I watched Big Daddy Garlits, Don Prudhomme, and Shirley Muldowney race at what used to be Martin Speedway in Michigan back when I was a kid in the late '70's. It was the only actual drag race I have ever been to and I can still remember how I could feel the roar of the cars throughout my entire body. I spent many of my younger years on the infield at MIS, watching Indy and NASCAR races, but those were never up-close and personal like watching that drag race.

Anywho Don bought the three Chrysler 300 in this video at around the 27 minute mark from the family. I believe it was the black one that has a factory hemi. Been a few minutes ago since I can’t remember all the details, but memories seeing them all purttied up. Last I saw them was under a couple decades of barn dust.

Kendall Motor Oil, which was born right here in our little town of Bradford, Pennsylvania, was a sponsor of Don Garlits' racing back in the day. He brought the Swamp Rat to our 100th anniversary and fired it up. Rattled quite a few windows in town. Awesome video...thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing footage of the Don Garlits museum. I've always wanted to go there. My uncle in law was the second owner of that B5 blue 70 Challenger R/T Hemi. Sold new in my hometown of Bucyrus Ohio, ordered stripe delete and the first owner ordered the stripes for a 70 Hemi Cuda' (hockey stripe). Uncle sold it to a feller in Mansfield Ohio who knew Don. Don drove it to Fla from there. Still has somewhere around 3K miles on it.

Man a guy just loves how independence was a forgotten old relic sat for years and almost ready to be crushed.. When along came a fella who rescued the old girl had a mammoth trek home fixing it in the hotel carpark etc then the evolution to what we see now happened. Its like Independence is thanking you for the rescue.. 👌

Watching all of Derek's videos reminds me of what I had to do in my high school years around springtime. I had a 1963 1/2 Ford Galaxie 500 XL with the 390 P code. It didn't like the Nebraska deep freeze winters so I parked it in the driveway. I had to revive it in the spring with a little spray down the carb to get it to bring the thunder. Good times.

Don 's place has changed alot. My dad took me when it first opened. Was only maybe 5 normal cars . And 3 or 4 dragsters. Remember an old studebaker pick up he had with interchangeable front and rear fenders. Now I want to go again.

Big Daddy Don Garlits! He's the reason I got into racing, well that and the smell of race gas! He set his last worlds record in 2019 at the young age of 87! Let that sink in, 87 YEARS OLD, and still setting records! He is a living legend for sure!!
