I found my father when I was 22. He was a Vietnam vet who never really recovered from the war. One night, we were up late and he pulled out this battered old Epiphone and proceeded to play "Angel From Montgomery" and I found something in my old man that I could connect to. When I saw John Prine play in Asheville a few years back, and he played Angel, I fell apart right there in my seat; a forty year old man crying like a baby. Thank you John.
Shattered by the news that the truly great, irreplaceable John Prine has passed. Of all the singer/songwriters that blossomed out of the late 60s, John was the one who's music touched my deepest emotions. Has there really, ever been a better song than this? RIP to a singular craftsman........
Had a dream last night that I was able to see my Uncle that passed away a few years ago and I was unable to attend the funeral. He was one of the nicest people this world has ever known....I woke up and had to find this song....Thank you for every joke and smile you ever gave me Uncle Winfred Taylor.
I've been listening to and singing this song for over 40 years now. Thank you for that. Our love and prayers go out to you John. Hold on. Please fight this COVID-19. Peace, love and health be with you Brother. ✌💞🎶🙏 KEH 🇨🇦
You are the shit, John. Played Clay Pigeons for my husband's send off cause he loved your music so much, tribute band (Bruised Orange) honors your gift to the human race.
Original songwriters are the only ones that can give any sense to what the song was intended to mean when they perform it. A song with out the performance from the author is just a poem. Thanks, Prine is fantastic here!
I really like your post. I have known a couple of those cases, people, as Tom Petty put it, "I saw you dancing all alone, I heard you singing to yourself." If one is privileged enough to have met one of these genuine American people - their about all gone now, like Mother Maybelle Carter, one might realize at some point that it is all that old post Civil War pain that so few realize is coming through to haunt. Southerners like Prine show it with every part of their being.
Praying for you, John Prine. I was just plain thrilled to hear you play in Chattanooga several years ago. And was not at all surprised when you let us know your hands had also touched the Perfect Country & Western Song. Godspeed to you bud. My dear friend Mike turned me onto your tunes, he had once been a small college campus deejay in the 60's, and often got reprimanded for playing the "wrong" records.
God bless John Prine, he and all the other folk artists is what brought this country together with good hearted music and life hard lyrics he is a reall american...
If you want to find a GREAT song just look at how many times it has been covered by other artists unknown or well-known. This song will live FOREVER. As will John Prine' songs.
What great lyrics There's flies in the kitchen I can hear 'em there buzzing And I ain't done nothing since I woke up today. How the hell can a person go to work in the morning And come home in the evening and have nothing to say.
ive loved him for years.....Prine is one of the greats I rank hm up there with the best songwriters ever.....hes a story teller a picture painter in three minutes and 100 words and 5 chords he will touch yer soul.....
I grew up listening to John Prine. Words cannot express how much I admire his songwriting talents, and how much I look up to him for all he's had the courage to say.
Rest in peace John.....a true genius......by simply being a man of the people. Someone said it earlier, his songs were so good, anybody could sing them and they sounded right.
One of the Best... If you like (love) John Prine, and haven't heard of Steve Goodman - give him a listen too, same era, similar style: authentic sweet sad folk stories. (I can't believe anyone disliked this!!) Great Song.
I LOVE THE AUDIENCE! .But what is stunning 'this time' is the crazy best accoustic to frame the mona lisa. the michelangelo. the band, the feelings in each musician.. we cant believe how lucky we are.. we get to hear this and see him in small towns and bigger ones. (and come home in the evening..) Life has some fine points.. John is one fine 'case' in point.. thanks for such a great clear video share!
love...love ...love this!!!!! Brings back memories from the good days and times my now ex husband and I had back in our early years together. Bittersweet.
Agreed. I'm just discovering (re-discovering? He was probably there in the background forgotten somewhere, but TH-cam has brought him to the foreground for me ) him and this song, and "Hello in there" are sheer genius.
I never heard the lyrics more clearly than in this simple version of the song. I've heard Bonnie Raitt do it, and Susan Tedeschi, and they're great. But I'm so impressed with the way they sing the song that some of the words just go by unnoticed. Brine's delivery makes every lyric land. No surprise, since he wrote it. A great song.
John Prine is from Chicago, in the suburbs. But his grandparents were from Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, the setting for John's classic "Paradise". So... a "northerner" by chance with a southern soul. :D
Cool video. His guitar player Jason Wilber is really good,I got the chance to meet him one time, when I went to a JP concert and he's a nice guy. he writes his own songs and stuff
Wonderfully beautiful. The mandoln, or whatever that instrument is, & the slides adds so much. I love him and Bonnie singing this song, but WOW this is Great!!!! This is my favorite song of his, but it speaks to 20 years of lonliness in a 290 year marriage. I cried the first time I heard this. I would hear a few words ...nothing to talk about. This song helped give me the courage to finally leave. What a powerful song. Thank you so very much for this version!!! It is so beautiful!
In 2009 I saw Niel Young, Joel Plaskett, Disturbed, John Prine, AC/DC and The Stone Temple Pilots. John was the best, of all, and none of those shows disapointed either trust me. Hope he comes back to Saint John.
BTW I was at his and Leo Kotke's concert tonight held in Hershey, Pa. at the Hershey Theater. John played for 2 1/2 hrs to a packed house. We sat in the second row and it was an excellent concert. Someone is in error on this page by saying the Hershey Theater is in Baltimore.
One Of My All Time Favorites Had the pleasure to see him 4or 5 years ago in south Bend In.. Up close and personal. He has so many great song and every one from the Beatles, ELVIS. and The Stones have done them

