a NEW Mini High Route in the Sierra | North Lake to South Lake High Route

- About 30 miles of almost entirely off-trail travel from North Lake to South Lake, through prime Sierra scenery. I had the idea for this route when hiking the SHR years ago and thinking it a shame that the route stayed on the JMT through this area when there’s so much awesome terrain near the crest. This route can be plugged into the Roper route to make it more adventurous and also works as a standalone long weekend adventure. Special thanks to Jay (Armstrong) and Keaton (Sriracha Rocket) for helping scout this route. Difficulty is similar to that of Roper’s Sierra High Route and the views certainly match the effort required.
Please note: this video is not a guide. Hike at your own risk.
Let me know in the comments if you’d be interested in more info on this great little route.
What a great surprise to find in the feed.
What a phenomenal looking route, Dan. Brilliant work with just the right amount of clues to be able to follow along on a map. I'll absolutely be adding this to an upcoming SHR trip. Thank you for sharing!
Extraordinary route, spectacularly captured.
I haven't done anything south of the YHR yet and this looks extremely compelling.
I was a little south of you in the Gardiner Basin (via Kearsarge/Onion Valley) at the time you did this hike (Sep 12-17th, 2023). Amazing footage, thanks for sharing!
Nice job, I have seen your face in Bishop before...This is definitely not new... But one of the great route variations a few of us locals have done and others over the years, Just to name a few. All from North...North to sabrina...from all over Evo... south lake ... over cloud ripper to the druids and down to Bishop...all the way to barrett lakes and down through Pal to big pine... Evo basin over huxley... Echo from leconte ...Dusy... Clyde spires... johnson ....trapezoid... hurd ...goode no goode... It has been done from the milks... from pine creek over four cables to key hole and through your GPX... There are many low key locals that most do not know about here on the East side, that have done way more then gets talked about here on social media or mountain project. Right a guide GPX or spray the good vibe ... But know, this is definitely not a new route. Good times
Oh I know it’s not new, nothing is. But it makes for a nice title, and it’s new to TH-cam anyway.
I just absolutely love this - places I’ll probably never see with my own eyes and brought to me with your beautiful photography
Very well done. I was wondering about whether there was a trail from north lake to south lake as i approached piute pass on my jmt reroute. Glad I took the road. This would have been beyond my capabilities.
This is a well known favorite skied a section of it but went to Darwin and over Muir pass and out to Sabrina, quite popular
Happy to see a new adventure! I like the minimal editing, music, and commentary.
Un. Real. Another inspiring trip. Thank you for sharing. 😊
Objective distances and climb vertical would be helpful. Awesome traverse! Do you think parts would be possible in winter on skis?
I don’t really ski so it’s hard to say, but I bet a strong back country skier could do the whole thing. I know people ski the original Roper route and this isn’t much different. As for the vertical, the entire route has about 10,300ft vertical gain over its roughly 30 miles
Awe inspiring. Love your hikes.
Yeah boyyyyyyy
Looks like you're carrying enough cargo to camp. How long did this take you guys?
About 3.5 days
Is Darwin Col in between Mt Tom Ross & Darwin Col? TYSM!!
Yep it is between Tom Ross and Mt Darwin. A bit tricky to locate IRL but it is the notch just west of the mountain that is 13,048ft and called Mt Tom Ross on some maps. (2 diff peaks are called Tom Ross)
Back in the day when I was trying to find a way to really explore this area outside the known passes, I marked a line through Google Earth similar to yours. But I never did it. Seeing this amazing video and boy - I'm going to follow in your footsteps. Well done Dan, these mini high route loops are truly worth exploring and putting on the map. Esp ones like this, where you are never more than a day from trail. Thank you!
Awesome! Yeah, the area first caught my eye when doing Roper’s route and being disappointed it was down on the jmt instead of up there. Glad you’re gonna go for it! Let me know if you have any Qs about the route
Exactly.
More info please
Beautiful scenery. Only bummer was how short the video was. Would really enjoy longer episodes. Agree with others on the minimal music and commentary. Good stuff.
Great route and video. Darwin Bench and Canyon is one of my favorite areas. Never thought to cross from there out to Sabrina basin lakes. Thompson Ridge looks incredible, will have to add that into a trip this summer.
