"Thanks for the engagement, you idiots". A great line that I think perfectly encapsulates Maso's opinion of his self proclaimed "meddling internet success"
There are so many episodes of this show that are, at least, memorable. Like the one where they fight actual Cthulu. The one where they accidentally get sent back in time somehow and catch the 3 ghosts from Charles Dicken's A Christmas Carol and ruin Christmas forever. The one where they come across the ghost of an actual dead guy, and they just have no idea what to do. The one where they just meet what is very obviously supposed to be ghost versions of the cast of Star Trek. The one where they explain why Janine goes from fiesty mid-30s New Yorker to "Ah Shucks" teenager midway through the show.
Yes! I also remember one with Nightmare, which in retrospect, seems like it was written by Neil Gaiman. One where there's a creepy jazz band playing on repeat. One where they're trapped in Hell and have to win a gameshow to get out.
One of my favorites is when Winston has to decide the fate of humanity by playing a game of baseball with the forces of good versus the forces of evil. Also, evil is allowed to cheat, because it's evil.
The ones that always stick in my mind are the one with Rays auntie and the phony medium, the one where egons dad convinced him to leave the ghostbusters and go back to his lab, and the one where they go to a set of a cowboy film and a bunch of ghosts end up getting their packs. All certainly bobbins to anyone without nostalgia goggles.
I loves Ghostbusters 2 as a small child. It never occurred to me until I was an adult and there was Internet that everyone hated it. I still like it. I think it's minted.
Ghostbusters 2's best quality is that it's legit scary in parts compared to the others. How dare James compare it with Ghostbusters 2016. Must admit, though, I love the line from the 2016 version when they say the mayor is totally the mayor from Jaws right now.
I enjoyed it too. I don't know that I've ever bumped into a anyone that hates it. Not that there isn't, of course. Then again, it's not like it came up in everyday conversation with everyone I know... 😅

Man, that makes so much sense about the different animation houses... Some of the episodes I remember being fantastic and almost scary, and then some were just garbage.

17:04 I DISTINCTLY remember the episode where it's revealed Janine has a supernatural entity changing her personality/appearance. It even took her accent!! There's a big showdown where she floats up into the air and yells at the Ghostbusters for not appreciating her as she morphs into all these different types of women. Egon takes off his proton pack and talks her down. They catch the bad spirit bc it breaks connection. In the end Egon hugs her and says he likes her just the way she was and asks her on a date. 💜 As a little girl I appreciated the message. Knowing the backstory now I appreciate the pettiness even more.

I remember at one point Ghostbusters 3 was supposed to be the team finding a portal to Hell, but it’s just like NYC with traffic that never moves, and I’d love to see that Hell froze over script as a comic.
Loved that show, on a re-watch the main thing that doesn't hold up is the ghastly invert visual effect, that may have seemed cool at the time but is just jarring.
You have to hand it to the writers, because on paper it feels like one of those concepts cooked up by a clueless network executive. The actual show is way better than it has any right to be. "Let's replace the beloved Ghostbusters characters with a team of hip, young, multicultural and all-inclusive college kids! Make sure there's a girl, and a wheelchair guy! And we need the word 'extreme' in the title. That's what the cool kids are saying!"
I've always assumed the look of Kate McKinnon's character in Ghostbusters 2016 (the best thing about that movie) was inspired by Real Ghostbusters Egon.
Extreme Ghostbusters is the most underrated cartoon of the 90's. It was made by the same company that did the Men in Black cartoon with a lot of the monsters done in a similiar style to those aliens. The series final is epic as hell, a lovecraftian horror is creeping up to New York like a hurricane and they have to build a giant proton blaster and giant trap. The original team returns to help.
I actually remember Extreme Ghost Busters. My chief memory is an episode where they went after the ghost/monster in the Bermuda triangle. They got the old team to come back for that one.
6:43 Didn't expect Gower Street to turn up out of nowhere. There's a Waterstones bookstore there supposedly built on the site of a former Roman farm. There have been several stories of both book-browsers and booksellers turning around corners and seeing the ghosts of the farmers, cast with a strange hue during twilight. The story of the haunted bookshop actually inspired the library-set opening of the original Ghostbusters film in the library, which was why the working title was Blue Harvest.
Damn, I didn't know it was Bill Murray that did Lorenzo Music dirty. I remember when they did the Venkman voice switch up as a kid and very much missed the Garfield voice. I use to watch Ghostbusters as well as U.S. Acres and Garfield.
