The gift shop serves another very important purpose besides selling trinkets. Wait times for a table at the restaurant can be VERY long. Instead of staring at the host/hostess getting increasingly impatient, people can be distracted by wandering the gift shop looking at all the interesting little items you rarely see at any other store. This distraction makes the wait time seem to go much faster than if you were just standing there staring at a clock waiting for your turn, and you don't start your meal aggravated.
I live in Florida and we have Cracker Barrel's all over the place. Absolutely love their food, personally never bought anything from the store. But their food is simple and delicious. And they serve breakfast all day.
I'm from Florida (currently live in Oregon). I miss Cracker Barrel (though they started to open some not near me). Florida has way better food. The ONLY thing is that if you want to get something healthy it's much harder.
For me Cracker Barrel and road trips go hand in hand. When I was a kid my family would go on an annual road trip and every time we hit the road for a new city/state we'd get cracker barrel for breakfast. Great memories with that place.
As I posted above, my first CB stop was in New Jersey (they had not opened one near me at the time). At they New Jersey CB, I ordered a Reuben (I had a hankering for one at the time); I will no longer get a Reuben anywhere BUT Cracker Barrel (and they now have one a half-hour from me). Until Cracker Barrel, I had not found a decent Reuben at a chain - the Reuben at Cracker Barrel is one I go back for. (The quibble? I can't get it "to go" - if I could, I would. Reubens are my alternative to pastrami sandwiches - something you savor when you find a good source.)
I’m a current server at Cracker Barrel, and while supply lines have caused some issues (getting repairs on the coffee machines is an issue), it’s not out of the ordinary for this time. We phase in new items often enough that it keeps things interesting and we do get quite a few travelers (always interesting to talk with). Things are optimized to run smoothly and overall it’s a pretty great place to work
Good point they're in the retail area directly across from the entrance so you don't have to go through the restaurant but they hope to catch you with some of the merch.
If you ever get a chance to stop at a Buc-ee's, do it. They have rows of gas pumps and people make it a point to stop and use their restrooms. I always like to buy their smoked cheddar when I pass thru.
Go eat at Mcdonalds then! The libatards think they should draw a check for stumping a toe. It is only top quality food after you grind everything up so fine nothing is recognizable then form mold it with breading. The commercials said it is top quality with a jingle, only the finest beaks, feet, eyeballs but all natural it is. Americas younger generation makes me wonder what are we doing wrong in the US.
Not truly southern because they don't serve blackeyed peas on New year's day and no collard greens.its an interstate trap to capture Yankee dollars on the way to Florida

Cracker Barrel holds a special place in my heart because my family and I always stopped there on the long drive to visit my grandparents. It was great to take a break, get out of the car, have a change of scene, a nice ambience and great food.

Excellent video as always! I wanted to add one thing about Cracker Barrel that makes them a success and it will seem small at first. Parking Lot. I know that seems like nothing but it's huge if you have a RV or trailer. When you are traveling across the country in a vehicle that is 30-50 feet long, you need RV parking. Cracker Barrel has RV parking spaces and that is a huge reason to stop there. Just think about parking a large vehicle at any other restaurant. Truck stops get old fast and stopping at Cracker Barrel is a treat in comparison.
When I went to the South for the first time, my boyfriend's mom took us to a Cracker Barrel. Being from the Northwest, all I ever heard about it was how Southern and cheap it was. Honestly I imagined it'd be like an Applebees. But no sir it was not. It did not feel like I was at a chain. And the menu, while definitely Southern, had some unexpected gems, like the baked apples. Not only that, but the servers were very attentive and chatty. The whole place has a warm vibe to it and I sas pleasently surprised. So not only is location key for this business, but the cozy atmosphere and above and beyond customer service certainly makes for a solid company. Seriously, if you haven't, go, get a meal, the portions are massive!
Who is brad? Is he a friend of yours, that sucks your friends wife was fired. Hopefully she finds another job soon. Plus since she was fired she can enjoy a break while making unemployment.
I got the pleasure to be a hostess at cracker Barrell. I loved working for them. They truly cared about me as an employee. cracker Barrell means so much to me. This is the meal I ate on my wedding day. It will always be one of my favorite places
You left out how the rapid expansion in the mid and late 90's almost destroyed them. They ended up firing the president you mentioned. Their stock plummeted. They slowed expansion and advertising budget and recovered. They had many legal challenges ... including one about labor practices for servers that changed laws regarding service labor.
I don’t usually do breakfast food. But... just wow. 😅 That will actually make me get up early on a Saturday, and there’s almost nothing else, almost. Though they have farming equipment and other stuff suspended from the ceiling in my town in tornado alley in TN (three major tornadoes in the last eight years that we heard because they were so close, and they had to rebuild a college while I was there; people died). So I never go on a stormy day because, I don’t wanna see that plow or scythe come at me at top speed. But other days... breakfast heaven. Wooden pearly gates. And my dad buys their syrup from the store, only uses it. His loyalty is commendable.
I honestly LOVE the company. The best part about 1 hour waits, is getting to sift through stuff you don't need but love to look at. Idk. I've always loved these stores, ever since I was little. Everything about the restaurant was perfect. There's a reason they do so well

