Wētā FX did most of it with 48 one-off shots done by Industrial Light & Magic. It actually was the reason why the Avatar sequels got delayed - Wētā was too busy with this and it was their first priority. So Peter Jackson personally lobbied before James Cameron to wait - to which the latter finally conceded, as, loose quote: "I cannot say no to Marty Scorsese".
@@Kurskij due to the Avatar sequels getting delayed and those directly responsible for working on the Na’vi, hopping on this project in conjunction with Weta on the overall effects (using the most advanced in blue screen technology covering the soundstage with minimal use of the volume), this actually led to the working title of this project being called Blue Harvest!

From the scalp down James seems so much younger than I've always pictured him in my minds eye. Also seeing the guys acutally moving instead of as animatics has done my head in.
In my head, James is always on the verge of cracking up when he talks. His voice sounds like there’s always a huge, almost diabolical laugh laying in wait. But _seeing_ him actually talk…that’s just his voice! So strange.

I’ve been meaning to get around to watching/listening to this podcast, and now that the Weekly Planet boys are guests it’s the perfect time to start it. It’s always fun to hear what people’s favorite movies are, even if I haven’t seen them myself. Since you mentioned possibly giving viewers/listeners a recommendation based on their favorites, I figured I’d list four of my favorites. My favorites at the moment are: Uncut Gems (2019), Once Upon a Time In Hollywood (2019), O Lucky Man (1973), and Why Don’t You Play in Hell (2013). Apologies if I misunderstood you, but if I didn’t, thank you in advance for reading this.
During the 90-00, John Frankenheimer made some pretty well received TV movies. Against the Wall (based on the Attica prison riot) andersonville ( about union civil war soldiers locked in a POV prison camp) George Wallace (about the infamous segregation governor) and path to war ( a movie about the cold war).
Pretty sure James and Maso are just AI here and I'm not even sure the host isn't just Dave O'Neil in glasses doing a favour for a six-pack and a family sized block of Snack. Totally fake, best episode ever.
I watched Ronin in a cinema in Mildura. It's a great movie. And watched True Lies with my wife the other week; also holds up so well. As mentioned, Arnie's stunt double is very visible, particularly on the horse, but the stunts and action are just great. The one scene that I've always loved is where the camera man is nervous because the battery is dying, perfect bit of acting.
Love this recommendation of the film Hit! I'm a real fan of Richard Pryor, especially when he does dramatic turns. I'll definitely check out this first chance I get.
John Wick Chapter 4 was a martial arts fan’s dream. Donnie Yen, Hiroyuki Sanada, Scott Adkins, Marko Zaror all in the perfection of Chad Stahelski’s action world! Please sir, can I have some more?!
I have such fond memories of a shop we had here in South Africa called Mr Video which rented… DVDs I remember being eight years old furiously trying to convince my friend to get the Last Crusade rather than Return of the Jedi because of how much better it was. I stand by that opinion. They still have a sign up next to the highway but alas the shop is no more. Two weeklies I would pick would be: Peter Jackson’s the Frighteners. Though Heavenly Creatures may be better, and the lord of the rings is a crowd pleaser, there’s something so charming and fun about the frighteners and how it descends from goofy to thrilling. My second weekly would probably be the Secret Life of Walter Mitty, because my dad took us to see it when I was ten, I thought it was gonna be boring, and then it ruled and now I’m a filmmaker. Thanks Ben Stiller. Love the pod, love the finding series, love total reboot, keep up the good work.

Mr video is a great name, and its competitors had great names too: Video 2000, Vee’s Videos, and Mr Video were the main franchises for dvd rental when I was growing up. We still have a retail franchise called “Mr Price” and that’s a terrific name I think, only matched by “Pick N Pay” which is a grocery store. Gonna reminisce for a bit, more for me than for anything else. The Video 2000 near me had all the Star Wars, Vee’s had all the Spy Kids, and Mr Video had the incredibles and the Lord of the Rings. My sister and I got a movie each on Fridays, and then we stayed over at my grandmothers flat to watch them. Cats vs Dogs was one I remember getting more than once, for some reason, and Robert Rodriguez’s PG masterpiece Shorts (which now as an adult is either an ADHD fever dream or a beautiful kids movie, depending on my mood). My sister got Honey 2 and Step Up 4 over and over because she was into dance movies or something. I also remember the display near the window had a copy of Scott Pilgrim VS the World, and the cover looked so cool that basically every year from age six to age ten I would try convince my mom I was old enough to watch it, and she’d look it up and say definitely not. Only got my hands on it once I was sixteen, and obviously fell in love. I also remember thinking how scary the Village looked, and how awesome the green hornet looked. One of those movies is a vibe these days, and the other has Seth Rogen in it. Anyways I’ve written enough nonsense here that I have scared anyone away from reading it, but I was a child at the tail end of the physical media era in a country whose technology was a few years behind, so though I was born in 2003, reminiscing about VHS tapes of Toy Story, Cassette Tapes of the Faraway Tree, and DVDs of Spy Kids two and three is always really nostalgic. Thanks Alexei for the podcasts, you’re a real inspiration, I was constantly listening to old total reboot eps while writing my feature that I’m shooting at the moment. Keep it up.
The only thing in my mind that could have made the John Wick franchise better (even though I could imagine it being a technical and logistical nightmare) would have been squibs instead of CGI blood. I know it wouldn't have been possible to sue them with the head shots, but maybe they could have gone a bit heavier with body shots to compensate. Could you imagine John Wick with the practical, visceral gore of Robocop?!

The only thing in my mind that could have made the John Wick franchise better (even though I could imagine it being a technical and logistical nightmare) would have been squibs instead of CGI blood. I know it wouldn't have been possible to sue them with the head shots, but maybe they could have gone a bit heavier with body shots to compensate.
Could you imagine John Wick with the practical, visceral gore of Robocop?!