Honestly, this series was great, and has a ton of episodes that hold up really well (especially in the first 2 seasons). It's great, and I recommend any modern audiences to give it a go! You have to be willing to just have fun with it, and treat it almost as a totally separate thing. I had a crush on Egon as a kid, LOL. The 80s pop songs were actually made for the show, and the band is called Tahiti. Ray Parker Jr actually came back to do an original track for this show, and I think the OST is some of the best Halloween party music out there! Hometown Hero was also a great song, played when Ray visits his hometown and feels bad for leaving to live in the big city, but then saves the day by rescuing a local farm from a ghost infestation. :)
I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU GUYS DIDNT COMMENT ON THE FACT THAT LORENZO “JERRY” MUSIC, THE ORIGINAL VOICE OF GARFIELD, VOICED PETER VENKMAN IN THIS SHOW. PETER VENKMAN WAS ORIGINALLY VOICED BY BILL MURRAY IN THE ORIGINAL GHOSTBUSTERS MOVIE AND THE SUBSEQUENT SEQUEL! THE IRONIC PART IS THAT BILL MURRAY LATER WENT ON TO VOICE GARFIELD IN GARFIELD (2004) AND THE SEQUEL GARFIELD A TALE OF TWO KITTIES (2006). THIS WAS AFTER THE CLAIM THAT MURRAY MADE, WHERE HE STATED HE DID NOT WANT VENKMAN TO SOUND LIKE GARFIELD. THAT IS WHY IT IS IRONIC! HOW COULD YOU GUYS NOT MENTION THIS CRUCIAL TRIVIA?!?????!??!?!!?
@@MattMcIrvin I hear that's the reason the original promo for the show was called Blue Harvest, which is also the working title for the first Star Wars movie.
I'm such a huge fan of Season 2 I had to speak up - Season 1 of of the show was comtrolled by the network and was horribly generic, but Season 2 they were *somehow* syndicated and somehow got like 60 episodes so the writers had freedom to tell any tales they wanted. Some of that stuff was genuinely so damn good, esp near the end of their syndicated run. Genuinely as a kid used to cry at the end of "The thing in mrs favisham's attic" and the one with Ray's sister on the farm was damn well written too. If folks check that out, it's definitely worth it.
Slimer did have post-cartoon success as a mascot for "Ecto-Cooler", a Hi-C tie-in that lasted until *2001*. Meaning there was a brief point in human history where you could safely drink the contents of a first edition Ecto-Cooler while under the surveillance of the Patriot Act.
I know that they discontinued Ecto Cooler originally when The Real Ghostbusters had ended since it was introduced partially to tie-in with the cartoon, but with the franchise being made more relevant than ever now by Sony along with its already lasting legacy in pop culture the kid in me wishes they could just revive that flavor of Hi-C permanently with Slimer as the mascot again. If Fred and Barney can still be iconic enough to sell boxes of Fruity/Cocoa Pebbles cereal in the stores, then why not Slimer? They did at least give us that brief revival of Ecto Cooler back when the 2016 movie was released, and like other fans you can bet that I took the most advantage that I could to be able to officially drink it again for the time that it was out (cause the 2016 movie itself didn't look like the kind of reboot I would be wanting to go see otherwise).
After he wrote "Citizen Ghost" (6:15), J. Michael Straczynski created Babylon 5...and he's apparently also written a Captain America comic that's coming out in a couple months...
I asked my mum to get me an Egon haircut and the lady had to tell me "we can't add hair by cutting it" and I'll never forget it. Because she was calling me stupid.
Knowing nothing going in, I'm sure the reason The Real Ghostbusters look different from the film actors is that Columbia Pictures didn't want to pay the actors for using their likenesses
The idea of a consulting firm getting, what I imagine was, quite a sizeable paycheck in return for their horrible studio notes pains me on a deep level.
I feel like James & Mason would probably enjoy Extreme Ghostbuster a bit more. It shares a lot of the same crew as Men in Black series & the aforementioned Adelaide Productions.
The Real Ghostbusters defined my childhood. All the toys came with a jar of ectoplasm, my dad always took it away, he thought i’d like stain the furniture and carpet or something.
Somewhere on TH-cam there's a deep-dive on this series, and they really get into the details of the changes the consulting firm made to the show, and the resulting drama. Apparently, network execs hiring some agency to water-down kids entertainment, theoretically making it more pallatable to them and their parents was becoming ubiquitous in the industry around that time. It really is pretty fascinating.
My favorite part of Ghostbusters is their love of 80s R&B like Bobby Brown. Up there with Joker's apparent love of Prince. Next do Extreme Ghostbusters!