OK, you hit me where I live so I have to give a long winded reply. Firstly, the strong theme makes them stand out from the crowd and in doing so attracts a valuable pair of demographics, families and people over 50. These are two groups that buy a lot of food and I need to add that the food is bland but solid. By that I mean there is little or no spice and the two groups I mentioned tend not to like spicy food since the young and old do not handle it so well. Secondly the food prices are very reasonable. They give you a ton of food and no one leaves hungry. Thirdly, the locations tend to be off the beaten path (you usually need to follow little signs to wind around to the back of some hotel or gas station) but that keeps the costs down as the locations often are not considered prime. Fourthly, They have a warehouse full of real artifacts of Americana. This means no 2 stores are exactly the same and each one offers some incredibly cool decor ranging from old shotguns to Rosie the riveter posters. That just never gets old. Aging farts like me can see stuff from our parents youth. There is an emotional reaction to these historical touchstones and the best part is that many are local to the store. BTW, many locals do eat there as well. Keep up the good work. PS: Judgin' by the way you said "grits" you ain't from the south, so, without offering up personal data, where does ya hail from...and for Pete's sake, at least give us yer' furst name. I feel like I'm talkin' to a cottinpickin' robot.

I live in a California location and the reason a lot of people dont want to go there again is that the food is not healthy. Clogging your arteries and full of salt.
Miranda Brooks ah, I see the problem. You live in California. I would advise moving to a better state. Michigan maybe. North Carolina isn’t a bad option either.
Yep - it reminds me of the food I grew up on and now feel guilty about eating. And while it may be artery clogging, they have semi-healthy options. You don't have to get Chicken-Fried Steak slathered in gravy with mac & cheese and a baked potato covered in butter and sour cream while eating two biscuits covered in butter and jelly.
And that advertising method is also used by the Texas-centralized convenience store, Buc-ee's. Buc-ee's just got their first locations outside the state of Texas. These convenience stores are MASSIVE. So big, in fact, that you actually feel small going up to one. The store itself is often about two-thirds the size of a wal-mart, and has 60 or more gasoline pumps. What's more, they have people that work there whose whole job is to keep the places clean, and they're damn good at keep it clean.
Well, yes, the Buc-ee's along the interstates are massive. However, you can find some normal-sized (small for Buc-ee's) stores in small towns around Texas.
A black buddy of mine back in college used to joke that the name literally referred to the clientele because every location was crammed wall-to-wall with white people waiting for their table. I still think of this and snicker every time I enter one of their restaurants.
lol i agree with the clientele 😂 i work at one in south FL and its definitely true. but the first cracker barrel originated in lebanon tennessee and started as a gas station! they had barrels full of crackers that would sit outside and people would sit around them and talk etc. it ended up turning into the franchise it is today and i truly love working here. and yes i did have to sadly learn about the origination of the franchise in my trajning🤣🥴
Howard Johnsons, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Holiday Inn, Circle K, Pea Soup Anderson's. Lots of examples of American roadside success stories. It's a formula that definitely works. Still makes for a great story and I enjoyed your video. Thanks.
The reason why it didn't hurt their sales during the controversy is because a large portion of their customer base don't support the gay life style. They wanted to make the rule in the first place because it's what they thought their primary customer base would want.
I came to the comments to see if anyone mentioned that. If sales went up and business improved following their decision to not hire gays, it looks like they read their customer base correctly. =/
@@maxpowers4394 A lifestyle is when a person chooses to do something like shopping in certain stores or wearing certain clothes. Many have tried psychologists and methods to change in the past but have not been able to because it is not a choice, therefore, it's not a lifestyle. Instead of saying "don't support the gay lifestyle" it's much more accurate to say "don't support gay people"
It most definitely can be. Having same sex attractions isn’t a choice, I don’t know if acting on it can be but if you style your life based on who you have sex with yes that is a gay lifestyle. Ie Ru Paul celebrates the gay lifestyle.
We just had breakfast there this morning. Love their cheesy hash browns. I did appreciate the fact that they let me customize my order and not have to waste stuff I'm not going to eat. The, "All the Fixins," bit is not something I care for, so when they let me drop that part of it and just order what I wanted, that was cool. My wife loves the store part and always seems to find a new snow globe to add to her collection.
I used to be an employee of Cracker Barrel, and the best thing that Cracker Barrel has going for them is the corporate structure of the business. This allows for any number of things. For example, they allow you to rise in the chain of command, they have phenomenal employee benefits, and Cracker Barrel allows you to step back to a much simpler time and enjoy a nice meal. Cracker Barrel separates itself by the fact that it invests in its employees, its customers, and its success. If a location is faltering, Cracker Barrel corporate can bring in its on team to build the location back to profitability. That’s what sets Cracker Barrel apart from the franchises so often found in corporate America.
I love cracker barrel. When my family took a trip across the southern part of the country, we planned all our meal stops based on Cracker Barrel signs. We ate there constantly. The food is amazing! We always say the deeper the southern accent of your waitress, the better your meal is going to be.
Their food is very consistently good, I love their chicken and dumplings which isn't a common menu item anywhere else. The fact there are so many carby choices such as biscuits, cornbread, mac and cheese, hash brown casserole...it's just wonderful comfort food. I also love the real fireplace and the store, always fun to see what different kind of candy/snacks you can find to take home for dessert!

