  • Newly-appointed KwaZulu-Natal Public Works and Infrastructure MEC Martin Meyer vows a clampdown on the so-called 'construction mafia'. His department is also moving with speed to take stock of all abandoned and dilapidated state-owned buildings. Tshwane University of Technology researcher Sandile Masuku and Radical Economic Champions' Bafana Nzuza discuss this.
Nzuza says he'll personally work with Meyers if his focus is to develop government property. "But when he says he'll never sit with criminals, calling us criminals, he's getting into a political space rather than being a government official."

From a black man perspective, I so ashamed with this gentleman blaming white men for all society ills. If there are wrongs done historically, there are civilized way to address them. As a black man, I take responsibility for my actions not blame others.

Look, there is imbalance and redress is required. What we can be sure of is that what has been tried hasn't worked. All redress policies have only benefited an executive class. Everyday South Africans have not benefitted. We need to try something else. I've never understood why the co-op business model has never taken off in SA. Providing ALL employees a path to ownership is surely the best way ensure that the economy belongs to those who work it. Why don't we try cooperative empowerment and reward businesses on how well they include all employees as owners (from the CEO to the cleaners) instead of whether or not they included a handful of black execs.

Sorry mate, Black or not we have seen in the George disaster how Whites break the law for cheap labour illegal labour. They act in contravention with the Law, exclude South Africans from the economy. I am not prepared to keep my mouth, because the White man uses media, NGO's to get away from their criminal behaviour. Its well known DA chooses their White contractors over previously disadvantaged. National Coloured Congress took the DA to court when they chose a White contractor to build a skills school over a local contractor in the area and who charged less. NCC won their case in court, and out of spite DA 3 years later had still not build the skills school. White construction companies are as criminal as the Construction mafia but they get away with their criminal acts. Both need to be held accountable.

@@TommyMarxable redress for how many years brother! This people are selfish, this thing of BBE is not meant for black businesses, but for political cadres and their families!

@@EarthScope23 The only viable solution is an all inclusive one - ie encouraging co-ops as a business model and UBI. Otherwise yes, it just becomes a pyramid scheme for the ruling party.

For a small business owner I yruly feel Mr Nzuza left a lot unexplained to a point it sounded as though business organizations are illegal which is not true there are policies which guides these bodies from the business side they could have done better explaining but on the last points he was getting there
Construction Mafia is these big contractors

It’s actually crazy how many of SAs problems started with JZ being in office. Can you imagine the damage he’d do if he had six more months in office 😢

He should follow proceedure to get contracts, not use mafia style tactics to demand work. He's a blatant liar. People like this should be stopped.

What gave them the right to invade a site and ask for the 30%. Because my understanding is if there is a tender it will be advertised and those qualifying will then be awarded. But these community groups comes after a tender is awarded

This guy might as well be wearing an MK shirt. He came so close to admitting it, the most corrupt and vile humans are MK members of parliament. Almost all have corruption cases against them

So am I correct in understanding that REC is by law supposed to get all contracts. And for everyone(other people who tender for work), they need to communicate with REC for approval?

Unfortunately you have called the wrong participants for the opposing panel, you should have called the Black contractors who have been affected by these construction mafias. They have no shame of taking from their own Black brothers just because they don’t want to follow the processes. They take bread away from the table from local labourers. A very unfortunate, lawlessness attitude.
