before were Malaysian durians due to the stronger smell.

Hello 👋 unfortunately we weren’t able to try Malaysian durian this time. We would love to try it though!
One I had before was in America and it probably was the frozen kind. That’s probably why it was so bad.
