For station announcements Sydney's felt classic (as i live there) , Melbournes felt like a railway terminal, Brisbane sounded casual, Perth's sounded like an airport transit, and Adelaide sounds like Sydney's but crappy
Nice analysis :)
I suspect the playback software in Adelaide is a previous generation, since the Melbourne announcements sounded jerky and robotic like that about a decade ago.
even though I live in Adelaide I would still agree that the Adelaide has the crappy male announcement.
@@ktreagus Sounds like it!
Don't bag Adelaide metro
If u don't live here
As an Adelaidian, the sounds for Adelaide announcements are from the much older and outdated trains, our new electric trains have much more appealing announcements, similar to those in Perth and Melbourne.
Ah, I didn't realise that, thanks for the heads up :)
Melbourne has 3-4 different types of announcements onboard the trains due to the 4 different rolling stock types found across the network. Personally, the updated announcements in the Siemens trains are by far my favourite!
Yeah, I don't mind the new Siemens announcements!
New siemens announcements are a crime the chime for every announcement annoys me
New Siemens announcements are disgusting. They all sound basically the same but clearly the X'Trapolis announcements are the best!
@@JamesJackson. i dont mind the chime existing on it, my only problem is that it is the 3 tone chime for the platform annoucments in NSW
The Brisbane one is so casual and calming. The Sydney one makes me feel like I’m in good hands. I like all of them actually. The last time I got the train was from Brisbane to Helensvale to go to Movie World and they announced all the information on where to go to get the theme park bus services before arriving.
Nice!
An interesting approach. Note that QR wins the prize for the most long-winded, but nothing can equal the barrage of blabber on the Gold Coast trams! (Not covered here)
Absolutely! I believe some QR trains have even longer announcements indicating where the door buttons are located.
@@kdpt8376 it is a few years since I have caught a train here, but will one day before too long. I have no doubt that you are right.
@@kdpt8376 those trains indicate the buttons that do are the annoying NGRs that Queensland has.
@@boblolet1825 not a fan of the NGRs
@@kdpt8376 neither am I but they are the largest fleet QR has in the network
QLD in general has very verbose announcements, such as the GC light rail and the totally unnecessary "if this is your station, prepare to disembark"
Yeah, it's a bit too much sometimes!
I like it
If u go on the NGR trains, it also says “Customers are reminded the exit buttons are located in the middle of the doors” which is also pretty unnecessary as everyone would probably know where it is.
QR train drivers also tell you over the speakers which side the platform will be on. "the platform is on the aaaahahhhhhh.......... left". They should just flash the door buttons to tell you which side the platform is.
Didn't know that!
As a regular sydney train commuter who just spent a week at brisbane i was so surprised at how bad the station announcements were and how unclear the voice was compared to Sydney. Although there were somethings i enjoyed personally sydney is my favourite
I do remember some announcements being quite unclear when I was there a few years back!
omg the as soon as the sydney one went deja vu just hit me like that. i have to listen to that exact announcement like everyday
I felt like that when editing the Melbourne ones. Thanks for watching :)
There are different trains that run in Melbourne and some of these sounds are different depending on which train you're riding on. Also different stations can sometimes have different announcements. This was a cool video!
Thanks! I have a video comparing the sounds of different trains in Melbourne which you might like th-cam.com/video/-iWcW5aMMy4/w-d-xo.html
The Sydney train announcements are crystal clear and easy to understand, the voice is pleasant unlike the TTS some other cities use, I find the on board announcements to be tolerable and less irritating than Brisbane and I also love how the station announcements sound.
IMO Sydney is the main character when it comes to trains. Every other state has single decks but Sydney’s has double, which also have reversible seats.
Didn't know Sydney trains have reversible seats!
Sydney with trains, Melbourne with trams
‘Next station Cannington. Change at Cannington for all stations Beckenham to Armadale.’ Second half in red text. Best announcement ever, my local station. Real shame it’s temp closed 😭

Doors Closing: Melbourne = Perth
Most Favourite = Brisbane
2nd Favourite = Melbourne
3rd Favourite = Perth
4th Favourite = Sydney
Least Favourite: Adelaide
Nice! I'd swap Brisbane and Melbourne, but I agree with the rest of your preferences :)
i can’t be the only one who loves all the voices on the platforms and trains in melbourne, shame that they are getting rid of all the old comeng and siemens for the hcmt, as clean as they are they don’t have the nostalgic feeling
Agree, comeng are my favorite.