My Prayer tonight..."Dear God, save me me a spot on that cloud while Steve and John tune up.."

Prayers that you get past COVID19 John. We need you around.

I've listened to this song so many times, I've lost count. John Prine was so good. We really miss him...
Wow. This is better than the album version. I just heard this recording for the first time and I’m blown away.
Original songwriters are the only ones that can give any sense to what the song was intended to mean when they perform it. A song with out the performance from the author is just a poem. Thanks, Prine is fantastic here!
gone but your songs live on ..spirits are in the clouds..R.I.P. John Prine .amen
Love how the raucous revelers are calmed and almost hypnotized as the song progresses.
Such a great song and a great performance. The guy playing the slide guitar is a great player.
John Prine should be among the next group of Kennedy Center honorees.
John is a poetic first, beautiful verses, meaningful thoughts,...and the guitar is an after-thought. He's in my heart forever.
This is the best version……..
I think John Prine is one of the most underrated singer/songwriters of his and our time.
Oh, man. John Prine is the best of the best.
I really like your post. I have known a couple of those cases, people, as Tom Petty put it, "I saw you dancing all alone, I heard you singing to yourself." You RULE John. Great to meet you at Carney's in LA............such a normal guy; just buyin' a burger. Right on.
Long time Fan.
He wrote such a beautiful, simple song. Everybody who covers it does it so well. Impossible for this song to come out bad.
I agree - It's a great song. I saw the Tedeschi Trucks band cover this song at the Byron Bay Bluesfest (Auistralia). Brought tears to one's eyes.
This is my favorite song of John’s. RIP. Another poet like you will never be seen.
one of, if not THE best singer songwriters of all time, hope to see him again some day.
This is the best version......
Praying for you, John Prine. I was just plain thrilled to hear you play in Chattanooga several years ago. And was not at all surprised when you let us know your hands had also touched the Perfect Country & Western Song.
Godspeed to you bud. My dear friend Mike turned me onto your tunes, he had once been a small college campus deejay in the 60's, and often got reprimanded

Oh my goodness! He evokes tears and laughter at the same time. The mark of a serious poet. Amazing!
Amazing so ng
God bless John Prine, he and all the other folk artists is what brought this country together with good hearted music and life hard lyrics he is a reall american...
8 dislikes? WTF? Have you lost your soul?
JP makes your heart smile and cry at the same time.....
This guy is a poet.
If you want to find a GREAT song just look at how many times it has been covered by other artists unknown or well-known. This song will live FOREVER. As will John Prine' songs.