I'm from TN and live near Lebanon (pronounced Leh-bah-nin) Anyway, I enjoy their food because it's one of the few places that you can get home style foods for a cheap price. However, I'm a Black man and have been pretty self conscious since the racial discrimination suit was made public. There were company memos that made seating charts for Black people. (Parts of their restaurants were called Africa) They were seating whites ahead of Black ppl although the Black ppl were there first. There were many other complaints including unfair hiring practices. And it occurred in at least 50 of their restaurants. This was the 90s ppl. Now, it doesn't seem to be a problem but I still think about it.
Im an employee at the cracker barrel in Alcoa TN and ever since i started it's been a blast. You truly are a member of the family and are treated like one weather your a customer or an employee so coming first hand i recommend.👍👍👍
Warning, long post from former CB employee turned manager: Was with the company for 7 years, several of which were as a manager. I was at Store 13 (and a few other local stores but that should give an idea of how old my store was, and how close it was to "home office" in Lebanon, TN... fun fact, store #1 is no longer in operation, but store #2 is and is a few blocks from my son's grandma's house. My old GM is the GM of that store). Anyway... as an employee, it was fantastic and the ethical backbone of the company was unimpeachable and comparable to none other in the restaurant industry. It was a fantastic company to work for as an employee! Maintaining the company reputation was supreme, and a lot of staff believed in the store and felt it was a great place to work. Not only that, they loved their guests and their regulars. The company has evolved and has become more welcoming and inclusive to all. They have bettered the benefits offered to staff. Pay raises don't happen as often as they should, but there is a schedule and if management follows it, all is well. As an employee, you can do as well or as poorly as you wish. There are always opportunities to move up... but be prepared for holiday time-off black outs, because you can be fired for not showing up on thanksgiving or mother's day. As a manager though, that's when you see some things for what they really are. Granted, some DMs care and if you report fraud and theft by other managers, they will take action. Others will just transfer you to another store. Some DMs will uphold their shift-based or salary-based promises when you accept the management positions, while others won't. Some DMs will not allow their managers to be worked 70-80 hrs a week every week on a 55 hr salary, they will allow you to give proper raises to your staff to retain them so you aren't basically being used as free labor in their place. Some DMs will make sure you have at least 8 hours in between your 11-18 hour shifts (11hr shift, 5 days a week is minimum expectation for managers) while others don't care and I'm pretty sure there's a law about that somewhere. Some DMs won't pay external hires $10-20k more than internal promotes, especially considering the external hires know a fraction of what the internal promotes know about the company and how it operates. I guess at the end of the day, the DM is what will make or break the whole system from the top down for an entire district. If they violate the company's values and abuse their management teams, it trickles down and not in any positive ways. Granted, not all DMs or GMs behave that way... but, plenty do. Becoming a manager was very eye-opening for me and I'm glad I didn't stay. I had intended to find another job on an upcoming vacation but what do ya know, it got rescinded a few weeks before it was scheduled despite already being approved... so I kinda gave up before leaving without notice. The rest of the management team I was working with at the time were on the verge of mental breakdowns. I can only think of a couple managers I worked with who are still with the company. Granted, home office really does strive to be the best restaurant in the country. They DO have high standards for their stores. They DO keep meticulous records. They DO have a very thorough HR team if you're not bullied out of contacting them. They DO want staff and guests to feel welcomed and cared for. It's the rogue DMs and GMs that get in the way of it. That and late pay raises for hourly staff that cause horrifying staff shortages. I gotta say though, they do try to live up to their vision and truly care about the employee and customer experience. The only down side is that the folks working at home office don't live in the real world or spend much time in the actual restaurants, even though there's several dozen within reasonable driving distance. They live in a store #2 fantasy land (which is run by the best manager I have ever had, so that isn't surprising) so some of their expectations are a little unrealistic. They need to get out and actually visit the stores more. They also need to scrutinize their higher level managers a little more closely. There's 3 in particular I can think of that have driven off at least 2 dozen good, talented managers and at least 50+ incredible, dedicated staff with their antics (2 of the 3 I know of were fired for sure, not sure about the 3rd). If they can go visit their stores more and fix those issues, they can continue to be successful, no doubt. Sorry for rambling. I'm just a little disappointed in how the investment of 7 years of my life into that company turned out. I do still think the company is a good one, but those kind of shenanigans will certainly impede the company's overall vision going forward unless they put a stop to them. I am now with a much better company NOT killing myself a little at a time each day. Also no longer in the restaurant industry. Anyway, my point is that if CB can weed out bad apples, or if you're at a store managed by people who care about the company's values, it is and can be a fantastic place to work. I learned a lot from my time with CB, both good and bad, and I'm grateful for both learning experiences.

