I recently inherited my grandpas two Mculloch saws. One being a little smaller can't reverse size. The other this 650. I need to find a chain for it then see if I can get It running. They don't make stuff like they used it.

Hey Paul, yes these old saws are really well built. Check out BillyRay - He owns a bunch of these old saws. www.youtube.com/@BuckinBillyRaySmith/videos

1978-85, 60cc. Good saws, far better quality than the saws they sell today.. Very heavy compared to today's saws. We treasure our 650, a powerful, quite noisy saw with bags of torque.......

Yes, it has tons of power. I love the sound.

I'm glad I saw this. I forgot about that high rpm lever in front of the throttle. I kept hitting the gas when I'd start it. I have one that I bought about 20 years ago. Very forgiving. I think I let it sit for a few years once with fuel and it still started easily. It's a great saw as long as the drive gear doesn't get plugged up with shavings, enough to bind the chain. I think I need to adjust the oiler. I was thinking about doing a video on it just because you don't see them much.

It's a shame about choke lever. Hopefully you have that installed and using the 650 as it should be ... Nice find

Buggers of things to get started, heavy because they were made of metal, have plenty of power/torque and OK once you get used to their idiosyncrasies. Why didn't you demonstrate it's cutting ability on a decent log? Check out Buckin Billy's site for how to review a chainsaw; he's a McCulloch fanatic.

When I was a kid, dad would only buy PM 610s - same basic saw. They're unique. Heavy for what they are, don't rev particularly high and when they idle right- "ding...d...ding ding....ding....ding".
Ours never liked hot starts when it was really run hard through a full tank. Dad always liked a saw with an absurdly short bar which made them even more tiring to use. Dad's answer about the hot start behavior was literally to cut with the throttle feathered, extending the time standing over the saw even longer.
Mac says 4 horsepower, but my first saw was a husky 350 and despite the lower power, it was faster through wood and a whole lot lighter.
