  • The REAL Reason Hades Kept Meg Under His Control For So Long...| Disney's Hercules
Hades had to be one of the most charismatic villains in all of Disney history, which is probably why he was so likable despite being such a bad guy. In fact, several times throughout Hercules, it almost seemed like Hades wasn’t the actual villain at all, but instead was simply a misunderstood and mistreated sibling to the more powerful Gods. Interestingly enough, there’s actually a theory that claims Hades was the true hero of Hercules. And to make things even crazier, this theory also implies that the dark God of the Underworld had a secret motive for taking Meg’s soul that actually makes a lot of sense.

He was also just doing his job. Hades never actually lied to Hercules at any point in the movie and he did let him retrieve Meg’s soul after she had died and did tell Hercules that he would die in the process and he wasn’t wrong as it was only gaining immortality at the literal last second that saved him and helped him succeed. Hades didn’t pull any other tricks to prevent Hercules from leaving the Underworld.

I always felt like there was an older brother/younger sister kind of relationship between Hades and Meg. I mean, he never outright abused Meg, just manipulated her for his agenda and he was pretty fair with his dealings. Always gave others a chance instead of just outright killing them.

We had to learn about Greek mythology in school back in the 90s and 2000s. I remember being unable to do my assignment because it was about Zeus, and I learned he had r-worded his own sister (his canonical wife btw) who married him out of shame. He also r-worded a lot of other women. When people tell me that Hercules he is the son of Zeus, my reaction is "Yeah, him and every other idiot in greece". So, Disney did us a huge favor by rewriting the real villain, who has always been Zeus. When you look into the myth9ology (be prepared to dislike the greek gods, you've been warned. lots of r-wording, even on the floor of a goddess's throne) Hades really is more of a hero than any of the other gods

Maybe that is why Hades skulked around the party before making his presence known.
He wanted to see if Hercules was as powerful as he fear and Zeus as careless as knew knew and thought.
And seeing the kid lift Zeus so easily being praised by Zeus
As well as taking a Thunder bolt Zeus over rulling Hera in taking it away and being carefree in how Zeus threw the bolt nearing hitting many gods and goddesses until (I think) Aries deflected it into a column.
And I bet he offered when he offered the candy he expected Hercules to grab his finger because children do that all the time and see if Zeus would chastise Hercules for hurting someone else or apologize to Hades for that happening or somehow take accountability.
BUT NO instead Zeus made jokes and clearly didn't care about Hercules hurting others.

I thought Hades really wasn’t the bad guy but rather misunderstood and that he was only doing his job. Hades never actually deceived Hercules and he did give him a chance to retrieve Meg’s soul.

  • @HestiaVesta
    @HestiaVesta ปีที่แล้ว +9

1 thing about Meg and Hades specifically is he might have also tried to protect her from the other gods such as his brother thunder and nephew the Sun.
We all know Zeus and while in the movie his creating was not addressed and reckoned for Hercules it doesn't mean that he still wasn't like that but why would Hercules ask about that and why would anything tell him about that
And while Apollo isn't the same he still causes problems in his love life mostly in that often they get crushed does young or both (certain expectations so exist please see Greek Mythology for more information)
And also I have heard things that indicate he might have been protecting him from Poseidon too.
Under his aegis he can tell them to back off she's under his domain not any of their's and (reluctantly) back down.
Which may disillusion Meg more if she knew and just views him as a lame boss and the other gods as just uncaring about individuals if she doesn't know.

We can also delve into Zeus' criteria for Hercules to restore his godhood by becoming a "true hero."
When Hercules overcame adversity, saved countless people, and became a positive role model for the masses to aspire to, this wasn't enough to satisfy Zeus, and instead of explaining things and instructing him, you know, that thing fathers are supposed to do for their kids, he peaces out of the conversation and leaves Hercules confused and frustrated.
The action which ultimately makes Hercules a 'true hero' and restores his godhood? Self-sacrifice; altruism. Giving up his life for the wellbeing of another. It happened to be the woman he loved, but when Zeus explained the nature of his 'true heroism', he described Meg as "that girl." Implying that sacrificing his life for *any* other person would have worked. For Zeus, being a 'true hero' doesn't mean doing good and having integrity, it means self-sacrifice.

Yes Zeus would have died in the Titan attack. But the Titans would have killed EVERYONE ON EARTH if not reined in. Interesting theory, but there is still one glaring hole for me. If the theory is at least mostly correct, then why was he planning to release the Titans? Even if he did think that a Zues raised Hercules was a bad thing he was still planning on releasing the Titans with or without Hercules being born and still would attack the other gods and release the Titans with full knowledge of the danger and devastation that would come from that. If you can explain why he would release the Titans to keep the balance between the Mortal and Immortal world, then I will be more willing to believe the theory.

I think Zeus did fear Hercules overthrowing him as Super Cool God King Emperor of Everything which is why he made Hercules prove himself a true hero and when he asked for a life with Meg he stripped away his immortality rather than give the new motorized Meg her own immortality after all she proved the size of her heart being big and heroic by LITERALLY DYING for Hercules true under her servitude with Hades she was immortal but she knew she was as Hades himself put "off the hook" she knew now death was possible and still gave her life for Hercules
So by the speciality of True Hero Zeus gave to Hercules she passed and was able to gain Immortality and goddesshood too.
Instead Zeus feared being usurped in the future made his son mortal again.

This is revisionist. reason being, a lot of the gods have dominion over a lot of natural aspects and they aren't as destructive about it. there is no reason to think that Hercules would have been destructive if he have had his full powers. The reason he was destructive as a mortal is because his parents had no means to get him to control his strength as it was godly. no way hades actually cares about mortals on that level, that's wishful thinking.