I am so thankful we have been blessed with such a fantastic song writer. I am in awe of John's talent.
I grew up listening to John Prine. Words cannot express how much I admire his songwriting talents, and how much I look up to him for all he's had the courage to say.
Stunning. NEVER EVER gets old. NEVER OLD.
Thanks.
I have loved this song for years. Thank you, John Prine
Fair winds and a following sea Johnny. You were, and are, the best. RIP❤️
Splendid version of John Prine doing one of his best songs. He stings the heart.
(And, nice slide work on the side.)
I don't know what it is about John Prine but it seems like he's singing straight to you individually. Great video, and even a better song.
One of the world's best songs. Thank you John
Speechless as to what is displayed here. When it is beyond greatestness it ascends to the level of legendary.
Whenever you need some inspiration or help through something put a John Prine album on.. Works everytime.
Hell...a great musician and a great song...that says it all...
John P. is one of our American treasures. No ifs/ands/buts.
Rest in peace John.....a true genius......by simply being a man of the people. Someone said it earlier, his songs were so good, anybody could sing them and they sounded right.
Every song he sings brings me to tears. He is amazing!

This is one of my favorite songs. I literally can feel heaven as this song is sung; why do you speak to my soul John?
This song has soul and heart as well. Simple words + simple chords = extrodinary magic.
Thanks JP.
You said what I couldn't . Well done man!
Happy New Year! This needs to be treasured; it’s the best version.
I agree!
John Prime you ARE the man!!!!
And God Bless Jason Wilber!!!!!!!
Two incredible talents!!!!! Great American Artists!!!!!
Feel better John, we all love you!
love...love ...love this!!!!! Brings back memories from the good days and times my now ex husband and I had back in our early years together. Bittersweet.
I absolutely love this song, and all forms of folk music.
He played this last night in Red Bank, NJ, what an experience it was to be so close to such an amazing musician!!
The only artist doing a girly song...how great is that. Respect.
R.I.P. John Prine. You'll live forever in the music you've left us.
Agreed. I'm just discovering (re-discovering? He was probably there in the background forgotten somewhere, but TH-cam has brought him to the foreground for me ) him and this song, and "Hello in there" are sheer genius.

What a wonderful song.
John gives you every word in his delivery.
Excellent. Love his slide player - perfect break.
This song is first in my "playlist" for a reason.
John Prime's music is not "country music". IT IS AMERICA!!! America in all that is great and bad about it. It is America for what IT IS !!!
John Prine is from Chicago, in the suburbs. But his grandparents were from Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, the setting for John's classic "Paradise". So... a "northerner" by chance with a southern soul. :D
"The years just flow by Like a broken down dam.".You betchum red rider! Cheers!
Can't wait to see him tonight in Cincinnati!!
I might be mistaken, but this man is grossly underrated.
Cool video. His guitar player Jason Wilber is really good,I got the chance to meet him one time, when I went to a JP concert and he's a nice guy. he writes his own songs and stuff

this song will go in history
..........incredibly beautiful. Thank you John.
John Prine of Maywood,IL is recognized
as the father of the Texas singer/ song
writer genre.
I'm crushed. We've lost John...
great song. was one of dad's favorites.
This song has magic.
my favourite song ....and singer.... and guitarist.... and songwriter.... and person....

J'adore cette chanson !
Like Jimmy Buffet sais so eloquently when speaking of our lives. "Some of it's magic and some of it's tragic. God Bless
he owns it so he sings it!!
As close a perfection gets to the soul.
Pure perfection. Thanks John.
Love John Prine's stories in songs
This performance reminds me of Tom Waits singing "Train Song". Such a beautiful and heartfelt mood.
I'm seeing him in may 2009 at the becon theatre in manhattan.

'to believe in this livin'.. whoa this is true, make me one of those angels too
Love John Prine. So wonderful.