Wait. I thought Ghostbusters 2 had some of the funniest bits in the entire franchise: 1 - Venkman is actually leading Louis Tully's leading of the witness during questioning in the courtroom scene. 2 - The bit when they are futilely trying to convince the street cops that they work for the power company, "Yo!" 3 - "Boys! Boys! You're scaring the straights." 4 - "Yeah, I know Bassmasters. Sure." 5 - Pretty much the entirety of Venkman's TV hosting gig scene. 6 - "Being miserable and treating other people like dirt is every New Yorker's God given right!" - Mayor of New York ...just to name a few moments that I think are the hardest to deny, but am I crazy? These are clever amd fun plot-based and character-based moments ...aren't they?
Harold Ramis has some of the funniest lines in that movie. “We had part of a slinky… but I straightened it.” “Let’s see what happens if we take away the puppy.” “Thanks Louis. Short, but pointless.”
Always thought GB2 had the stronger scares. I mean, the heads on pikes in a dark train tunnel, c'mon ?! I'd also like to point out this f**ked up take on that sequence. Vigo the Carpathian was doing his best to keep the guys away from the River of Slime. But here's the more unsettling part. Those were the heads of people he killed back when he was alive. The fact that he cared to remember the detailed look of horror on every victim as he conjured up each head shows you he was an even worse villan than Gozer!❤
I'm sorry James but the sequel to the first Garfield movie is actually titled "Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties" in which Bill Murray reprises his role as Garfield
This channel needs a Caravan of Garbage on Garfield properties. I’m talking a Tail of Two Kitties. I’m talking Garfield and Friends. I’m talking the entergaging revolutionary app Garfield Eats. Garfield is a comic book character too sort of.
I loved Ghostbusters as a kid because I just thought it was about guys catching ghosts. I didn’t know it was a comedy. I didn’t get any of the jokes as a kid except for the slapstick. And I loved this cartoon and the toys. No gift I will ever receive can come close to the Ghostbusters fire house. That was the hypest Christmas of all time.
The first 78 episodes are actually really solid for Saturday morning. The characters are consistent and clearly defined, they all get opportunities to shine, and the writers clearly put some research into actual folklore, to draw inspiration from. After network meddling, though, it completely changed overnight, and became very, very bad and dumb.
Best video of all time on YT. James is right, 2016 Ghostbusters is as good a movie as any bad movie tbh… it has passion and heart in a basic funny way wtv like it wasn’t a masterpiece it wasn’t terrible.
I don't believe that more people are asking J. Michael Straczynski about why slimer lives with the ghost busters than why he wrote the worst spider-man story of all time
I thought Afterlife was based on Aykroyd's original idea for GB2. He wanted to have the Ghostbusters go to hell and fight demons, in a Dante's Inferno type of way. Ice demons in NY might be a version of that, maybe.
It's a consequence of its scattered production, but I'm really sad you both didn't like this. There are some really great gems in this series, which did more to advance the Ghostbusters world and brand than anything else after the first movie. If you watch nothing else from this series, I suggest checking out "The Ghostbusters in Paris." It's a lot of fun with some great lore. And of course there is the all-time classic "Knock Knock," with some unwitting subway workers opening the gates to doomsday. There are many more outstanding episodes, but I also want to give a shoutout to the one where Winston has to play baseball on a team of angels against a team of demons, with a soul on the line. So good.
I think they got their ghost classifications from the Ghostbusters RPG they made back in the day, there was a Tobin's Spirit Guide supplement for it. That's my guess anyway. I once saw a second-hand copy of the book when I was a kid in Portland's gigantic Powell's Bookstore. Good times. Anyway, you can probably find it in PDF somewhere on the internet and I bet there's one dork reading this who's really glad to know this and a lot of people thinking "Why would I care?" I don't know man, I'm just here to help that one dork.
Ghostbusters 2 is a standard 80s sequel for the 1st act. They do that annoyingly overused thing where they have to undo the progress of the 1st movie so they can do the "comeup" part again. Once we get past that its a really fun movie. Janozj (sp?) alone is fantastic. Peter McNichol crushes it. Moranis and Annie Potts have a lot more to do. The entire Viggo storyline is fun. The Cheech Marin cameo is my favorite joke in all of movies. It was a solid movie.