They aren't getting rid of the Siemens
Queensland Rail has my all time most nostalgic train announcements pick by far 😂 whenever I mimmick Ross's voice to my mates, they want to shoot me because of how repetitive it can be lol
1:27 "...clarence park goodwood Adelaide Showground! mile end then adelaide"
Does sound like that!
Real travel experience:
I put ear pugs in prior to travelling on Brisbane trains. The number of announcements is insufferable,,We get door button announcements, public health announcements, security announcements, prepare to disembark announcements, take your belongings announcements, then the guard chimes in and repeats many of the announcements...I can't stand much more .I will often go by bus ....
Ear plugs sound like a good option. I'm not a fan of buses but the number of train announcements do sound annoying!
They have actually improved it recently, they got rid of the "customers are reminded the exit buttons are located in the middle of the doors"
The Public health announcement has gone too
Guards still announce which side the doors are on and which station the train is approaching, which is annoying.
The prepare to disembark announcements, I guess makes sense at major stations but not EVERY station. At least the take your belonging and security announcements are only done when coming into Fortitude valley from the north, and Roma Street from the south.
@@pwhnckexstflajizdryvombqug9042 that's good!
Real travel experience .
Melbourne on board announcements were few compared to the insufferable amount of announcements Brisbane people have to endure for a train trip..I can't stand much more of the Brisbane rail audio abuse of passengers.
(Brisbane train guards also repeat many of the same announcements..really bad after a while )
Absolutely! I'm used to the Melbourne ones, so when I caught the Brisbane Airtrain I immediately noticed the announcement overload.
Prior to around 2018/19, the onboard announcements on Brisbane trains were actually pretty good. There were only two announcements, one indicating the next station, and one indicating what station you're at, and they were very brief. Once the NGR's came along, that's when we had to have 3x 45-60 second announcements for every station, and the announcements are always on the most max volume setting available. Gives me a headache thinking about it.
@@iwenttobunnings7868 ah makes sense! No wonder I don't remember those long announcements. Last time I rode a train in Brisbane was in 2015.
i also remember the NGR trains had the unnessasary message for where the train buttons are, they might have been good for maybe 6 months to a year but they still have those announcements and quite annoying, the visibility of the buttons is good enough.@@iwenttobunnings7868
Interesting. It also sounds like that the QLD trains are the same type as the ones in Perth. Thank you for giving credit. If you need to use any of my footage for any of your future videos you can do so
I believe some QLD trains were made by the same company as the Perth ones.
Thanks!
@@kdpt8376 Yes I believe the companies are bombardier, downer EDI and walkers
The 60 series, IMU 160 and SMU 260, were indeed made by the same company who made the B-series, likely exactly the same but with state-defined modifications and changes.
@@user-three-four-nine Yes, I figured that, also South Australia has the exact same trains as the B series as well, and as you said, state modified designed
@@kdpt8376Perth's A and B series sets were built alongside QRs trains in Maryborough. The A/B sets were done before their QR counterparts.
Melbourne feels so classic because the announcement gets to the point
So true!!
The Sydney one takes me back, especially the stops going to Blacktown. I like the Melbourne and Queensland announcements too.
Nice! Thanks for watching :)
Adelaide makes you wnt to scratch your eyes out !
Agree!!
tbh the 3000 dmu announcements are depressing to hear, i would understand if they wanted a monotone voice for the announcements but not depressing monotone voice.. like come on..
Thanks for this I've never seen something like this!
No worries :)
Great little clip kdpt
Cheers!
Thanks for the shoutout. It's amazing that you can actually get a clip without me narrating in the background haha
No worries, thanks for contributing! I spent many hours on your channel trying to find a suitable clip lol
@kdpt sorry abt my style of videos, as I just like to do the PAs at the same time with the system
But nice video, hope you will have a subscriber boom
@@justinmaster86 don't apologise, I do the same thing although not out loud, I enjoy your videos! Thanks heaps :)
melbournes so classic
some of this audio of this video is also too glitchy and i promise you melbourne has good trains and it has around 7 and some went withdrawn from service life also this video contains diffrent trains we play for melbourne
yeah I like Melbourne trains
what was i yapping about💀
If we all have the best of what each states does best for trains on one or all states, I will be happy
Agreed!