I think everyone eventually learns that no matter what job you work, nowadays there’s not really such a thing as loyalty or rewarding ppl who stay at the same company. That essentially all companies no matter what see their employees as tools and that’s the truth. I learned that the hard way in a totally unrelated field, information technology. I just wish I was taught this growing up. That you decide your fate and that you have to tell your bosses what you want. I always thought that my managers/bosses would tell me based on my work and displayed skill where they wanted or needed me. I was very shy and obedient type of kid and still as a young adult didn’t understand that you have to figure out what the company wants before they even ask. I still don’t fully understand what to do to get ahead, but I’m going to try now and not back down. People will just overlook you unless you speak up. And you should go find better opportunities if a new one presents itself. It’s actually not good to stay with a company if they’re not teaching you new things or advancing you, even if you yourself don’t care to be rich. If you don’t advance, the issue is you could eventually lose your job because things are always changing now so quickly. You have to always be up on the latest things/trends.

The fact that they own all their own locations is massive. That gives them so much equity they could leverage or weather out just about any down turn or problem on nothing but the value of the real estate alone. That makes them one of the most stable corporations possible.

Brad's wife used to love road trips

Love Cracker Barrel! Spent many a night in my rv at their different locations! Always felt safe and food was always great!!

I knew the Brad’s wife joke was coming
Was Brad's Wife masculine?
the food is almost always good, and just what I want when I go in. That's all I ever care about.
Warning, long post from former CB employee turned manager:
Was with the company for 7 years, several of which were as a manager.
I'm really impressed with how well spoken Brad's wife is here. You should seek employment as a writer and tell your story to the world, Brad's wife.
@@shanemeyer7989 lol. Brad's wife thing happened a few months after I left. Her story sounded about right though 🤷♀️
Scarlett A I really enjoyed reading your comments dear, not often that the words typed can immerse the reader in such a captivating way, so hats off to you dear for sharing your words, and so, then I had seen "view 2 replies" and clicked on it,,, ugh then I read "Brads wife" comment, which I'm sure was meant as a funny but it just took away that good feeling vibe, ya know? So, I'm gonna add more good vibes by typing out my words after that (reply fiasco thingy)....lol It seems to me CB lost a very articulate manager and an involved and in the moment human being, nevertheless though I'm glad to read your words dear, there's hope for mankind yet! ♥️
@@abigail_1970 thank you, your comment made my day. I did care a lot about my staff and my store, maybe too much... but I felt it was worth the investment and was disheartened over time. I suppose I don't regret the things I learned there 💙
I think everyone eventually learns that no matter what job you work, nowadays there’s not really such a thing as loyalty or rewarding ppl who stay at the same company. You have to always be up on the latest things/trends.
when i was a kid this was the only restaurant that I was okay having to wait cause looking around the store was so fun
Yessssssssss
My mom works there and she gets an employee discount and the other day, 4 of us got a great filling meal each for
30-ish bucks.
They messed up when they got rid of their Saturday special, chicken and rice... 🤬😡🤬😡🤬😡 BRING IT BACK!!!
There is no such thing as Authentic American Cuisine
Cracker Barrel: "hold my beer"
I grew up on what they call "southern cooking" today...I just used to call it food...
They don't even serve beer. But I get it haha
American Cuisine exists, it isn't limited to chain restaurants..
It’s not authentic my guy.
@@justacup8676 so Taco Bell? That's American-Mexican I guess
My late wife and I loved Cracker Barrel. We would buy an audiobook at the first one then exchange that for a new one at the next Cracker Barrel, so on and so forth. Clean restrooms; food isn't bad.
I love Cracker Barrel. Sadly don’t have one nearby, but love going there whenever I’m on a road trip.
I absolutely love their dumplings. I use to be a cook there. They’re hand made every day.
I always wondered! They're my favorite menu item, hehe.
