It was sad hearing the story about how Smiley Burnette was down and out during the depression and Gene bought rights to a song from him (Riding down the Canyon) for $5 dollars. The song went on to be a top seller. You think a real friend would have went back and gave him a huge bonus after making so much on it. I heard Gene and Smiley talk about it in interviews as a tribute to Gene's business ability.
I grew up with Gene Autry and from an early age watched all his films and adored champion the wonder horse. My Dad has collected his albums from the age of 10 and although he is no longer able to see the films. Thanks to Google he listens to him daily..