I liked it, but I’m just used to the Perth Announcements, especially the doors closing. Our trains are loud as you could hear, but the newer B-series is a bit quieter then the older A-Series
I do remember the trains being quite loud compared to Melbourne's! Thanks for watching :)
the metro announcement "the next station is carnegie" is not the real melb announcement. it says "now arriving at: ____"
the only time it says "the next station is" when its arriving at its terminus e.g "the next station is: lilydale - this train will terminate at lilydale"
The HCMT announces "the next station is..." at every station :)
@@kdpt8376 yes, but the xtrap, comeng and nexas uses "now arriving at"
@@jwoshywoshy I've included both!
Oh wow Brisbane's door closing announcements sound like the old sydney ones. Miss them lol.
Didn't realise that Sydeny's old announcements were like this!
Who is behind the robotic voice of Sydney train ? Really clear.
Not sure, would like to know too!
Taylor Owens
The electric trains doors closing in Adelaide sounds different to the diesel sand voice but the singing that Perth had
Interesting!
I love the sounds
Me too!!
Adelaide’s announcements differ between the 3000 class DMU and the 4000 class EMU but only slightly
They're very similar indeed!
Great compilation! I ❤ it. I enjoy Sydney best possibly because Im the most familiar with.
Sydneys is the most pleasant, Melbourne woman slightly more cheerful , Perth sounds too formal, poor Adelaide has an insistent man reading a tad slowly.
Thanks! Agree with your analysis :)
How is "too formal" an issue lol?
Adelaide platform announcer is kinda like scottish platforms announcer because it says it calls at every station to thr destination 1 by 1
Interesting!!
@@kdpt8376 Sometimes it Says in scotland if there are multiple operators serving that station it will say The Next train the arrive at Platform ??? Is the 10 02 ??? Service to Edinburgh Waverly Calling at Haymarket and Edinburgh Waverley this train is formed of 4 coaches

as a western australian, i find it weird having a male and female announcer
Adelaide Metro announcements the same as the Sydney announcements because I know the V line announcements used the older Sydney voice
Cool!
For me, Adelaide has the best on-board train announcements. A lot of comments complain about how bad or cringey Adelaide's voice announcement is, but once you hear it many times, it will start to grow on you. This statement might be controversial as not everyone will agree with me, and that's fine as we're allowed to have our own preferences by engaging in a civil discussion.
Other Australian cities like Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane have the generic accent for Australian English. Adelaide's on-board sound sets it part from the rest, and in my own opinion, it's the most unique of all.
Thanks for commenting and for sharing your thoughts. Adelaide certainly has the most unique announcements!
Adelaide used to have a much better female in-train announcer, don’t know why they replaced her with the current drip
I never heard them, but I bet they would be better than the current announcements.
Please stand behind the yellow saftey line untill the train has stopped
This is a Brisbane city and Springfield train stopping all stations to Springfield Central ' the next station is Roma street customers for ferney grove Caboultere sunshine airport or doomben lines please change trains here
Roma street station mind the gap

They certainly are quite verbose!
brisbane takes the cake it sounds soo perfect
I don't mind Brisbane's announcements, but some are a bit verbose.
I was the developer of the Perth station announcement systems. It's not changed much in 30 years! Your recording is awful! The reason my system has endured is because the text and voice model are very understandable. When I introduced it I got commendations from both deaf and blind associations because they could finally understand the announcements. The key was to use a neutral accented voice model with zero 'personality' exaggerations and to speak at a measured rate.
Thanks for your comment and insight! Some of the recordings aren’t great as the clips are taken from longer videos which didn’t focus on capturing announcements. Well done on the development! Nice to hear that the system has lasted so long :)
Thanks for your effort. The Perth train announcements are really good. Clear and gets to the point. Are the voices recordings of actual people or computer synthesis?
@@thompsonmatthew It's all recordings of individuals saying a variety of phrases and sentences that are then stitched together to make the complete announcement. The original script I wrote used phrasing so that there was a natural voice break between each segment. E.g. I used the phrase "in two minutes" rather than "in" "two" "minutes". So it is "Passengers for Armadale" "your next train departs from platform 1" "In two minutes". This trades off the amount of recording required with the obvious mismatched word-level assembly some other systems use.
With modern AI it's possible they generate the speech synthetically, but even if they are they are still using my original script with very minor additions.
@@minxythemerciless thanks for sharing this info :)
