- Virtuoso violinist Lisa Grodin takes you on a musical tour of the violin bow from the early seventeenth century to the present, with musical examples for each bow.
In the time of Bach, Handel and Vivaldi, the instruments were different than they are today. One of the important differences in the baroque was the bow used to play string instruments. We have also made a companion video about the baroque violin: • Baroque violin and mod...
Although bows change through time, we do not say that they "evolve" or are part of music "evolution" as each bow is ideal for its time, and each period of music has the same level of artistry and imagination.

As someone who knows nothing on this subject, it would be interesting to hear the same piece played with all bows to hear the difference the v
Are we gunna act like she didn't just go supersaiyan in the intro?
whats that mean?
Lol
I thought that a huge difference comes from the way you played chords and rolling arpeggios with those old bows. They were soft, but the chord action was deliciously light and ringing - you could play those effortlessly. A modern bow, for all it's advantages literally crashes down like a hammer on old baroque chords and sometimes even causes the strings to squeal, not to mention that you have to break too many chords at times. All modern violinists struggle with Bach for example, in a way that baroque violinists don't.
"This is a modern bow" *drops bow on strings and has a stroke*

Definitely a comment of great note...
I thought what she played was quite brilliant, very difficult, and improvised on the spot.
@@VoicesofMusicyeah I agree don’t listen to these hate comments I loved the video ❤
@@MrGlbert1999 it isnt "hate comments" you just need to develop some toughness
That Intro though 👏👏
funny right
It’s sacrilegious
Very Impressed. Enjoyed so much. Please save for further study. Thank you Miss Grodin!
i would love to know what 2set thinks about the intro
Sacreligious
vicky robins why is it sacrilegious, this is violin history, just because it sounds cool doesn’t mean it applies to any unconventional violin situation.
Party!
Absolutely Delightful....! :) And very interesting.
You are a joy to watch and listen to. And your explanation of the different types of bows is fascinating.
Great job Lisa and wonderful playing too!!!
You’re amazing, Lisa! And great bow skills!
This was absolutely amazing. Different bows produce different colors from the same violin!
this is so awesome.
You need make these videos available for community contribution, so i can add some french subtitles.
Great idea, thanks.
This video is now available :)
anisometropie Benihime really
perfect explanation
Very nice demonstration on the different bows and their intended purposes.
w00t! Exactly right!
Yes, best to pair the modern bow with the modern violin.
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you 🙏🏽
Insane technique.
Less than a Ferrari :)
Very nice presentation ! :-)
Thanks!
Awesome.
Schooled me! Thanks :)
Very interesting. Of all the varieties of baroque bows,is the one which could be considered as a 'mainstream' bow ,that is a bow which takes care of all,or most music of this era?
There are bows of Corelli,Biber,Vivaldi etc etc.... Where does we start?!?
Lisa, can you plz make a video for helping on bow bouncing ? I am learning and trying to cure the problem. I wanna know whether my bow is correct as in whats the point of balance of the bow? perhaps it matters if it is too light towards the point compared with the frog end. Thanks for the video very informative
Also a VoM request. A nice HD close up of Bach bwv 1003 Andante would be awesome to see/hear it in it’s original Baroque style. Thanks.
Idea!
This lady is so amazing and beautiful!
When she was playing the Violin with the Modern Bow, All of a sudden the Violin was tuned to A = 440Hz.
It was a different violin ;) she used the same baroque violin for all other bows and then switched to a modern violin for the modern bow.
Wow nice what you doing,
Hi, Thanks for clarifying the different types of bow,, it really helped. I was wondering what piece was played on the 17th century bow?
Paul's Steeple, from John Playford's Division Violin (London, 1685).

