I also grew up in Guangzhou and this is such a great representation of it - with both the old and the new. Thanks for making this video. Looking forward to more Guangzhou content :)
Enjoy your videos very much. Visited Guangzhou many times, and have fond memories. First visited the city in 1990s, just when the old small houses were tear down to make way for the high rises. In the 2000s, the city was booming but it was unsafe. Then the city seemed to have a rebirth in the early 2010s and became very safe.
Having grown up there since 1999 and left for US in 2010 it was an unforgettable 11 years of my life. I also lived just steps away from the first McDonald’s in Tiyudong and spend most of my time around Grand View mall ice skating and going to movies up on the 7th floor. So glad to have someone like you also enjoyed the city but from another background.
As a 35 year old who was born in Guangzhou, but left to live in London when I was 6 years old, this felt like a glimpse of what might have been had I stay. It's been almost 10 years since I've been in Guangzhou, this is like a prompt for me to go back. Thank you Alysa for sharing your important rites of passage, I'm glad this city gave you these wonderful memories and may it always be a special place for you.
Really enjoyed the format of this video. Guangzhou sounds like a fascinating city. I had the privilege of living in Shanghai for 5 months. Such an amazing city. Knowing the language would have helped a lot, even though a lot of people spoke English.
Beautiful touching story, it's obvious the deep emotional effect your pa had on you, & the inspiring first kiss & the candid intoxicating experience you had, I can see the wonderland connection in your name. Happy the man who marries you.
whew. Allergy season. My eyes are tearing up for some reason. This was the best presentation of a city I have seen. It was sweet to see the many memories attached to so many wonderful places.
When one person treasures her/his memories so much, of course this guy is so much into this land and she/he must be a person with warm and kind heart, which I firmly believe :) I have the same feelings, for my hometown, this country and this planet. 其诗闻,加油!
This is a beautiful video showcasing the journey of both Guangzhou and you over the years. I may not live in Guangzhou, but I have family who grew up there and still live there. When you began talking about Shamian Island, I recognised it immediately, since it was one of the places I visited on my trip in 2016. My mother also worked for the White Swan Hotel, which is on the island as well. Well done for expressing both your story and the story of Guangzhou so wonderfully. :)
This is very true (unfortunately). I was born in South Africa, where I still live, and cannot speak Cantonese (my Dad’s background), Hakka (my late mom’s background) or Mandarin. As I’ve progressed beyond midlife, my interest in my ancestor’s origins and in China in general has really increased. I visited China only once in 2007, and would love to visit again one day. So much of the videos on TH-cam show me how breathtakingly fast China has developed since I was last there. I am sure I will not recognise some of the places I visited last time (Xian, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong province). What a time to be alive.
Uh.. No. Plenty of places in Asia have vibrant (and large) Chinese diaspora. In fact, some of these places in South East Asia have kept alive Chinese traditional customs that are even 'more Chinese' than in China.
My blood is infected with their dna via my father but I need nithing from the chinesw species. The only things they produced that are admirable to me are; the I-Ching, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and a few other cool characters, followed by the kungfu culture and wuxia fiction but mostly because both inspired akira toriyama's making up Dragonball from 1985 to 1995. Everything else is negligible and even revolting aka intellectual instead of intelligent reflection of Sapience.

You know, Alysa. I was born in Guandzhou too. Now I am a medical professional in an international city not too far away. Just like what you show in the video, Guangzhou always occupies an important place in my heart. The places you went to in your childhood, I went there too. 😊 It seems that we have some form of attachment just because of this wonderful city.
So as my story. I was born, raised and currently still work and live here, although there were one or two years I stayed in the US and other countries from time to time. I can speak three major dialogues in Guangdong because my parents are from different parts of the province, which gives me the advantage to get a unique perspective of the Cantonese culture and Cantonese people, my culture and my people, so as your culture and your people. I am very touched by your story. My father used to have a major liver disease when I was little, it nearly destroyed my not-so-wealthy family, but my mother managed to get through it with the helps from her six sisters and all other relatives. My family used to live north of the city where there was some time that I was too young to stay home alone, so my mother would commute by keeping me aside. My early memories of the city are those red taxi cars, motorcycle taxis, old-schooled white and blue buses, the wooden seats and blue stained windows of the buses and of course the sweaty bus drivers at summer that always yell at you. Sometimes my mother had to beg them for allowing her to carry some oversized belongings from work on the bus. But that all ended after we had a new van to do the job. It’s interesting that you mentioned the book center, because as a middle school student I used to go to there a lot, sometimes looking for English books too because I love learning English, we might had seen each other from time to time, but it is really cool when I know you in YT now but totally had no idea back then.🤔
Well done Alysa, really moving! Being a Guangzhou native and despite having spent half of my life so far abroad, Guangzhou will be my hometown forever.