Big fan of your work, Dan. Keep em coming. This one looked challenging. Your man, Keaton moves well on the rock.
Amazing Dan!
Awesome. Always kinda imagined a route but some serious terrain the way you went. I've done the traditional South Lake to North Lake hike... but this is a whole 'nother beast! 😮
Fantastic Dan! I enjoy all your films but the lack of dialogue in this one made for an unexpected change of pace, and a thoroughly enjoyable one at that! Thankyou for sharing:)
This is wow, incredible views, those turquoise lakes, it doesn’t look like an easy trail! Thank you for sharing, it’s now on my hiking list ❤
Fucking epic Dan. Thanks for sharing. Def want more info on the route, would love to tackle it.
epic
Thanks for sharing! Amazing views! I would love to learn more about your route if you cared to share
Great video! Always enjoy watching your content! Thanks for sharing the journey!
Do you have a caltopo file of the route by chance?
SWEET video.
Thanks! I do, but it’s really messy haha. I intend to make a short guide with a map set hopefully soon
@@DanStenziano Would love to take a peak if you don't mind messaging me!
Awesome, Dan. What a great thing to think about, plan, and do your own route. I've yet to do a high route, mostly due to time and logistics. But I think I could do this one, and some more info. on the route would be great.
Breathtaking. And Spicey (is that one step harder than dicey?). thanks for sharing!
Beautiful!! Got a GPX Track?
Going to put out a guide soon! Keep an eye out
Nicely done! Quite the challenge with all the up and down. Great job shooting and editing the video.
Such a tribute to all we love to do out there. Thanks for sharing this. Definitely inspired to do something more off trail someday.
Killer, Dan. Thx for this epic vid. Glad you had some good weather.
Amazing route !! looks amazing ;)
See u, Campo from France
Aww I'm loving your videos my friend! Keep on keeping on brother! Keep em coming 😊
Definitely interested in more route info, although you give us a nice breadcrumb trail :)
Thanks for uploading - hoping to so a variation of the high route this Summer.
Pretty Epic, thank you for sharing.
Dan - you MUST love talas n boulders! I've done much of this route in pieces over the years. Thought no one had hit Darwin Col - no footprints to be found in 2022 - except Bob Burd. Gonna put this one on my list, when my knees are replaced.
It’s a love hate relationship :)
Darwin Col is really cool! I didn’t find much info on it when researching but it’s a very exciting pass. Not surprised Bob Burd has been up there. Hope you’re back out there with healthy knees soon.
love the silence of this one. Would love to see gpx data for the route
Love it when you put the date on the video!! Thanks!
Awesome route! Definitely interested in more info, especially between Thompson Lake and Treasure Lakes over to Hurd Col. Tried following along on Caltopo but definitely got lost in there haha.
Couldn’t make it *too* easy from the video :)
thanks for this, looks like a cool route! Did you go in over Piute Pass and detour north to Humphrey's Basin before going south to the Lost Lakes & the Keyhole?
As soon as we got over Piute we headed south toward Glacier Divide, so we were only on the outer reaches of Humphreys Basin for a little while
As always, I ultra-enjoyed this video. Would love to see more info on this route or any of your adventures. Question. Have you done the Hayduke trail??
Not yet, but it’s on my list. If my schedule works out, maybe this fall 🤞🏼
Interesting route. Tx for sharing.
Thanks for posting Dan
Thompson lake seems out of the way, is it the easiest way to get down the ridge?
Thompson Lake is the least steep way to get down from the ridge and also was for me the scenic highlight of the route. Not too out of the way, just had to climb the ridge a bit instead of crossing right over
jaw dropping
Thanks
Siiiiiick
m forsure interested in this '"great little route" help a hiker out ! i gotta do this one!
Going to make a guide, stay tuned!
@@DanStenziano ohhh mmmaaann i love that ! can u atleast say if ur gonna make a video abt it or is it gonna be like a blog on a website?
@solukhumbu911 have been wanting to make a website for a while so will put it on that. It’ll be a map set and written guide
@@DanStenziano thats awesome! will definitely look forward to that
