I actually could tell the Golden Tourte really easily because it was the only one where the high notes somehow didn't hurt my ears. (Not criticism, I love violin, I just have sensitive ears and the high notes always seem to make me wince, no matter how good the playing is. Except with the Golden Tourte, magically no wincing, favorite bow ever). Similarly the cheap one was easy because the high notes hurt much more than with the Peccatte or early Tourte. And then telling the difference between there early Tourte and the Peccatte is mainly that the Peccatte sounds more... how can I put this... powerful? Yeah that feels like a good word.

no him second guessing his instincts and being wrong everytime is what makes his charm. Confidence is a curse, entertaining the thought that we might be wrong and underplaying our ego is very important for social cohesion. On the other hand, I find Eddy's mentality of winning no matter what and cheating at times very annoying and immature. I can tolerate it for the sake of the group if one of my teammates was like that on one condition: if he can rise up to challenge and carry when needed, but I find this conditional arrangement hypocritical at best thus people like that should be socialized further when they're teens before reaching the age of no return.

One would say a $100 bow is good or great and a $2000 bow is fantastic. "Good" doesn't mean a masterpiece or the best of the best. Would you say Bob Ross never made a "good" painting because Rembrandt's painting were more detailed or accurate? The existence of a better work doesn't make something not good..... Are you implying that they became TH-camrs because they were not good enough musicians ? 😅
I agree with @Łukasz Grzybowski, they're not world-class soloists, but they're still very good musicians (I encourage you to check their bio, they both won an insane amount of prizes).
But the reason why they're making TH-cam videos is not because they didn't manage to have a carrier as "regular" classical musicians.
Reason No 1 : Brett and Eddy hate auditions and competitions, and they've always thought that the classical music industry is way too serious. As they like to say: "We are serious musicians, but we are not serious people."
They were always goofing around and were low-key bored by their life in orchestra. So they decided to find a way to have fun while still being musicians.
That's how they created TwoSet, that's why they quit their job in orchestra, and that's how they came up with the idea of a classical comedy show.
Reason No 2 : Their purpose has always been to reach out to as many people as possible, especially the young generation, to show that classical music is still relevant and that everybody can have fun while enjoying fine music. They understood that social media was the best way to reach that goal, hence why they've always been very active not only on TH-cam, but also on Facebook, Instagram, etc...
And it's obvious that their strategy has paid off, since many people as yourself got interested in classical music, or saw their interest for it "reignited" (to quote your words) thanks to their videos. 😊

I think great violinists will practise excerpts from all staple concertos almost every day along with scales/exercises plus their next-to-be-performed pieces. Czardas is a great piece to initially test a bow or violin because it "wakes up" the instrument. Also something with sustained chords like Bach's Chaconne. Then legato passages that cross strings which can basically be found in any concerto.
I digress: so mainly Czardas and Massenet's "Meditation" are all there in muscle memory for any violinist who played standard repertoire as a youngster, and it's easy to play when put on the spot.

    @liamnevilleviolist1809 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

So I'm proud to say I invested in one of two available Tourtes and both were NOT as overpriced as this one...
I had the option to buy the one I chose outright for $530k AUD (not the best option for me) or I could pay instalments (and also payments contributing to insurance is mandatory!).
So mine is an original stick with original gold faceplate, but the frog and screw/adjuster were made by Pajeot (since someone had "harvested" the bow for it's beautiful gold and ivory frog, GGRRRRRRR!!!". At least bringing the ivory into Australia and then travelling later would've been an issue! So I'm glad that things panned out that way.
Anyway so that is why the price tag fell from around $610k to $530k. The collector/seller said: "I would definitely NEVER put an extra $100k on top of my $610k price tag because the bow is honestly not worth that high a value, it really would just scare away any clients. Generally when looking for a great Tourte (not mint, mind you) most people have $500k set aside and that's a very acceptable amount. It is wrong to value it so highly especially when trying to sell it. If it went to auction and insanely keen bidders ended up going to $800k or $900k then we can't really argue with that final selling price. It is what it is in that world!"
Insurance companies won't insure a bow based on what *could* be fetched at auction potentially. That would just be stupid. You can actually see the hesitation in confirming the (overly) high price on the owner's face at 2:23 and he quickly deflects to an anecdote about where a high price came up in a French auction. That's a bit sneaky in my opinion. A good clever businessman there ;)
So I don't know if the above prices in the video are in AUD or USD, but certainly $530k only equates to about $402k USD.
I can see the golden period bow in the video selling for $700 easily. Also it's extremely odd to put an exact $700k figure on two very different examples of Tourtes. Consider the price of a golden period Strad to one of his earliest works or his last handful of violins made... the prices are all over the place, definitely not the same by quite a lot.
I hope to post a video of my bow soon to my channel :) I just want to get great cameras and microphones in first! The video here sounds a bit like it was recorded on an iPhone almost... but at least in essence the beauty of the bows, the violin, and Eddy's technique comes across well anyway!
    Great video!

Cool! Hadn't thought about the feel, balance, or flex in a bow before. But can totally relate about personal style, cause it's kind of the same when choosing a racquet (or bat, or stick, etc) in a sport.

This was great. It is very clear that a good bow is equally important as a good violin. Also Benny was right: Brett s playing is extra beautiful on a Strad.

Some Dude I was in music in year 7, some kid just chucked a clarinet when he couldn't play it. The teacher was absolutely mortified, as someone who used to play, so was I.

Don't do it! My cello alone is worth 10 times what my car is. Add the Paul Jombar bow and it's 13 times what my car is worth, and that's my cheap cello. Can you imagine what I drive like when I have my cello in the car? The paranoia about what could happen is overwhelming at times. Not good.