Growing up in Guangzhou must've been one epic adventure! 🇨🇳 I'm moving back to Guangzhou next week, and hearing stories like this reminds me why it's such a special place-full of memories, culture, and endless inspiration.
Loved your tour through the city you grew up in, taking us where you had so many of your life’s milestones. Keep it up !
Alysa, thanks for your sharing. Wish you have a happy life in Guangzhou.
一直在广州工作到现在,虽然广州是一线城市,但是相对其他一线城市来说是相当宜居的,是一个会让人留恋产生感情的城市,快速变化的同时希望可以保留广州粤韵广州味。
This is such a beautiful video, the story, the music, the voice over…
Very touching and beautifully explained story about the city you love. You take your audience with you on an emotional journey. That is great.👍👍👋👋👋👋
I love your videos! I am also from Guangdong ❤
Wow, I was genuinely moved by this video! That last line in Cantonese? It got me all teary-eyed🥲. I've been a TH-camr for a year now, still honing my filmmaking skills. Dreaming of the day I can create content this impactful. Kudos, Alysa!❣❣❣
Then why don't you put all your money in China mainland stocks? :) give me an honest answer.

Excellent video! Please keep on the good work ❤
Awwwww... absolutely adorable, thank you for sharing yr life moments with us in this amazing place. I myself look forward moving to Zhuhai in a yr for retirement ( well very early retirement ) from Canada. the World and China needs more positive people like you. I always find it is heart warming to see a non Chinese person somehow can appreciate China, its culture and people more than many Chinese. it is just to show that Everything Everywhere can be beautiful and exciting, its up to us to open our eyes to it.
Amazing story telling ❤ I was born and raised in Guangzhou and had to spent half of my life in Canada. Watching your video also makes me nostalgic because I also grew up in Tianhe in the 90s! I can’t wait to visit my hometown soon this winter, after 4 years of waiting!
Great 😊 video! Thanks 🙏
Guangzhou is one of my favorite cities! I hope I can go to visit again. I spent 8 years in China and I love it. I’m not there now but I hope to go back again soon 🔜
I was very touched. You are a wonderful person and you have wonderful memories in Guangzhou. I am proud to be with you in a part of this beautiful life of yours. 🩷I am Ayşe Nur from Turkey !
❤️❤️❤️ love you canim!
Growing up in Guangzhou, your stories testify the remarkable transformations that the city, the province and the country have gone through, thanks for posting.
I also grew up in Guangzhou and this is such a great representation of it - with both the old and the new. Thanks for making this video. Looking forward to more Guangzhou content :)
As a Cantonese who moved to Australia this video brings back so many memories.😭 Thank you for the amazing video.
Beautiful video. Thank you.
What a touching video! Beautifully done by someone who really knows how to tell a story with a few words and beautiful pictures.
Beautiful presentation. I've never been to China. Thanks for sharing.
Really enjoyed the format of this video. Guangzhou sounds like a fascinating city. I had the privilege of living in Shanghai for 5 months. Such an amazing city. Knowing the language would have helped a lot, even though a lot of people spoke English.
Beautifully done ❤
Beautiful touching story, it's obvious the deep emotional effect your pa had on you, & the inspiring first kiss & the candid intoxicating experience you had, I can see the wonderland connection in your name. Happy the man who marries you.
whew. Allergy season. My eyes are tearing up for some reason. This was the best presentation of a city I have seen. It was sweet to see the many memories attached to so many wonderful places.
Wow, thank you!
it makes me teary, without any reason, too much mixed feelings...
Good one. keep it up. i hope to come to China to study mandarin in 2024. Was last in GZ in 2019 just before the pandemic.
Nicely done. Glad you had great memories growing up in a foreign land.
as a semi-cantonese, i admire your story and wish you all the best in future
You're probably more 'Chinese' than 99.99 % of the Chinese born out of China. Lovely story! Thanks for sharing. cheers, from Canada. 👍🏻🦉🕊
@@linyenchin6773 Shame on you for letting western propaganda to take over you. China gave the world so much and the best is yet to come.
Get well soon.❤
@@linyenchin6773 yes lin but youre a part of the problem
you're a 3rd culture kid like me! what a wonderful video!!! 🥰
If you're proud of living among us, you're ONE OF US!
I was born and raised in Guangzhou, and lived there for the first 20 years of my life. I have been living in Canada for another 20 years now.
Compared to many North American cities I have been to, Guangzhou is always home.
Appreciate your video. Very nice video editing and story-telling.
"If you're proud of living among us"
get out of my head get out of my head get out of my head get out of my head get out of my head
Same Name As Mine, LOL.
Guangzhou is a lovely place. My wife is from there and so I visit very often. It does have its nuances (like scooters overrunning sidewalks), but there is a charm to it all.
Hey Alysa, I grew up in Guangzhou for my first 18 years as a local Cantonese, and now I'm living in the US. I'm so touched by your stories, and seeing all the familiar but now distant places in your video (I've been to most of those places as well). And your Cantonese is just perfect like the natives! Looking forward to more of your stories and updates!
If shes always lived there then isnt she one of the natives?
This is Guangzhou, an amazing city to live with your family and to work . I love it!
You’re fortunate to have the opportunity to live at junction of cultural, language, global economic shift, and personal growth. Your experience is very unique, cherish that.
Hey it’s a wonderful story of Guangzhou. Thanks for sharing your story with us thou it’s sad to hear the lost of your father. Take care and do share more stories with us.
I would love to go back to China and visit it again after those 20 years. Just wondering how Clifford has changed or do I even remember the city. Great video love it ❤.
What a wonderful recollection of memories!! You have a great outlook on life and your home town!! Wish i had such clear memories of my childhood! Stay blessed and it is great knowing you.
Being a Guangzhou native and despite having spent half of my life so far abroad, Guangzhou will be my hometown forever.
amazing!!!!!!!