Thanks!
exceptional, thankyou! would also be interested in the strings you use ? ... would love a discussion of what strings are a viable alternative to catgut, for baroque playing.
+Gordon Anderson Silk is the best alternative to sheep gut.
Voices of Music name of the pieces please!!!!! :)
Interesting
Хорошее наглядное объяснение.
По-русски эта палочка называется СМЫЧОК.
Будьте здоровы!
May I ask, from which period it is "allowed" to use vibrato? She did it with Corelli and I was a little bit confused.
Vibrato dates from the middle ages. Many different types of vibrato are documented as an ornament (not "always on") from the baroque period.
I wish she had played the same piece on the same violin, but with the different bows to demonstrate the differences.
Where can I buy a baroque viola bow?
please! What were the songs that she played? Voices of Music
The Beethoven was his Op. 18 No. 4 , His c minor quartet
Last question...i just bought a Baroque bow after watching these vids and attending a concert in San Fran. I know this somewhat subjective, but how tight do you make the hair? Tight enough to almost touch the stick when pressure applied or fairly tight so the stick is slightly convex? Thanks.
Best to ask a baroque violinist who can see your individual bow, but, in general, not too tight.
Voices of Music thanks...so it shouldn’t look like the Golden Gate bridge. Thanks.
(y) Wow!...Wonderful Sis.Lisa...keep up the good works!..share more your GOD given talents..let's transfer it to the next generation...life is short...Thanks a lot!...GBY MORE!
You are SO Good! You are know some thing....!!!
Why did we tend towards the modern bow? Also what makes one bow good for one thing or style over another bow?
You can more easily sustain the sound at the end of the bow. It's like a bowl cut or a layered cut. The earlier bows are a bit better at turning the corners.
Is she making fun of Ben Lee with the modern bow,
XD lol
I wish haha
5:37 what is the name of this piece?
Do Baroque bows slightly bend to the right to hug the strings fir chord work...or is my bow just slightly warped? 70’s bow I just picked up. Thanks.
Should not bend to the right. Sometimes they can be steamed straight, but if it is from the 70s..........good luck!
Thanks, these educational vids are icing on the cake and a bonus to the performances.
Realise this is quite an old thread. When comparing different bows for different periods and composers, Bach is a notable omission. Similar on other TH-cam videos on the same topic.
What type of bow would you use of solo Bach?
All of the information is detailed in the description and time codes. Click on "more" and you will see Bach at 1:52
So it is! I listened for it but missed the written info. Thanks for the reply. @@VoicesofMusic
Wich bow need to be used to play Vivaldi?
Preferably a baroque bow
Fabulous.. I am trying to reach you... re: one of my students
first part Ben li would mash the like button
Why are the bows of the baroque said to be around the 18th Century?
Traditionally, the end of the baroque period ends with Bach, Handel, Telemann and Vivaldi. These composers lasted until 1740-1760, and flourished in the the first half of the 18th century. You can extend the baroque somewhat if you include the early works of CPE Bach, although by 1754 you really start to see a change in musical style.
she change the violin in the beginning she was using an baroque violn and then in the final she used an modern violin too
Wish you would play the same piece so we can hear the difference the bow makes
hello. nice sound when you play. what is the title of Beethoven you play on this video?? help. hihihihiiiiii
It's the opening of the string quartet Op. 18 no. 4 in C minor.
So different bow produce different sound or are they have same sound, I can’t tell
It's a different sound.
It's also much easier to play the music with the suitable bow.
U have a smiley face too
5:30 minute? Name of Mozart peice please?
She mentions it: Eine Kleine Nachtmusik
5:25 BEETHOVEN
the French bow...Lord of the Ring❤❤🎉🎉
She looks like this one wizard from Harry Potter some how 😳 😅
It's the wands.
It’s like wands in harry potter
Beethoven - String Quartet No.4 in C minor, Op.18
...the difference the bow has an a particular piece of music.
inizio alla Richard Benson
I bet she could play any piece with any bow. These bows will cost more than most Ferrari won't they?
Carbon fiber: does not brake
Me: has a carbon fibre bow w a sever crack close to the tip.
So it is possible to break a carbon fiber bow, probably not as high of a risk as it is w damaging a wooden bow
Sorry about your bow :(
So stay away from modern bows 🤓