Can you guys do a video like “Draw My Life” or something to explain how you and Mason became met and became friends, your love for comics, movies and tv shows, what you two were doing before TH-cam or started doing TH-cam. I remember a video that James said his brother hates Mason, lol but why??? What did Mason do? I am genuinely curious! (Comment from California, USA)
Thank you maso for bumming me the fuck out at the 5 minute 30 second mark, i dont watch youtube to be reminded of my mortality and inevitable death i watch it to distract me from that fact, that said great video as always lads, very entertaining even if it was slightly less entertaining than the rest of the catalogue due to aforementioned reasons
I remember having two issues of the Real Ghostbusters comic book. I think demons were turning everyone else into a demon using some kind of missile or bomb. When I was young, I built it up in my head how incredible one page of the comic was… the demon was in the air throwing the bomb onto the ground. All through my teenage years I remembered how amazing the artwork was and made me want to practice art. And then closer to middle age, I found those two comic books and… the art in that page was fine but nothing special. What a strange letdown… that must be what it feels like to have your nostalgia melt before your eyes. I still have fond memories for the comic but it doesn’t feel the same.
Growing up in the late-80s / 90's, I always aspired to have Egon's hair from this series, but I was much too young, and much too stupid, to know that was a pipe dream (in more ways than one).
That 'Why Jeanine Changed' one was probably my favorite episode, just wasn't expecting them to ever address that (and seeing as how JMS wrote it, I can see why it was so good 😅)
After watching the Secret Galaxy video on this series it seems like the first 13 episodes were for network specifically and had to adhere to a bunch of stupid rules while season two was 65 episodes and was made for syndication which gave them more freedom to get more into the occult bringing in Cthulu and things of that nature.
I was obsessed with the first movie & it's soundtrack which I had on cassette. Then I was obsessed with The Real Ghostbusters! I even bought the Lego sets and custom minifigures!

2007. It lost Slimer in 1997 and was renamed twice until it was eventually discontinued.
Oh...I wrote this as soon as I saw the name at 6:15...umm...well, maybe leave it here for the Captain America info.?
Jokes on you I’m wasting my life working in an office while this plays in the background!
OH YES THEY’RE FINALLY DOING THE ORIGINAL GODZILLA. I HAVE PERSONALLY WON!!
Same
Right? Can’t wait, I’m a massive Godzilla stan
A mix between a deep rumination on the coat of war and a hunky eyepatch scientist with an oxygen machine
I asked my mum to get me an Egon haircut and the lady had to tell me "we can't add hair by cutting it" and I'll never forget it. Because she was calling me stupid.
Rolf Harris jumpscare
😂😂😂
He was worse than Gozer and Vigo combined.
Knowing nothing going in, I'm sure the reason The Real Ghostbusters look different from the film actors is that Columbia Pictures didn't want to pay the actors for using their likenesses
This is what I thought, too.
The idea of a consulting firm getting, what I imagine was, quite a sizeable paycheck in return for their horrible studio notes pains me on a deep level.
Slimer's name was not Slimer, it was Onionhead according to the closing credits and design sheets.
I feel like James & Mason would probably enjoy Extreme Ghostbuster a bit more. It shares a lot of the same crew as Men in Black series & the aforementioned Adelaide Productions.
I remember liking this show, I especially liked when Sigourney Weavers character opened her fridge to a demon dog that shouted “Blue Harvest” .
Garfield Kills Again is a severely underrated film
The Real Ghostbusters defined my childhood. All the toys came with a jar of ectoplasm, my dad always took it away, he thought i’d like stain the furniture and carpet or something.
I can still remember how it smelled...
00:40 aw in my mind James and mason have been friends since they were five
Somewhere on TH-cam there's a deep-dive on this series, and they really get into the details of the changes the consulting firm made to the show, and the resulting drama.
Apparently, network execs hiring some agency to water-down kids entertainment, theoretically making it more pallatable to them and their parents was becoming ubiquitous in the industry around that time. It really is pretty fascinating.
Love wasting my precious time and money to see wand watch these early! Worth every minute I ignore my fellow human beings!
That He-Man concept animation looks amazing!
Well the inclusion of Rolf Harris is unfortunate 😬😂
My favorite part of Ghostbusters is their love of 80s R&B like Bobby Brown. Up there with Joker's apparent love of Prince.
Next do Extreme Ghostbusters!
🖌🖌🖌 Wow, wasn't expecting to ever see Rolf Harris today ...Or ever again ...
Happy to see the Ghostbuster RPG making an appearance. One of the first TTRPGs ever
Wait. I thought Ghostbusters 2 had some of the funniest bits in the entire franchise:
1 - Venkman is actually leading Louis Tully's leading of the witness during questioning in the courtroom scene.
2 - The bit when they are futilely trying to convince the street cops that they work for the power company, "Yo!"
3 - "Boys! Boys! You're scaring the straights."
4 - "Yeah, I know Bassmasters. Sure."
5 - Pretty much the entirety of Venkman's TV hosting gig scene.