@@machinismus they are most certainly not handmade the only had made thing there is the biscuits and cornbread the rest is all frozen and I literally worked truck unloaded supply directly from the truck
They aren't hand made, they come in a plastic bag frozen inside a cardboard box. They are good though. Impossible to microwave though, they never heat up.
@@sparkythewolf I cook and serve at Cracker Barrel and our dumplings are most Definetly hand made every single day they are literally made from the biscuit dough
There are 2 solid reasons that cracker barrel does well:
1. It's a excellent product. The food is consistent and delicious
2. They marketed it very well
I like Cracker Barrell and visit the restaurant whenever my wife and I visit Ronks, PA. Located just a few blocks from our hotel, we order our food to go. The iced tea is really good, as is the fried chicken and Mac and cheese. So simple, inexpensive, nostalgic when walking around the gift shop, and is very satisfying.
every time we travel some where, crackle barrel is a perfect stop! Kids love it too
The fact that they own all their own locations is massive. That gives them so much equity they could leverage or weather out just about any down turn or problem on nothing but the value of the real estate alone. That makes them one of the most stable corporations possible.
property rights and being debt-free are great, aren't they?
Used to take a road trip from Ohio to Florida with my family every year since I was a kid for our annual vacation in Daytona Beach. Part of this vacation tradition included stopping at a Cracker Barrel somewhere along the way, both to and from Florida. I loved it - especially the little triangle peg game you got to play at the table.
Strazman kind of curious as to why everyone's destination is always Florida when it comes to vacations I've lived here for almost 20 years and I see absolutely no Pros about Florida not even the beaches it's too damn hot and it gets hotter every year so what the fuck is the appeal someone please please please please I am genuinely begging you to explain this to me what is Florida's appeal as a state to vacation?
Fun fact: the cracker barrel kitchen usually consists of wild screaming and queen music bring blasted over a cheap Bluetooth speaker.
before watching the answer is simple: southern food is great!!!!!
especially for the cardiologists $$
Not for your heart.
I'd hardly call it southern food, they have their own flair down there. I'd call this comfort food, most local rural food outside metropolitan areas is like this.
Was, until they fired Brad's wife
They're consistently delicious, courteous and clean, and the lack of a franchise model contributes to that I think. Consistency is key.
before u say "the marketing strategy" they did, i noticed that whenever we go out of town or different state, theres always a cracker barrel along interstate or exit of an interstate. and yes im correct when u said it. and also whenver we travel we like to eat a home cook meal style, not just fast food.
Great food, great portion, reasonable prices, friendly staff, lots of goodies, and family focused in general. Plus it appeals to road travelers a lot for sure. The one we have in Tucson is just off I-10 before heading to Phoenix
I go to cracked barrel about once every few months for an unusual reason: to buy chapstick. They are the only place that sells my favorite chapstick and so I go there and buy a few sticks. I am always impressed with how busy it is in there no matter what day or time. The store does have lots of really neat stuff and is very eye catching. Haven't had the food in a long time, but I just remember it being okay. Their business model really draws in the older crowd and is perfect for my area (West Virginia). Maybe in like 30 years they will not have much of a customer base, but lots of people around here I know go there all the time, so even when the old people die off, their kids and grandkids will have memories of going there.
It's actually Dionis goat milk chapstick.
When you go there, you should buy a breakfast from now on.
Country roads take me home to the place i belong
Yes it will be interesting to see how they do over time

The gay thing explains why they're only two in California
None in vt
Why would they want to open one up around homeless flooded with shit and syringe needles all over the streets. I wouldn't want to cater to liberals either. They'll just start a scandal and livestream it on their phone and demand the store be shut down.