6 - "Being miserable and treating other people like dirt is every New Yorker's God given right!" - Mayor of New York
...just to name a few moments that I think are the hardest to deny, but am I crazy? These are clever amd fun plot-based and character-based moments ...aren't they?
Harold Ramis has some of the funniest lines in that movie.
“We had part of a slinky… but I straightened it.”
“Let’s see what happens if we take away the puppy.”
“Thanks Louis. Short, but pointless.”
The entire courtroom scene alone matches up with the best the first film has to offer imo.
Oh, yes, _Garfield Kills Again!_ the classic live-action sequel. My sister and I rented it a lot when we where children 😂
I'm sorry James but the sequel to the first Garfield movie is actually titled "Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties" in which Bill Murray reprises his role as Garfield
No
This channel needs a Caravan of Garbage on Garfield properties. I’m talking a Tail of Two Kitties. I’m talking Garfield and Friends. I’m talking the entergaging revolutionary app Garfield Eats. Garfield is a comic book character too sort of.
"do, ray, igon" is the funniest joke in any film ever which makes GB 2 way better then the 2016 one
The Lorenzo Music episodes! Love em and they do indeed hold up very very well!
I was born in 78, so currently James, Maso, and I are all in our early 30s. But back then I was WAY older than them, and this show was EVERYTHING
4:10 man.. I'm not really susceptible to nostalgia but that Arthur 'cutaway/flashback' sound felt like a ducking hug of nastalgia 😅🤣
Garfield kills again?! What alternative reality gave us that sequel? We are clearly living in the worst timeline.
So…what everyone obviously wants to know - are you doing Extreme Ghostbusters next or what?
Best video of all time on YT. James is right, 2016 Ghostbusters is as good a movie as any bad movie tbh… it has passion and heart in a basic funny way wtv like it wasn’t a masterpiece it wasn’t terrible.
I like that they all share the same bedroom
I wish they shared the same Bed 🏳️🌈
Best editing on the internet
I don't believe that more people are asking J. Michael Straczynski about why slimer lives with the ghost busters than why he wrote the worst spider-man story of all time
18:27 I was shown this in elementary school in the late 2000s. Absolutely terrified me, especially considering I didn’t even know what drugs were
I thought Afterlife was based on Aykroyd's original idea for GB2.
Garfield Kills Again is super underrated. One of the best field type movies, in my opinion.
there's something amusingly ironic about the guys commenting on poor sound while there's a low end boomy echo over all their own dialogue :)
The Toei animated episodes are awesome. "The Collect Call of Cthulhu" Season 2, Episode 28 is a stand out for sure 🙂
BUSTIN MAKES ME FEEL GOOD
I remember having two issues of the Real Ghostbusters comic book.
The cenobite episode is nuts
Shoutout to the editor
Although could’ve probably done without seeing Rolf Harris 😂
That 'Why Jeanine Changed' one was probably my favorite episode, just wasn't expecting them to ever address that (and seeing as how JMS wrote it, I can see why it was so good 😅)
Caravan of Garbage idea: 1980s Ewok show or Caravan of Courage
10:12 😳
How _very_ dare you! The villain (Vigo) is the highlight of the series! Also Louie finally becoming the fifth Ghostbuster is gold.
Please do extreme ghostbusters too!
That, "WAIT📣📣📣" was perfectly timed because I was about to SNAP!😂😂
After watching the Secret Galaxy video on this series it seems like the first 13 episodes were for network specifically and had to adhere to a bunch of stupid rules while season two was 65 episodes and was made for syndication which gave them more freedom to get more into the occult bringing in Cthulu and things of that nature.
I had those toys. The firehouse, the ecto one, one of each of the team (the ones where their eyes popped) , slimmer and probably some more.
Bold choice to include a random shot of Rolf Harris
This morning, I went to work and had no idea what day it is. I come back home, now I know it's Thursday. Thank you Mr. Movie Sunday.
I was obsessed with the first movie & it's soundtrack which I had on cassette. Then I was obsessed with The Real Ghostbusters! I even bought the Lego sets and custom minifigures!
Can I request a review here? No? Alright, can you do Kevin Costner epics? Water World, Postman, Dances With Wolves. One of them is good too.
Giving a like for the absolute perfect Ghostbusters takes: that there is one good movie
JMS?! Of Babylon 5 & Spiderman?!
Wait, until Sal finds Out!
"Before any of us was born..?" Yeah, I watched the live action Ghostbusters on network TV on Saturday mornings. Lol!
18:50 For some reason out of everything, these comic designs and the first crossover image that I recognize the most
So this was "we have Ghostbusters at home, and they're the real ones."
